If you were served this for dinner, would you be happy?

We have some friends coming for dinner who are a mix of meat eaters and veggies. I don't know them very well so thought I would do a bit of a picky dinner.

Greek flatbreads, hoummous, halloumi, tomato salad, grilled courgette, garlic chicken and tzatziki.

Does this sound a decent balance for the veggies? I keep umming and ahhing over it.

And I'm stuck for dessert ideas! So what would you fancy for pudding after eating that?

I love lucky good like that. As others have said some potatoes or wedges something like that would be good.

Crinkle77 · 28/09/2019 13:51

Although autocorrect. Should have said picky bits.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 28/09/2019 13:53

And I always cook tons so we could probably feed half of Mumsnet as well!

Is that an invite? patiently waits for OP to PM her address. 🤞 😁

Sounds lovely. I’d want pickles too though! I’d also probably throw in some tabbouleh. And some feta... any tomatoes? When do you want me around?

BenWillbondsPants · 28/09/2019 13:55

Orzo salad with chickpeas, red and yellow tomatoes, olives, feta, parsley and diced red onions with a lemon dressing over the top. Lovely.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 13:57

Do you know what’s really nice - roast cauliflower.

I cut it into slices, drizzle some olive oil and a squeeze of lemon, some red chilli flakes and roast it. I can’t describe the taste - not ‘caluiflower-ey - but really lovely.

nononever · 28/09/2019 14:05

As a vegetarian I would love it.

starfishmummy · 28/09/2019 14:05

We often have similar (with lamb not chicken). As long as there are plenty of flatbreads per person then it sounds fine to me

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 14:06

As a vegetarian - is scoff all the haloumi.

NewStart571 · 28/09/2019 14:18

What time do you want us to come round??

The food sounds so lovely! Definitely a winning menu.

Bouledeneige · 28/09/2019 14:21

I agree with people suggesting adding something a bit more substantial. It sounds like lunch or starters.

For pudding i might serve one of those lebanese/morroccan orange and almond cakes with creme fraiche and fruit.

MikeUniformMike · 28/09/2019 14:29

Not RTFT.

If you are providing picky food for vegetarians and non-vegetarians bear in mind that the non-vegetarians will eat vegetarian food.

Probably not an issue for you, but if it it was a barbecue or something, you'd need more vege food than you think.

IME, vege food isn't as filling as meat.

Ohyesiam · 28/09/2019 14:39

All the people saying more carby bulk is needed, are you young?

I’m in my fifties and really love food, but what I want is max taste, min bulk, (especially if there’s brownies)or I quickly get full and stop enjoying it.

Until I was peri menopausal I could happily stuff in the carbs and enjoy it, but now my taste buds turn off when I get anywhere near full, and it all tastes dull.

Ohyesiam · 28/09/2019 14:40

Ps, I meant to say that menu sound delicious and I’d be very happy if I was served it.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 28/09/2019 14:44

I think it sounds lovely and I wouldn't want more carbs personally. If you feel that you do, I'd just nip to the shops for a couple of packs of falafels, but then I'm all about wiring into the wine keeping things easy when I entertain.

BertrandRussell · 28/09/2019 14:46

I would do brownies and a bowl of fruit for pudding. If you want to add another salad, google Jack Monroe Cannellini beurre blanc. We’ve become addicted to it-so easy and delicious. Double the garlic.

I love roast cauliflower and I suggested it earlier with a tahini dip. Have you tried that? Dead easy but really good!

QueSera · 28/09/2019 15:12

Maybe add something like falafels?
And maybe something filling, like couscous, potatoes or rice? Maybe Greek potatoes?
For dessert, I like PP suggestions of baklava or brownie.
Sounds lovely though OP!

WellButterMyArse · 28/09/2019 15:16

Sounds delicious. I love carbs and the flatbread would be fine for me, but a bit of couscous never goes amiss. Definitely agree something lemony for dessert would work.

IncrediblySadToo · 28/09/2019 15:19

Sounds lovely to me and already plenty of carbs!! (Flatbread hommous etc). I’m veg

Dessert - anything 🤣.

I’m eating keto so any dessert sounds amazing!!

Serin · 28/09/2019 15:20

I agree with others it needs a heavier salad or some sort of veggie stew. 2 of the veggie dishes are just dips really.
Big bowl of Greek roast potatoes would be good too.

Destinesia · 28/09/2019 15:23

Veggie moussaka?

Boysey45 · 28/09/2019 15:33

Sounds nice, I'd do some falafel as well for the veggies. Halloumi is quite expensive for a small block and you might get some greedy person taking loads, so I'd fill it out with falafel.
Definitely some carbs with this as well.
I wouldn't do a brownie for pudding, I think its poor and they are tasteless as well. I'd do baclava, M and S sell it and its nice if you cant be bothered making your own.Lidl sell it as well.

WellButterMyArse · 28/09/2019 15:43

I mean, I could certainly manage to worry down a bit of a heavier salad or roasted cauli...

BattleofBosworth · 28/09/2019 16:34

I’d be thrilled. When do you want me?
