Bercow's Vocabulary

There's been a lot of talk about John Bercow on here. Some positive some negative. But I think we can all agree his way with words and his vocabulary are something to behold! The way he just comes out with words like they are part of anyone's every day chat. I've learned two new words recently. Can anyone add any more?

Perspicacity: the quality of having a ready insight into things

Mellifluous: a sound pleasingly smooth and musical to hear

Executive fiat.

Not a small car with a sunroof.

Usernamealreadyexists · 25/09/2019 14:55

Agree - absolutely love watching him speak and showed videos of him to my son, who is doing LAMDA, as an example of public speaking.

Usernamealreadyexists · 25/09/2019 14:55

Oh and I rather like listening to Vanessa Feltz for the same reason.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/09/2019 15:04

I rather enjoyed when he said "perambulating whilst orating" this afternoon Grin

actiongirl1978 · 25/09/2019 15:13

I love his diction and articulation. The way he rolled his r's yesterday was magnificent.

Celebelly · 25/09/2019 15:20

I agree. But then I started a very controversial thread recently about having a crush on him so I'm
biased Grin

Raindrops2019 · 25/09/2019 15:20

@ByeGermsByeWorries that sounds quite rude. As though it is a new combination doing the rounds in an underground scene.

100PercentThatBitch · 25/09/2019 15:21

He's caught on in the States

The Late Night hosts love using clips of him

ForalltheSaints · 25/09/2019 15:26

Goes with the job, surely?

ParanoidGynodroid · 25/09/2019 15:35

I think he’s bloody marvellous. First time I saw him on telly, years ago, I was so impressed with how articulate and astute he was. Yes, I’m one of the Bercow crushers! 💖

Usernamealreadyexists · 25/09/2019 15:41

(Off topic but I’m watching the Commons on BBC live waiting for bojob to make an entrance - Keir Starmer is hot!).

spiderlight · 25/09/2019 15:54

I've got a bit of a secret crush on him as well. I could listen to him talk all day Blush

Gilead · 25/09/2019 16:07

One of the ( very) few tories I’d have in my house!

rainbowruthie · 25/09/2019 16:11

Yay! I find him hugely entertaining, I may have found my people.
DH finds him unbearable and tuts away throughout Bercow's pronouncements

BikeRunSki · 25/09/2019 16:12

I love a man with a big vocabulary.

changingeverything2019 · 25/09/2019 17:09

John Bercow is my guilty crush too.
Kier Starmer a close second, for his name alone.

Thrupennybrit · 25/09/2019 17:17

This is heartening. I like erudite folk. My son got bullied at school for trying to use a wide vocabulary, he is now in academia so all is fine now. But there is definitely a section of MN and in society that take the piss out of people who use 'fancy' language.

BikeRunSki · 25/09/2019 17:42

Oh yes @changingeverything2019

CactusAndCacti · 25/09/2019 17:55

Bercow is my little crush too. We only had the subtitles on at work but there was definitely a point at which he was struggling to keep a straight face.

actiongirl1978 · 25/09/2019 21:52

A brilliant one just now.... 'Craven lickspittle'

Mum2jenny · 25/09/2019 21:54

Sorry, IMO the man is a cunt. I do not care about his ‘vocabulary’.

TottieandMarchpane · 25/09/2019 21:54

If the Speaker was too badly educated to know the word “perspicacity”, we’d be in even worse trouble then we currently are, TBH.

dementedma · 25/09/2019 21:56

Another fan here. Love an educated bloke with a command of the language

HeronLanyon · 25/09/2019 21:59

interestingly he misspoke tonight. When he was telling the two year tenure no (conservative) we never do know who it was that points of order were not made during questions and that he needed to learn the procedure of the house (oo er) he tailed off and used an incorrect word (annoyingly I can’t remember the error - began with an ‘i’ - think he was trying to say ‘incontrovertible it similar but messed up.

First I’ve ever heard him do that. Agree he’s great fun to watch. Wonder what the new speaker will be like. He and Betty B are not so dissimilar.

Baguetteaboutit · 25/09/2019 22:03

I think he probably just has word of the day toilet paper and then tries to crowbar the whole lot in to pass the time.
