Everyone who's seen GOT seems to think they want a husky. They're not the type of dog you buy on a whim, they are a commitment,

I think they're a dog who needs a certain kind of life and home and a three bedroom house in the suburbs with a patch of garden is not it. I know four, all different owners and they are all a law unto themselves. They stay close to their owners but have no recall once they have spotted something they're interested in. The ones I know are not aggressive but are aloof and just do what they want basically and I think other dogs find them quite scary. I adore them but I'd never have one. If you're an experienced dog owner and you like big shaggy wolfy looking dogs you could do a lot worse than the Berger Blanc Suisse - Swiss Shepherds. Gorgeous dogs and need a lot of exercise but not as tricky as huskies.

adaline · 28/09/2019 08:12

My sister in law has one and she is a lot of work (the husky, not the SIL!)

Absolutely no recall whatsoever - she will come near you but won't let you catch her without a fight.

Very rough play but that's normal with the breed - she plays with my dog and they rough house a lot. Nothing wrong with it but it can look a bit violent to passers by!

She's very vocal and howls a lot.

Needs a lot of exercise - she gets two good runs a day of several miles each. Without that, she will get destructive.

Saying that, she is a lovely dog and extremely friendly, but she's a lot of work and it's absolutely not a lifestyle I would want to commit to!

We have one and he's a little arse. We do have another dog though. They're both 8 now, we got them together as a bonded pair from Dog's Trust. He is lovely to be fair, but also very stubborn and very vocal!

Stay which one is the arse ? The dark one ?

The white one. He's the full Husky. The black one is part Husky mixed with Akita and Rottweiler, she looks vicious but she's absolutely soft as muck and if you let her, should would just sit licking you the entire day. The Husky though only wants a stroke and tummy rub when he decides, and hates being cuddled, he's very aloof! They're like chalk and cheese

Windydaysuponus · 28/09/2019 14:13

Omg my husky is so affectionate - all the time.
She loves everyone, even our dcats who don't appreciate her kisses!
One of ds's first phrases was - no like your kisses - to her!
We have been very lucky I am well aware!

Stressedout10 · 28/09/2019 15:07

Got 2 both pre loved
They get walked 12km a day and have atleast 1hour pulling ds on his sledge (more like a cart as has wheels) .
I've spent years training them and am now ready to get another 2 or 4 .
But they are loud and stubborn basically like teenagers but we love them

NarwhalsNarwhals · 28/09/2019 15:14

I have a husky cross. He is beautiful and I love him but truthfully when he dies I will not get another. I've had big dogs all my life but huskies are definitely the hardest breed I have ever had.He is a rescue which probably makes things worse.

He has 0 recall, pulls on the lead and never shuts up. He chases everything and I can't let him off the lead. I made the mistake of putting a harness on him once rather than a normal lead, he broke my wrist trying to chase a squirrel.

BossAssBitch · 28/09/2019 16:09

Huskies are beautiful but are sadly the new staffies; they have become the status dog of the chav, I come across loads when I’m walking my dogs and they often lunge at mine aggressively. People buy them without realising what high maintenance they are Hmm

Windydaysuponus · 28/09/2019 16:17

We spent 2 years researching, dh had always wanted one. I was less sure as I like to have a ddog off lead.
She walks to heel on lead and pulls great on harness +scooter. Teen dc can manage her out alone. But she loves being out full stop. Doesn't like getting her feet wet in the sea but sits out in snow whenever she gets the chance! Prob not get another as had her from a puppy and puppy days are def over! I imagine a rescue one would be much more demanding. We have been to a few husky working places. Pesky husky which sadly closed, and a man who takes his sled dogs abroad racing. Ddogs much more 'wild' and outdoorsy than ours. Chance on a bed she is there to stay!

ChilliMayo · 28/09/2019 16:20

They have one about 5/6 houses down. He's an escape artist. I often hear neighbours down at that end shrieking all sorts when he has escaped (over the 6ft fences) into their gardens, he's even been found in neighbours kitchens. The house is like a military compound.
His owner looks happy enough when I see them out walking though. He gives me such a happy grimace as he is pulled past.

Windydaysuponus · 28/09/2019 16:38

Does this ddog look in any hurry to escape??

Lardlizard · 28/09/2019 17:12

"I think they're a dog who needs a certain kind of life and home and a three bedroom house in the suburbs with a patch of garden is not it."

I had a husky x podenco for 16 years, and while he was the perfect dog for me (great recall strangely enough, incredibly easy to please, and really affectionate) I'd say this in spades. I lived on a large farm, with endless space and an outside lifestyle, and he loved to run and run, obviously fine when you have loads of large fields. He was bombproof with stock too, and a great deterrent to foxes etc. LOTS of fur (really, really lots) and seriously vocal though!

Yes, you can go on husky sledge rides by prebooking at Eagle Heights which is in Eynsford, near Sevenoaks, Kent.
Why, you can even spend the night in a tent surrounded by the huskies if you want.
If you visit, you can see all their huskies (they compete).

ChilliMayo · 28/09/2019 18:25

The eagle displays are quite good too, hence the Eagle Heights!

Defenbaker · 28/09/2019 18:59

I wish the neighbour near us would rehome his husky. The dog is beautiful but the owner is a lazy moron with no clue of how to care for the poor dog, who is barely walked, untrained and often left alone for hours. The owner works full time and the dog is often heard howling and whimpering during the long spells it is shut out in their tiny garden. It gives me the rage just thinking about it. I am convinced it will attack somebody one day, out of boredom and frustrstion. Such beautiful dogs, but so many of them end up with people who are incapable of caring for them properly.

SconeofDestiny · 28/09/2019 19:16

Gorgeous dogs, lovely nature but maybe need lots of attention?
We looked after a young female husky for a neighbour so that she could get a week's break from everything.
She was a fairly newly single, parent and struggling to juggle everything. I loved the dog who was very sweet natured and great with our male dog but DH ended up sleeping on the second sofa with her for the whole week because she couldn't cope with being left alone without human company for a minute, even though she was fine with our dog. She would howl and scratch and cause lots of damage so it was a very loooong week. Sadly, neighbour had to re-home her because she worked p/t and the dog was very vocal when she was out and her landlord insisted that either the dog goes or she'd have to.Sad
I was keen to take her but DH felt it would be too difficult to retrain her.
Apparently, she was adopted fairly quickly by someone who had an outdoor lifestyle and several other dogs and she has settled in well. (I know a lady who works at the local rescue.)

Yeps 🙋‍♀️

I had a male and female my male was poorly and put to sleep a few months ago!

Absolutely stunning dogs - amazing temperament, fantastic with the kids, but bloody hard work. Crap recall, my big dog took down a deer after he slipped his lead, he’s also had rabbits, birds, scaled 8ft walls, needed constant entertainment, was fantastic at agility, we used to run him ever weekend for miles and miles on a rig, but he was the most loving fluffy boy you could ever meet, not a bad bone in his body.

My girl is amazing she was a bit lost for a few months after her pal died but she’s getting better. Not enough for me ever to get another 🤣 admittedly her recall is better than big dogs was and she’s amazing with the kids, so loving I think she’s the most un husky like husky ever. Is best friend with the cat, hates snow, doesn’t like the rain 🤷‍♀️ She’s not even up for long walks/runs anymore.

LittleGinBigGin · 28/09/2019 19:35

Big dog, little dog and the cat which big dog found in a box with all his dead kitten siblings so we rescued him

Our boy Husky is like that! He got his foot wet off the hosepipe in the summer and actually yelped like he'd been stung. He was also out having a wee the other night when it was raining then the second he was done he sprinted across the garden to get back in where it was dry so fast, he skidded across the kitchen floor. He loves nothing better than lying in bed and if you dare move, he'll be in your spot then pretend he can't hear when you tell him to move
