Are candied peel and mixed peel the same thing?

I won't say which side of the 'discussion' I'm on, but who knew a conversation about making a Christmas cake could result in near carnage in our house.

I think mixed peel is a mixture of the candied peel of several different fruits.

The same. Candied peel tends to be whole, while mixed peel (which has been candied) is chopped up small.

Isn't mixed peel mixed candied peel? So I think they're the same.

If you buy whole candied peel and chop it yourself you will have a far superior product than the bags of mixed peel you get from a supermarket, which is not as extravagantly sugar coated as the whole stuff.

In short: the same stuff, possibly differing quality.

In shorter: horrible anyway, skip it and increase the dried fruit.

Mixed peel is a mixture of different types of chopped candied peel. So yes they are basically the same thing but you can buy candied peel as whole pieces as well.

I'm with AlternativeTentacle. Argument aside, they're absolutely horrible no matter which one you use. They should be cast aside forever along with glacé cherries.

I had some amazing glacé cherries once, cannot remember where I got them they were like maraschino but glacé ....i ate those from the tub.

I believe candied peel is American and mixed peel is the Uk equivalent.
