Has anyone had measles as a child or their baby had measles? If so how did you or your baby cope?

I did because I was born before vaccinations were available. I can't remember much from being a child but I do remember feeling very, very ill. My siblings had it too. One of them wa left with eye damage. I wouldn't wish measles on anyone everyone who can should vaccinate their children

IceBearRocks · 27/09/2019 12:23

I had measles in the 80's ...... it really affected my eyesight and I am extremely short sighted. -7.5 in each eye!

NellyMatrass · 27/09/2019 12:23

No, they said they are not sure why it happened but he had 3 in less than 24 hours and was confused for over 6 months after.

I did, wasn't too bad. My little son also had measles but he'd had the MMR so it was mild.

Goingbacktokansascity · 27/09/2019 12:26

Mum had measles when she was younger and was completely fine, uncle who was infected at the same time was “a bit poorly” but is now sadly infertile from it

Oldbutstillgotit · 27/09/2019 12:27

My twin brother and I had measles in 1960 . Sadly , he died .

Bouledeneige · 27/09/2019 12:30

I had measles as a child and we knew a girl who got very ill with measles and lost her sight (and I think had pneumonia but that might have been someone else).

perpetuallyperplexedbylife · 27/09/2019 12:31

I was born in the 60s and had the single measles vaccination. I never had measles, but a friend did and was very ill with it. I had rubella when I was about 8 - don't remember being very ill with it, just upset I couldn't go to a birthday party as my mum told me that it could be dangerous if there were any pregnant women there.

Saucery · 27/09/2019 12:32

Talk to your GP or Health Visitor about it. They will take the convulsions seriously but these diseases also need taking very seriously, whether someone was absolutely fine in the 1970s with it or not.

Drabarni · 27/09/2019 12:33

I had all 3, grew up in the 70's.
I was fine but rubella affected my dsis eyes at the time.
They got better though, nothing lasting.

Whooping cough was pretty prevalent and a pain if you were asthmatic like me.
I don't know anyone who died from any of these diseases, or had serious issues, but I know people did.

LittleSweet · 27/09/2019 12:34

I had measles. I couldn't have the injection as I had a fit when I was a baby. It was in the early 80s. I can remember feeling ill, being cross because I couldn't watch TV, the curtains being shut and my neighbour's dd reading to me. I don't think my mum let me read because she was worried that I would damage my eyes.

LBOCS2 · 27/09/2019 12:36

My dad had measles in the 60s and it affected his sight.

I was hospitalised with measles at 4mo in the 80s. I also have crap eyesight (-6.5 in both eyes) but because I was so young we don't know whether it was the measles that caused it.

Like PPs said - get the immunisations done at hospital so you're in the right place. But it's really really important.

moreismore · 27/09/2019 12:39

I would recommend getting in touch with the nursing team/GP at your local practise and getting an appointment to discuss your concerns. Unfortunately there is no ‘risk-free’ option but they should be able to explain everything so you can balance the risks and make the right choice for your child. Being paralysed by fear is understandable but won’t help; not vaccinating is, in itself, a choice. Don’t feel bad for taking time to make your decision but speak to people who have the information you need rather than googling until your head explodes!

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 27/09/2019 12:42

And his febrile seizures happened 6 days after his 13 months vacs

So nothing to do with the vaccinations. Fever happens within the first 24-48 hours not six days later.

Febrile convulsion vs death Hmm

Get your GP to refer your dc to the hospital although a febrile convulsion 6 days after a vaccination might not be classed as justification for a specialist clinic. But perhaps talking with the GP will reassure you.

I'm a practice nurse and have vaccinated hundreds of children. I've worked with the head of immunology in our area who is often on the news. Vaccinate your child, please.

bigbluebus · 27/09/2019 12:43

I'd had measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox by the time I was 8. I thankfully survived them all without any lasting damage. A friend of a similar age has hearing loss in one ear as a result of measles and needs treatment relating to her ear every 3 months.

Have you discussed with your GP the risks of the vaccination and any potential seizures versus the risks of contracting the diseases?

leomama81 · 27/09/2019 12:50

That must be worrying OP though if he gets measles it will be much worse so you must speak to doctors about this.

Don't believe people claiming their child still had measles after the MMR, possibly first dose but there is simply no possibility of having it after the full two rounds, if this was happening then the current vaccine wouldn't be used to immunize.

Ratonastick · 27/09/2019 12:51

Please vaccinate. I had a school friend who contracted measles and died aged 15. I still see her family occasionally, they’ve never recovered from the loss. How could they? The vaccine programme has been so effective for so long that we’ve forgotten how deadly and the life long consequences of so many childhood diseases.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/09/2019 12:52

I had measles as a small child at the end of the 60s. Everyone I knew had it, it was a normal childhood disease then. It does have the highest rate of complications, but nobody I knew had any long-term effects.
I remember talking to the doctor who came to see me, and feeling rough for about a week,, being in bed etc. It was on a par with the flu, in terms of how ill I felt.

OneStepOneStumble · 27/09/2019 12:52

I had measles on my third birthday and was hospitalised. I don't really remember it but my mum has said it was one of the worst times of her life.

I also have crap ears and hearing and haven't until just now thought it could be connected!

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 27/09/2019 13:00

Dd1 had it at 20 months . She had the MMR at 12 months.
She was very sick for two weeks, ended up in A&e twice with her.
No lasting damage but honestly one of the most stressful periods of my life

SconeofDestiny · 27/09/2019 13:16

I didn't but my best friend at school did and she got Mumps too. She was fine within a fortnight. This was in the 70's. Mumps was quite common but measles wasn't so common. Thankfully, I don't know anyone who suffered complications from either illness.

DearTeddyRobinson · 27/09/2019 13:30

I wasn't vaccinated on GP advice (born in mid-70s). I was very ill with measles at age 4, I remember having all the curtains drawn in the house and being in bed for weeks. I have some hearing loss which may be related.
I had mumps as well but don't remember much about it as I was only about 2.
Rubella was awful, I was 9 or 10 when I had it.
Definitely speak to your GP about your concerns, I'm sure they can mitigate any risks.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 27/09/2019 13:35

Yes I had it as a child. I remember being very unwell and hallucinating.

steppemum · 27/09/2019 13:37

I had it as a child in the early 80s. Most people did. My cohort predated the MMR and I had all three diseases.

Are you int he UK? I ask becuase I had the MMR in UK in early 70s, and early 80s was certainly not pre MMR.

When I was growing up we were all familiar with the story of Helen Keller. She had measles aged 18 months and went blind and deaf.

The pp who had it AFTER being vaccinated will have had a much less severe version as their body already had some immunity.

But even with modern medicine, measles can effect your eyes and ears. It is a really nasty disease, and in the past plenty of kids died from it.
Mumps cause boys to become infertile, and while rubella is a veyr mild childhood disease, if you come into contact with anyone who is pregnant and give them rubella, their baby will be boren with severe disabilities.

longearedbat · 27/09/2019 13:50

I had measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, chickenpox, impetigo and glandular fever all before I was 10. I also used to get tonsillitis (until I had my tonsils out) and suffered with exzma. My poor mother, dealing with such a sickly child.
I had measles around 1963. I remember how ill I felt, and having hallucinations. My room was darkened as it was feared I might lose my sight. I also had a bout of excruciating earache. I remember screaming with pain. The only treatment was warm olive oil placed in the ear! The only thing I can equate the feeling of measles with (although it affects different people differently, I know) is a bad bout of flu.
