Help me settle a debate (about crumble)

Just had some crumble I made earlier. Wed run out of custard so had it with vanilla ice cream. DP asked why bowl was hot. His theory is, if it's served with ice cream, it should be cold, but hot crumble with hot custard.

In my -correct-- opinion, crumble should ALWAYS be hot, regardless of its accompaniment. Who's right?

Also, should crumble be served with custard, ice cream or cream?

Hot crumble with cold ice cream or cold cream. YES.

Commonwasher · 27/09/2019 06:20

Cold crumble is not pudding - it’s breakfast.

CountFosco · 27/09/2019 06:32

Cold crumble and hot custard reminds me of the horror of cold meat and hot gravy. Just don't do it.

Crumble is better hot the first time you eat it but fine either hot or cold when you are having leftovers. Although I did have a pear crumble with chocolate in the crumble that was better cold. Strawberry icecream with rhubarb crumble is lush but generally it has to be vanilla.

I always serve it hot no matter what its served with.

I had some left over crumble and custard recently and took it to work with the intention of heating it up. In the end I couldn't be bothered making the trek to the staff room so age it cold - I've never eaten cold crumble before and it was bloody lovely!

Introduce your dh to a dame blanche, ice cream with hot chocolate sauce.

Floopily · 27/09/2019 06:58

Hot crumble, cold custard in this house. I hate hot custard!

Chugchugtraintrain · 27/09/2019 07:56

Hot with custard, cream or ice cream as pudding, or cold with milk for breakfast.

BeyondMyWits · 27/09/2019 07:59

Love the fact so many of us have/would have cold crumble for breakfast!

silenceofthemams · 27/09/2019 08:04

Hot crumble with cold ice-cream, cold custard or hot custard, or double cream. All acceptable.

Cold crumble is only to be eaten by the chef, directly out of the serving bowl in their pyjamas, when everyone else has gone to bed.

Davros · 27/09/2019 09:07

heronlanyon thank you. Yes, if people want to poison crumble with oats etc it's allowed but it ain't crumble. Gavel

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 27/09/2019 09:23

I actually prefer it cold, but It Must Have Oats in.

Also, it always has something crunchy in, whatever bits and seeds are going spare, last batch had sesame seed and sunflower seeds in, next one will have shredded coconut.

Sometimes I add olive oil to the butter.

I’m not exactly a purist where crumble is concerned.

ElizaPancakes · 27/09/2019 10:24

Hot crumble always.

First portion with custard and second with ice cream Grin

WhoKnewBeefStew · 27/09/2019 10:32

Crumble should always be hit, regardless of it being served with ice cream or custard

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 27/09/2019 10:38

This is worrying.

First threats of obliterating it with yogurt and now some actual violence...Have you people no shame?

ElizaPancakes · 27/09/2019 10:39

@ChardonnaysDistantCousin bit rich coming from someone who puts oats and seeds in it! GrinWink

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2019 10:45

I like your style @ElizaPancakes

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 27/09/2019 11:02

I celebrate diversity via the medium of crumble.

katewhinesalot · 27/09/2019 11:06

Crumble should always be hot. The ice cream should be melty not a frozen blob.

Barbarara · 27/09/2019 11:34

Mystified by the concept of crumble getting a chance to go cold!
It has to be vigorously defended with sharp elbows just to get it from the oven to the table unmolested.

Tweetingmagpie · 27/09/2019 11:37

I think cold custard is weird, I’d never tried it cold til I was about twenty and I wasn’t expecting it to be cold so I spat it out!

AdaColeman · 27/09/2019 11:44

Do you not like trifle Tweetingmagpie, have you had an entire childhood devoid of trifle?

Tweetingmagpie · 27/09/2019 12:56

I think I must’ve had it at some point because I know I dont like it! Custard jelly and sponge are not textures that go well together imo Envy

Oldraver · 27/09/2019 13:48

Crumble always hot and served with hot custard/cream ice cream at a push

Never OH .... with cold custard the heathen

MinnieMountain · 27/09/2019 13:52

You are completely right of course viques
I bought both from M&S last night (I'd had a root canal done so feeling lazy), and I'm ashamed to admit that I prefer them separately Blush
