WWYD? Father acting strange.

DF has been ill today. It started off with him being snappy saying he felt rough and sleeping on the sofa all day.

I've bought him tablets, water, tea. Anything to liven him up but no, still miserable as sin.
He said he was freezing, but had gotten wet this morning and sat in his wet clothes when he got home..
I left him to it.

About an hour ago I went downstairs and found him pacing.
Apparently he's had chest pains for the last 4 hours, has called 111 and been told to go in.
I didn't hear this phone call.

I was speaking to our mutual friend who offered help if we needed it.
I told DF, and he said 'look I don't want help from anyone just leave me alone!'

He's been miserable and acting strange all day. Surely if he'd had chest pains for 4 hours he should've gone in? Wouldn't they have sent an ambulance?
I've told him to go but he says he doesn't want to.
If he's being snappy because of the pain then why wouldn't he go?

What the fuck is wrong with him? I've given up now.
He's been so rude all day and people being nice, trying to help are getting it thrown back in their faces.

WWYD?

How old is he?

Tojigornot · 24/09/2019 19:23

Probably he’s scared.

SeaSaltandLime · 24/09/2019 19:23

Early 50s

Totally out of character for him. He can be a grumpy old man at time but not to this extent.

Mood swings/anxiety are a VERY common sign of heart attack or impending heart attack. That combined with chest pains is very serious indeed. He needs to get to a&e immediately.

domesticslattern · 24/09/2019 19:27

www.nhs.uk/conditions/heart-attack/symptoms/

If he has these symptoms, off to A&E pronto whether he likes it or not. Heart attacks can be accompanied by agitation as people just feel shit and a bit panicky. The pacing and chest pain would worry me.

SeaSaltandLime · 24/09/2019 19:36

This is what I'm trying to tell him! I'm terrified, my mum died of a heart attack last year (DVT related though.)

He will not listen to me. Shouting at me when I try to access help for him, in whichever form.
Doesn't want to go to the walk-in, doesn't want me to call 999 or take him to get help, won't let friend take him to get some medical attention.

He says I'm fine on my own. Any offers of help are met with really rude, snappy answers and being told that he 'can cope you know!'
I tried to speak to him about symptoms and he 'wants to be left alone!'
Meanwhile, I'm terrified I'll lose him too.

Short of ringing an ambulance in secret and making him furious that way I'm unsure what to do. He'd probably refuse to go.

Have you checked for signs of stroke?

SeaSaltandLime · 24/09/2019 19:37

Gosh, I'm reading those symptoms and my blood has run cold.

Cold sweats - check
Nausea - check
Chest pain - check.

I've seen him clenching and relaxing his fist too, almost like he's got cramp.

Ring an ambulance, let the paramedics in to speak to him

ineedaholidaynow · 24/09/2019 19:39

Call an ambulance

SeaSaltandLime · 24/09/2019 19:40

No signs of stroke I don't think.

Face is fine, arms aren't weak, speech definitely isn't slurred or garbled.

I offered to ring 999 for him to speak to them but he has said 'I've already spoken to 111 and they told me to go in if they get worse so there's no point in ringing again.'

I agree call him an ambulance and tell the operator he has all the signs of a heart attack but isn’t being co-operative. That way he can’t just chuck them out when they arrive.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/09/2019 19:44

Call 111 yourself or call for an ambulance. Your inaction could be devastating. If he refuses to help himself, you need to take control here.

SeaSaltandLime · 24/09/2019 19:47

Again, just spoken to him and he says he has pain in his jaw and chest but it's subsiding a bit and is more comfortable when he's sitting up.

I mentioned that those were symptoms of a heart attack and he replied that he would have to see his GP in the morning.
Told him that no, actually, you can go to the walk in or A&E tonight.
He wants to wait until the morning.

Said I'm calling an ambulance and was told not to be stupid and dramatic.

111 would not tell him to go in if it gets worse. He’s refused an ambulance. Ds worked for them.

ThelmaDinkley · 24/09/2019 19:48

Phone 999 and what Teddybear45 says. Flowers

iklboo · 24/09/2019 19:49

Just call the ambulance and let them check him over. You don't need his permission. Hope it goes ok.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 24/09/2019 19:50

Call an ambulance. If he really phoned 111 they would have sent one unless he’s refused.

Do it now.

MrsMozartMkII · 24/09/2019 19:50

I'd call an ambulance.

I know it won't be easy for you as he'll verbally lash out, but he needs help.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/09/2019 19:51

Tell him you either leave for hospital RIGHT NOW or you're calling an ambulance. Those are his only two options. He's not acting like an adult so you have to.

Windygate · 24/09/2019 19:51

I don't want to alarm you but those are the symptoms of a cardiac issue. Call an ambulance now. He can be angry with you later.

whatateam · 24/09/2019 19:52

Call an ambulance. The worst that will happen is that they’ll check him over at home and not take him in. At least then you’ll have an answer.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 24/09/2019 19:52

He needs to go. A relative of ours ignored the early signs of a heart attack and by the time he got to hospital it was too late to save him. He died a day later. He MUST go!

notangelinajolie · 24/09/2019 19:54

999 now

NorthEndGal · 24/09/2019 19:55

I would call an ambulance if he isn't willing to call one himself
