Has anyone had measles as a child or their baby had measles? If so how did you or your baby cope?

I had it as a child in the early 80s. Most people did. My cohort predated the MMR and I had all three diseases. I don't remember measles being particularly bad but I'm aware of people in my generation experiencing complications from it, some of them severe.

Never had measles and neither have my children who all had the MMR jab

I had chickenpox at the grand old age of 37 after ds1 got it for the 2nd bloody time Grin

I had measles as a child. Dsis was a tiny baby at the time so I was sent to hospital by myself to protect her. Have no recollection of any of it thankfully.
I do remember having mumps and being shipped off to my Granny's again to prevent small siblings catching it. I was completely and totally miserable

I was born in the early 70s and only know one person who had it when I was a child. Most people had the single vaccines for whooping cough and measles at that time (rubella was given later to 12 year old girls). Lots of people had mumps. My parents both had measles as children and both can still remember it being awful and having to lie in a darkened room for 2 weeks. A paediatric nurse friend of mine was talking recently about the increase in measles cases they are getting and what a horrible disease it is. She had known two children die of it within the last year.

Invisimamma · 27/09/2019 10:33

My ds had measles when he was ten months old (before he was old enough for mmr). Luckily he recovered well, he's now nearly 9yrs old with no known side effects.

WalksWithDinosaurs · 27/09/2019 10:34

I had the measles before I had my vaccination, I was 5, and while I felt a bit crap, I think that my most annoying thing was I wasn't allowed to watch tv, and had to wear sunglasses for a few weeks after -

I then had the MMR (once recovered), then the 16 plus booster - when I was 17 I had German measles collage wide outbreak- (which sucked I had to miss a dive trip to Egypt!!), then in my second year of uni I had the mumps- again, felt kind of rotten both times, the mumps made me feel like my teeth were falling out!!

but I will say- I'm a Type ! insulin Dependant Diabetic, since 2000-

considering that your bog standard stomach virus lands me in the hospital in a worse state - the fact that neither Rubella or the Mumps did, although I felt rotten, weren't too bad- seriously I've had worse cases of food poisoning!

honestly with modern medication it was dealt with - the mumps lead to a secondary chest infection which I needed antibiotics for- I know they are bad, and my diabetes did react a bit, but not to the extent that I needed to go to hospital thankfully - so i'd say that although unpleasant- they weren't dangerous!!

I had measles in the 80s and was very unwell with it. All of my children have been vaccinated for this reason.

MashedSpud · 27/09/2019 10:36

I was born in the early 70’s too. I don’t recall anyone having the measles. I remember there being croup though.

Lagatha · 27/09/2019 10:39

I used to work with a lady whose daughter had measles in the late 70's so the daughter was a similar age to me. She had seizures at the time and it damaged her eyesight

Wolfiefan · 27/09/2019 10:41

I had measles. My mum was told by GP not to vaccinate me due to medical concerns. I was very ill.

Dillydallyingthrough · 27/09/2019 10:41

I had th measles in the early 80's no long lasting side effects but I was sent to my grans as i had my DM was pregnant.

underneaththeash · 27/09/2019 10:41

DS1 had it at about 20 months. He’d had one dose of MMR (but clearly hadn’t given him enough immunity).
He was really poorly for about a week, high temperature, spotty, bad ear ache, sore throat.

Eyes were the worst though and he ended up with an ulcer (which was treated rapidly as i’m An optometrist and knew what it was). However, he ended up being very long-sighted in that eye which could have been a result of the measles. This has lead to a few problems.

GU24Mum · 27/09/2019 10:44

I had it when I was about 4. I can't remember much other than feeling very hot/having a rash and being bought a book to help with the recovery.

Dockray · 27/09/2019 10:45

I had measles as a child. I was very, very ill. Hallucinating and the unconscious. I've been left with a tremor in my arm which gets worse when I'm tired.

I also know of several children for whom measles had life changing consequences (my brother has a complex genetic illness and we spent a lot of time on the neuro ward). The damage measles did to their brain was immense.

Measles scares me as I've seen what can happen.

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/09/2019 10:47

Uncle had measles as a child. He ended up deaf from it.

Dowser · 27/09/2019 10:48

I did. My grandsons had it a few years ago.

Apileofballyhoo · 27/09/2019 10:49

I had measles as a small child of 3 or 4. I was very sick with a very high temperature and I couldn't keep paracetamol down. It was back in the day when doctors would come to your house (Ireland 1970s/early 80s) and our GP came everyday or sometimes twice and I think I was close to being hospitalized but turned a corner just before. I apparently had hallucinations but I don't remember. I do remember the vomiting vaguely. I remember the getting better part a bit better.

I also had mumps, I think that was a couple of years later and I think it was very painful but didn't last very long.

If we ever talk about the measles my DM says things like 'We were so worried' and 'I didn't like the look on Dr's face'.

chemenger · 27/09/2019 10:50

I had it as a child in the 60’s and remember it being very unpleasant, off school for a week. Lying in a darkened room and unbearable itching is what I remember. I then had it mildly twice more because for some reason I didn’t develop proper immunity. Mumps was much worse. I have a colleague who is deaf in one ear due to measles as a child.

chemenger · 27/09/2019 10:51

I also remember multiple visits by the doctor during measles and mumps so I suspect I was quite unwell.

katycb · 27/09/2019 10:51

Husband had measles as a baby in the 80s and got it whilst too young for jab. Was hospitalised and really I'll. Close friends baby had it after first dose of mmr so had immunity but not 100% he has a hearing loss due to it. People should vaccinate the threat is real!

stickerqueen · 27/09/2019 10:51

i had measles has a child I don't remember it though was to young.
I had mumps and was really ill with that.

Alwayswithalacrity · 27/09/2019 10:54

Caught it In early 1960’s. Eyesight problem attributed to it.

NellyMatrass · 27/09/2019 10:57

Thanks everyone, not an anti vax but my 4 year old never had his MMR yet and because he had febrile seizures which he had ongoing problems after in the past, im scared to vaccinate him. I was going to wait until he is 5 and get the MMR but because he goes to nursery im still debating wether to get it done or not as im scared of the vaccine and if he gets measles as measles are back in the UK. Also known lots of ppl posting their babies had measles even tho they had MMR sometimes even both doses. So not sure what to do as i think even if there would be an outbreak of measles in his nursery he could possibly still get it after having MMR.. im just very confused and scared of them both..

I had measles in the early 80’s and I wasn’t too bad. My sister had it and was very, very unwell.
My cousin lost 70% vision because of it.
If you’re considering not vaccinating because you’ve heard it’s a “mild” childhood illness....don’t be stupid!

Cockw0mble · 27/09/2019 10:58

I'm currently in the middle of a podcast episode on measles (this podcast will kill you) - scary stuff! Essentially measles has the ability to make your immune system forget previous immunity - so any previous infections you've had and fought (or I assume been vaccinated against). This means after dealing with measles itself, your at risk of all sorts of other nasties until your immune system fights them and builds immunity again
