They are the most gorgeous dogs and I would have one(well a pack of them) in another life...living in Alaska maybe.
Loving all these stories about pps Huskies Smile

Ahh Windy your 2 pointy hounds look like they're going to do the 'Chasing Rabbits In My Sleep Kick' in unison and your husky will slide off the leather sofa onto the floor (so the Pointies can lay claim to the entire sofa) Grin

Love all the photos on this thread. I think husky and husky type dogs are just amazing but I don't think anyone other than very very devoted owners with plenty of time and energy should get them.

One of my pointy hounds was a poacher's ddog and lived outside!! Proper couch potato now!

I know a family who state their husky is happy with a 20 min walk a day.they have no garden.
Sadly husky can't talk.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/09/2019 17:45

They are marvellous dogs in the right hands but a total nightmare in the wrong ones. I've seen them both on a lead, half-mad from frustration, lunging at other dogs and snapping and barking, and at the other extreme, happily staked out on a line in the snow waiting for a chance to be put into harness and worked. They were bred to run and run and run. Our local FB page regularly has escaped huskies on it...

I am not a dog person but a few years ago we camped at a farm in the Highlands that kept huskies - they had a huge barn full of them and I remember lying awake in my tent at night listening to them howling. It was very atmospheric!

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/09/2019 19:42

Oh dear lord, I should not have opened this page... I am puppy-broody, live in a big house in the country, run 5 miles a day...no, no, I don't want a husky....

Please, everyone, tell me I don't want a husky!

Windydaysuponus · 30/09/2019 19:54

You don't want a Husky unless you love food with added whiteness. Clothes with even more added whiteness. Face with added slober.

LittleGinBigGin · 30/09/2019 20:21

@Soola

That was my big dog!! You’d end up with a new dog by the time you’d finished brushing him Grin miss that pup

Zaphod if you're thinking about a dog, what about a husky?

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/10/2019 19:57

Now, just you stop that right now 70.

umberellaonesie · 01/10/2019 20:12

We lost our Siberian husky in February and I miss him very much.
But I would never get another one.
For the first 2 years I wanted to get rid of him every day. We are dog people had puppies before but a husky puppy was a whole new experience. He did not pass one puppy class.
Once he was passed that stage he was a joy affectionate, very well trained but no recall and extremely loyal. But could not be left alone and needed run everyday. We also have a Jack Russel who kept him company and in line, we call him the general. The hair god I don't miss the hair!!!!
So great dogs but definitely a lifestyle choice and need experienced owners with time to excersize them and just be with them.

Defenbaker · 01/10/2019 21:20

Zaphod, if only you could dognap the poor husky living near us, I'm sure it would have a great life with you.
If you want to see a well cared for husky with a beautiful temperament and a dedicated owner, go check out Gohan The Husky on Youtube. Great channel, lots of good information and relaxing vids. Makes me want one, but my allergies would make it impossible.

Lardlizard · 02/10/2019 22:01

Oh I need to check that out on YouTube

I have a friend who’s bitch had a litter of Siberian huskies. OMFG too cute. I walked in fancying a puppy cuddle and pretty much had to be frisked on the way out to make sure I hadn’t stolen the boy. Blush

fanniboz · 02/10/2019 22:33

They're gorgeous but wouldn't ever have one. They're really hard work; very strong and stubborn. I'm exhausted with just a Labrador so wouldn't be fair on the husky to get one Grin

I grew up with one and my parents have one now who they got while I was still living at home.

My mother walks/hikes their current one for around at least 1/1.5 hours and my dad walks her another 30 minutes/hour or so. Everyday, even though she’s 11 now.

We live in Canada and she is much, much happier in cooler weather. She loves when it’s below freezing, you have to drag her inside at night even when it dips below -25C. She is a lovely dog. She does walk well on a leash, doesn’t pull, is good with other dogs/cats and doesn’t bark/howl.

The one I had as a kid pulled like a train on lead, was very prey driven, dug holes all over the garden, had no recall whatsoever, and howled like a banshee. This was with the same amount or more exercise compared to the current one. She was happiest running flat out alongside the snowmobile in the winter.

I love the breed but will never have one myself. I could never dedicate the time to one that they need.
