If you were served this for dinner, would you be happy?

We have some friends coming for dinner who are a mix of meat eaters and veggies. I don't know them very well so thought I would do a bit of a picky dinner.

Greek flatbreads, hoummous, halloumi, tomato salad, grilled courgette, garlic chicken and tzatziki.

Does this sound a decent balance for the veggies? I keep umming and ahhing over it.

And I'm stuck for dessert ideas! So what would you fancy for pudding after eating that?

I don't have a massive appetite but I'd need something more filling, it doesn't sound like a full meal. Like maybe some lamb kebabs to go with the flatbread, but that would be very expensive.

Spicy wedges/chipped potatoes

Feta & olives

All a bit costly but that type of 'picky' food rather than a proper meal always is.

Maybe do a heavy pudding like sticky toffee pud. Or baklavas.

Can I come? Sounds yummy

AliasGrape · 28/09/2019 13:00

As for desert I’m not a huge fan of baklava personally, but you could maybe offer a mix of that and some other little pastries or similar, or fresh fruit and ice cream?

Or my sister in law served us an amazing Greek orange cake at the weekend, I don’t know the exact recipe she used but it was along these lines, she didn’t put the topping on, just served with creme fraiche. www.deliaonline.com/recipes/collections/easy-entertaining/greek-orange-and-honey-syrup-cake-with-yoghurt-and-pistachios

Roast lamb done Greek style
Some type of potatoes / wedges

It sounds a little light
Baklava isn’t to everyone’s taste too honeyed and sweet for me
A fruit tart maybe ??

Does sound lovely tho , my type of food

Have a lovely eve

Chocolatecake12 · 28/09/2019 13:02

Lemon tart for dessert with extra thick double cream - yum!
I love your menu but as a pp suggested a bowl of mini diced roasted potatoes would be a great addition.

PandaTurtle · 28/09/2019 13:06

I think it sounds lovely and would be very impressed.

I'm allergic/intolerant to garlic though think that's quite rare but would prefer plain chicken / lamb. Would love potatoes again with no garlic.

If you've got fussy eaters coming plain and less mixing options work best so grilled courgettes is better than grilled courgettes with lentils.

I love stuffed vine leaves but sounds like you have a lot already and hopefully you won't get fussy eaters.

BlueEyedBengal · 28/09/2019 13:06

Sounds delicious to me I'd be very happy if served this but maybe potatoes in some form or another and some nice cheese then very perfect I'd saySmile

MinnieAnonyMouse · 28/09/2019 13:08

Everyone eats (loads of) garlic so that's one thing I'm not worried about! Right, better get cracking on the flatbreads. Thanks all!

How about tiropita - feta filo pastry pie? It's delicious, easy and quick to make and adds some more carbs to the menu. Or spanokopita, with spinach. If you want to be fancy you can make individual ones in triangles or a big spiral.

Roast potatoes with garlic, lemon and oregano would work well too or just oregano.

ChikiTIKI · 28/09/2019 13:20

Phwoar that sounds lovely. Make sure you come back and tell us how it turns out 😊 I am in a cooking mood due to the bad weather. I have just roasted some cherry tomatoes and onions to make a soup for tomorrow. Making a Spanish tortilla later for lunch tomorrow too 😊

Derbee · 28/09/2019 13:21

I’d add a carb type accompaniment to pull everything together. Probably couscous

SmudgeButt · 28/09/2019 13:25

I like doing a big roasting tray of halved small potatoes (skin on) and wedged onions and then add tomatoes, mushrooms, courgette, peppers as you like. Dump all into large roasting tray, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle on mixed herbs, get your hands in to mix about and roast maybe half an hour.

Bonus is that your hands get really greasy from the oil which is lovely for the skin. Rinse your hands under warm to hot water while massaging the oil in further and then pat dry. Soft soft hands!

caringcarer · 28/09/2019 13:29

I would serve some jacket wedges too, to add a few carbs if anyone really hungry. Chocolate mouse with fresh raspberries and scoop of vanilla ice cream. I would offer a cheeseboard and crackers too.

Chewbecca · 28/09/2019 13:30

Yum

I follow this Delia recipe for little crunchy potatoes. It’s the drying off of the cut sides that makes them extra crunchy. I’d add these.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 28/09/2019 13:30

Sounds lovely. What about that delicious Greek rice as well? I have no idea how to make it but it's my favourite thing and caters for veggie/non-veggie alike (I think).

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 28/09/2019 13:31

What time do you want me? 😛

Tonnerre · 28/09/2019 13:32

Have you checked no-one has a sesame allergy?

SpeckledyHen · 28/09/2019 13:32

I would add some good quality olives and a cous cous salad . Something lemony for pud . Coffee and Bendicks Bittermints.

lastqueenofscotland · 28/09/2019 13:33

Sounds lovely but yes to maybe cous cous or falafel?

notacooldad · 28/09/2019 13:34

I'm a veggie and I serve similar to that.( without the chicken)

Some of the things I also serve with it are baba ganush, lentil tabbouleh, tahini dip, slow roastedpeppers onion and garlic, roasted cauliflower and tahinii and my favourite, lebneh, if I've had enough time to make it. ( I don't serve them all on the same night! I mix it up dependingwhose coming and what their favourites are)

Sometimes I'll roast dome spiced potatoe wedges. They always go down well
For deserts, Komafah with lemon syrup Is great and then Baklava with coffee

lottiegarbanzo · 28/09/2019 13:34

As a veggie I'd like lentil salad (goes well with halloumi) or another hot vegetable dish. Otherwise it's a bit thin, salady and lunchy.

Potatoes are nice but you have breads already. More carbs aren't what's needed by the veggies.

raspberryk · 28/09/2019 13:36

I would add falafel and similar, feta and olives, stuffed vine leaves, paste/rice/bulgar wheat or cous cous salad or potato salad, artichoke.
I would probably want a hot stodgy pudding like rice pudding, pie, crumble, fudge cake and a cheese course tbh as it does sound a bit like the starter, if that all came out at my parents for example I would be saving myself waiting for the mains ... which if they didn't come out I would be hungry.

EmrysAtticus · 28/09/2019 13:38

It sounds delish!!!

CheeseChipsMayo · 28/09/2019 13:41

Thats a great dinner! Maybe a lemon&raspberry roulade&a choc torte/ice cream..or cheesecake..easy crowd pleasers.Have a great night😊

AnnaMagnani · 28/09/2019 13:44

Second the idea of briam - v little effort to make, sounds like it won't be that nice but tastes amazing. Fills the carb gap in your line up.
