Has anyone had measles as a child or their baby had measles? If so how did you or your baby cope?

honestly with modern medication it was dealt with...so i'd say that although unpleasant- they weren't dangerous!!

This is totally wrong. You were lucky. You don’t forget seeing children left with brain damage after preventable measles meningitis because they weren’t vaccinated.

I had measles as a child in the 60s before there was a vaccine and when everybody got it.

I was probably only about 5 at the time but from what I can remember it was really horrible.

I also had mumps, which was quite painful.

Funnily enough, as best I can remember I never caught rubella. I made up for it by gettng chicken pox twice.

The danger of this disease is very real.
If your child were unfortunate enough to catch it after the MMR it is far less likely to be as bad and you will know that you did everything you could to protect him.
How would you feel if you fo nothing? Measles can be devastating, a child in my village almost died last year and has been left with hearing loss and sight problems.

I haven't rtft, but I've had measles, whooping cough and chickenpox. Measles when the I think back, my parents were very worried. I was in a darkened room for a few weeks; luckily I've had no significant side effects. Chickenpox I was off school for 2-3 weeks. No particular side effects. My year old DB and I both had whooping cough just after having the vaccination. I remember the coughing, but I more remember DB gasping for breath as he was so young. He used to climb up as high as he could to try to get some breath. He was weak for a long time afterwards. DM had to build up his strength. These are all horrible diseases. My three DC have had all the vaccines they can. I think the collective memory has forgotten how bad these illnesses can be.

If there's any way your DS can have the vaccination I'd definitely say do it.

I had mumps in my early 20s ... it was horrific!

God imagine dealing with a furious teen with a nasty avoidable disease he has because of your duff decision as a parent. That is not a position I ever want to put myself in...

Serious side effects, permanent injuries and death are rare, but not that rare, when it comes to measles.

Most people will 'just' be very ill for a while - but why would you even want that for your child if it could possibly be prevented?

I mean, we all follow basic hygiene procedures to prevent illness. We wouldn't directly cough or sneeze over people when we have colds. We stay at home with D&V. These are everyday minor ailments that we take steps to prevent, so I dont understand why some people are ok with risking far more serious and debilitating illnesses for their kids?
