If you were served this for dinner, would you be happy?

We have some friends coming for dinner who are a mix of meat eaters and veggies. I don't know them very well so thought I would do a bit of a picky dinner.

Greek flatbreads, hoummous, halloumi, tomato salad, grilled courgette, garlic chicken and tzatziki.

Does this sound a decent balance for the veggies? I keep umming and ahhing over it.

And I'm stuck for dessert ideas! So what would you fancy for pudding after eating that?

Basically it sounds deliciou

I wonder about adding a more substantial salad maybe something with lentils as well?

For dessert how about assorted baklava?

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2019 12:41

I'd be delighted if I was served that.

Doilooklikeatourist · 28/09/2019 12:41

Sounds lovely , my husband would want potatoes though 😀
Chocolate brownie with some raspberries and ice cream for dessert ?

And cheeses. You gotto have cheeses..
MMM, cheese, Gromit, cheeseGrin
All sounds lovely, OP. Don't have a sweet tooth, so can't help with pud, but...cheese...

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:43

I'd do a more substantial ottolenghi style salad as well.

Flower777 · 28/09/2019 12:45

Or you could add lentils to the courgettes.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 28/09/2019 12:47

I’d still be hungry unless there was some sort of pasta/rice/potato....etc

moreismore · 28/09/2019 12:48

YUM! I agree you need something else carb-y. I’d dice a butternut squash and roughly chop an onion and roast with olive oil, salt and pepper. Make a dressing with tahini (or nut butter), lemon juice, a little fresh garlic, salt and pepper and then enough water to make it consistency of runny honey. So good.

moreismore · 28/09/2019 12:49

Ps it’s an ottolenghi salad as suggested by pp Smile

Piglet208 · 28/09/2019 12:50

How about adding some mini cubed roasted potatoes cooked with garlic and thyme for those who need more carbs.

moreismore · 28/09/2019 12:50

Dessert maybe something fresh but a bit indulgent like lemon posset and berries

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/09/2019 12:50

Anything on the side- wedges, chips, a
Salad?

SallyWD · 28/09/2019 12:51

Sounds delicious (I'm vegetarian). If its not too much trouble you could Google a recipe for Briam to bulk things up a bit. It's like a Greek vegetable stew with potatoes, tomatoes etc. I always serve baklava for dessert if I have Greek food. I buy it from the supermarket or local market.

BlackCatSleeping · 28/09/2019 12:52

It feels more like a lunch to me. It’s basically a salad and sandwich.

foreverroses · 28/09/2019 12:53

Does everyone like garlic? Plain chicken as well please!

Cheeseboard, boring and 80s but solves many a problem when someone can’t eat or doesn’t like this and that, they can fill up on cheese and wine. Get vegetarian cheese also.

I’m
Not a big pudding person but cheesecake seems to be a winner.

AliasGrape · 28/09/2019 12:54

I’d love that, I agree that something else carby would be good. Maybe some giant beans to keep with Greek theme www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/12229/gigantes-plaki

NoHummus · 28/09/2019 12:54

I would love that. Can I come?!

foreverroses · 28/09/2019 12:54

Ooh yes you need a leaf salad on the side

MinnieAnonyMouse · 28/09/2019 12:54

I felt like it needed something else so thank you for the suggestions! I like the idea of briam and maybe some roast potatoes with lots of rosemary. The flatbreads are a bit like naan so quite substantial and I always cook loads.

I love the brownie idea and I have a fab recipe for them so that's a good plan!

Oblomov19 · 28/09/2019 12:55

Agree. Sounds delicious, but I Think you need something, added to make it more substantial.

tisonlymeagain · 28/09/2019 12:55

Sounds lovely, I have dinners like that all the time - maybe I'd add some roasted garlicky new potatoes, something simply but carby.

Dessert, I'd go with something lemony - maybe a pavlova or a cheesecake.

KatnissMellark · 28/09/2019 12:55

I'd add in some chunky potato wedges, homemade with lots of salt and pepper.

For dessert a lemon cheesecake with berries.

MinnieAnonyMouse · 28/09/2019 12:55

And I always cook tons so we could probably feed half of Mumsnet as well!

OP posts:
Livebythecoast · 28/09/2019 12:55

Maybe some couscous too?
Sounds very nice though.

KatnissMellark · 28/09/2019 12:56

And then maybe follow with coffee and chocolates, as that always feels indulgent / like you're being treated.
