Has anyone had measles as a child or their baby had measles? If so how did you or your baby cope?

OP posts:

Cross posted. You can have him vaccinated in hospital so they can monitor his reactions.

Kernowgal · 27/09/2019 10:59

I remember it going round at school but I didn't have it; I did get rubella though (vaccination not standard when I were a lass). Had whooping cough despite being vaccinated and I can still remember how horrible it was - though much less horrible than it would have been without the vaccination. My brother had mumps before he was due to be vaccinated and was very ill.

I don't have kids, but if I did, I would unreservedly have them vaccinated, MMR and all.

Benes · 27/09/2019 11:01

Get him vaccinated in hospital so they can monitor him. It's important that he has them

Very lucky that I never got measles and my mum was not sure I had been vaccinated so as a teenager I got myself vaccinated.

My BiL had either measles or CP as a child and ended up with significant loss of sight and hearing. My mum ended up with rubella when pregnant with my sister and she is legally blind with plenty of other issues.

lemonjam · 27/09/2019 11:03

My brother had it as a baby and was very ill for a week but recovered fine.
What really really terrifies me about measles is the very very rare brain complication that can pop up years later and kill you - I would never stop being stressed about it. A wee boy in my area died of it this year.

Venger · 27/09/2019 11:05

honestly with modern medication it was dealt with

There is no treatment for measles.

They can treat the symptoms for example fever and discomfort with calpol or ibuprofen, sensitivity to light with dimmed lights and sunglasses, and so on but there is no actual treatment for the measles itself and your body has to fight it off which is great if your body does that but not so great if it doesn't.

Winesalot · 27/09/2019 11:08

Sorry. My sister is legally blind not mum.

OP that must be so, so worrying. Hopefully you will find a way through.

BadTigerKitty · 27/09/2019 11:08

My mother talks about when I had rubella as a toddler. I was as very, very ill and it was an awful time for her. Luckily I had no long term side effects.

tabulahrasa · 27/09/2019 11:11

I had it when I was about 5... so hard to judge exactly how unwell I felt, but I do remember being pretty miserable, sore eyes, sore throat - fever.

A bit like proper full blown flu, but with extra symptoms.

I know I definitely felt worse with measles than with mumps or chicken pox, I’ve also had whooping cough, but I was a toddler and don’t remember it... I was unvaccinated until I was old enough to give permission myself.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 27/09/2019 11:13

I had it as a baby.

I was hospitalised.

OP have you spoken to your gp or vaccination nurse about your worries?

calmpuppycrazykids · 27/09/2019 11:19

I remember my brother having measles as a baby
He was in hospital and they had blankets up on the windows to keep it dark
He became deaf due to measles

eurochick · 27/09/2019 11:20

Speak to your GP about your concerns. I'm sure they can be managed.

It's fantastic that these vaccinations are available now, so that today's children won't have to suffer through these illnesses as I and many of the other posters on here did.

ColaFreezePop · 27/09/2019 11:20

OP please go to your practice asap to have a conversation with a practice nurse. Sometimes GPs practices will refuse to vaccinate children so it has to be done at a hospital so the child can be monitored. My DSD is one such child.

tootiredforyourshit · 27/09/2019 11:23

Not personally had it but friend of my mum has severe brain damage directly due to whooping cough . I’ve also cared for an adult who had congenital rubella caused by her mother getting rubella, she was deafblind and immobile . Her mother still into her 80s gave her full time care . It really, really is not worth the risk .

Saucery · 27/09/2019 11:28

I was fine. Rubella, less so, it affected my eyesight and hearing.
Please don’t look for positive stories of breezing through these illnesses though. I know your dc being susceptible to febrile convulsions is extremely worrying but they could also have those with any of the diseases there is a vaccination for. Health professionals will take that seriously and advise accordingly (they did for my ds for allergy concerns).

Lagatha · 27/09/2019 11:34

Surely if he is prone to febrile convulsions it's better to be vaccinated? Are you concerned he will develop a post immunisation fever? The fever you get from actual measles is likely to be a higher temperature and go on for far longer than the one caused by a jab.
I would really urge you to talk to your gp about your concerns rather than posting here. Your doctor will know the full facts.
Please go and see them.

Aknifewith16blades · 27/09/2019 11:40

I would talk to your GP.

Roald Dahl's description of seeing his daughter die from measles has been seared on my brain ever since I first read it. Heart-breakingly, they obtained an early form of the vaccine for her disabled brother, but not for her.

It's in the last part of this article: www.telegraph.co.uk/books/authors/roald-dahls-darkest-hour/ The details about her going from learning to play chess, to being unable to make pipe-cleaner models, to lying dead in hospital all within the space of a day...

Carpathian2 · 27/09/2019 11:52

I had rubella as a toddler in the early 1960's and ended up in hospital because I was so ill
I had to wear sunglasses too and the delirium I had I can still remember now, even though it's over 50 years ago.

My sister had whooping cough at the same time and was in hospital too, I can still remember the sound of the whooping. We hadn't been vaccinated because we were a service family who moved about a lot ( my mum's excuse).

I vaccinated my dc at the first opportunity with anything available at the time. These childhood illnesses can and do kill and I dread a return to the past.

Why wouldn't you vaccinate?

Thatsnotmymammoth · 27/09/2019 11:57

I had it when i was 9 (I’m 59 so no vaccine then). I remember having weird eye pain for about 10 days and then gettIng properly Ill. I was in bed for about 10 days with a very high temperature, headache, cough and remember my DM not letting me look in a mirror. I persuaded my Grandad to bring me the bathroom mirror and then bursting into floods of tears when I saw I was covered in a bad rash. My hearing went very strange at some point and I have had mild hearing loss ever since. I have a very poor memory when it comes to my childhood but measles and tonsillitis and how very ill I felt with both I can still remember.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/09/2019 12:04

I had measles as a child in the 60s, and was very poorly with it though fortunately made a full recovery. I was also pretty ill with whooping cough, and mumps caused the most awful earache.

Please go and get advice from your GP. Unfortunately because of antivaxxers, children like yours aren't sufficiently protected by herd immunity nowadays.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 27/09/2019 12:10

I remember feeling bloody awful with mumps as a child.

Please go and speak to your GP about it all @NellyMatrass

NellyMatrass · 27/09/2019 12:12

Dont get me wrong, its not that i dont want to vaccinate him im just scared of the side effects of it but im also terrified of the diseases. Its both ways... hes otherwise vaccinated he just didint have the mmr yet. And his febrile seizures happened 6 days after his 13 months vacs

OP posts:
MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 27/09/2019 12:18

I had measles and it was dire,I was properly ill and off school for 6 weeks as was my sister. I was 12 iirc.

I had mumps when I was 7 and I still remember how ill I felt and I'm nearly 50 now!

I remember how hard it was trying to catch up at school after having half a term off.

My step father's eye sight was affected by measles as a child.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 27/09/2019 12:19

I remember whooping cough too,the noise of the cough😱

MsPavlichenko · 27/09/2019 12:21

Have the medics confirmed the convulsions convulsions were linked to the vaccinations? Are they suggesting not to have MMR? If not then go ahead.

Measles kills That's why parents queue for hours/ days in the Third world to have their DC vaccinated.
