Help me settle a debate (about crumble)

Just had some crumble I made earlier. Wed run out of custard so had it with vanilla ice cream. DP asked why bowl was hot. His theory is, if it's served with ice cream, it should be cold, but hot crumble with hot custard.

In my -correct-- opinion, crumble should ALWAYS be hot, regardless of its accompaniment. Who's right?

Also, should crumble be served with custard, ice cream or cream?

Yes!

Another thing I can’t eat anymore, but previously I’d have loved any combination of hot/cold, type of fruit, type of accompaniment!!

Just make the most of being able to eat what you like!

Me - lava hot crumble and custard
DH - warm crumble and cold custard

Both - only rhubarb crumble that is sharp , non of this sweet sickly stuff you get now.

Hot crumble
Custard or ice cream
Custard feels more "proper" though
Never cream but then I loathe cream

hot crumble, next day, warmed a bit,
with cream

jay55 · 26/09/2019 07:59

Crumble should be hot, the ice cream goes all melts and delicious.
I don't eat custard but I deserve hot crumble.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/09/2019 08:02

Crumble always with crime fraiche, I don’t mind if the crumble is hot or cold.

Ice cream and custard are too sweet.

I loathe hot custard. Vile stuff.

BeyondMyWits · 26/09/2019 08:04

No ice cream with crumble... just wrong.

Crumble=hot for pudding
Crumble=cold for breakfast

MinnieMountain · 26/09/2019 09:26

I wish DH and DS liked crumble. Or custard. It's not normal and I miss crumble and custard (both hot for the record).

Monday55 · 26/09/2019 09:37

What's his take on cereal ? I only eat cereal with warm/hot milk whereas DH only likes his cereal with Cold milk unless it's oats porridge.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/09/2019 09:40

My take on the cereal, Monday is that what you are doing is nothing short of criminal.

Seize the day sister! Crumble keeps well in the fridge and can be frozen. No reason why the only sensible crumble lover in your household should be denied.

If your DH and DS are still peckish on your crumble days they can have cheese and crackers, or a slice of toast.

Join the crumble revolution!

NoNewsisGood · 26/09/2019 11:55

Crumble = good.

Hot or cold, on its own or with something creamy. Who cares!

Eat crumble.

yearinyearout · 26/09/2019 12:27

Crumble should always be hot if having as a pudding, whether with ice cream or custard. If you're secretly eating leftover crumble for breakfast from the fridge, cold is fine.

SamBeckett · 26/09/2019 20:33

I want crumble now but I haven't got any Sad

HeronLanyon · 26/09/2019 21:41

chardonnay i like your crime Grin fraîche I ´mentioned yoghurt above and understandably someone shuddered at the thought. I too love to cut the sweetness not add to it. Sharp rhubarb crumble excellent with vanilla yog. Sweeter with crumbles with plain.
I’m going to try crème fraîche.

Ilovesweatybollocks · 26/09/2019 22:30

Hot crumble (preferably rhubarb but apple will do) with hot custard. Heaven in a bowl

supermommyof4 · 26/09/2019 22:36

Simply however you like it.
I like mine hot with custard but would happily eat it cold with cream or ice cream or not.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/09/2019 22:37

Good choice Heron.

Easy on the crime though...

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/09/2019 22:38

Yogurt is a big no.

It’s all wrong.

EL8888 · 26/09/2019 22:40

It’s way better hot

Davros · 26/09/2019 23:14

Hot crumble and hot custard.
And can I just make it clear that real crumble does NOT contain oats, almonds or any other muesli shit. It is crumbled up flour, butter and sugar. Nothing else

Apolloanddaphne · 26/09/2019 23:17

Hot crumble but always with cold accompaniments. I love ice cream, thick, pouring cream or cold custard with mine. Hot custard is an abomination.

Stumpedasatree · 26/09/2019 23:20

Hot crumble WITH oats, and cold or hot custard. Never ice cream.

Not averse to eating it cold either. Reminds me of my friend who found my leftover fish pie in a bowl in the fridge, covered it in custard, warmed it up in the microwave and took a massive spoonful expecting apple crumble and custard...!

shreddednips · 26/09/2019 23:22

It must be hot. The contrast between hot crumble and cold ice cream is what makes it delicious.

HeronLanyon · 27/09/2019 06:15

davros despite my aberration in the yoghurt realm, I fully agree with you about the crumble element.

Oats/nuts/granola etc are all very well, but the result, whilst often good, is not Crumble.
