Sainsburys going bag free

Graphista · 24/09/2019 14:34

Just received email from Sainsburys saying they're going bagless with deliveries.

I GET that this is supposed to be a "good thing" for the environment (though quite honestly I notice they're doing fuck all about individual packaging which I suspect would make a bigger difference!) BUT for me this HUGELY problematic.

I have OCD and so for me my groceries being in bags just feels a lot more hygienic. Than scrabbling about loose in crates that from what I can see are rarely cleaned!

In addition I live in the west of Scotland - it rains here pretty much most of the time! Already when it's wet weather the grocery bags are sometimes soaked but at least the individual products are dry!

I'm also physically disabled which means I already have to take 2-3 hours to "prep" to receive delivery of groceries (stretching exercises, bath, time for painkillers to kick in).

And there's more...

My flat is TINY the kitchen particularly so! It's a HALF galley so only one person can fit in there at a time (and even that's at a push! Dd and I have had to learn how to move in this kitchen so we don't constantly bump ourselves on cupboard edges etc).

With my disability I can just about manage carrying 2 carrier bags into kitchen at a time and placing on the floor when delivery comes. Drivers already get impatient with me!

I have sod all counter space (0.75m X 0.75m) to place items on, a few are normally placed on the cooker too but because of the hob shape only certain items fit. The ocd means I cannot put stuff on the floor absolutely NO WAY I could do that!

Fridge stuff takes careful management as small fridge and to fit everything in on fridge day is like setting up a Jenga game without a box!

IF I were to insist driver simply had to wait while I put everything away properly, well that normally takes me 60/90 mins!!

I have NOWHERE I can store crates (even collapsed) or bags for life

What the hell am I supposed to do?!

This is causing me GREAT anxiety so PLEASE be mindful of that in replies I would appreciate that.

Beyond - unfortunately OP says the sheet or blanket would still count as ‘floor’ for her OCD - not a great enough barrier. Otherwise I think it would be the best thing.

MarshaBradyo · 26/09/2019 07:57

I wouldn’t leave a crate on landing outside door, it could be a trip hazard or impede others.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 09:39

This thread is doing nothing for my blood pressure, god knows how it’s agfevting

Some posters really are so fucking rude and pig ignorant.

No one chooses to have OCD & it can happen to anyone, as can disability. I know this isn’t ‘nice’ but I’d happily transfer it from Graphista to some of you with your shitty comments if I could.

2ellenor2 · 26/09/2019 09:41

What about a big underbed plastic storage box you can wipe out and reuse?

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 09:46

I think they are all bagless now, Tesco's has been for years and asda is now. I do you have a table you can decant onto maybe? For work we have crates that we swop each week but storage is problematic for you, do you have a shed

Tesco has NOT been bagless without choice for years! It’s been
optional, now it’s not.

Given how many times she’s stated her worktop is only .75 x.75 do you really think there’s a table she can access that’s she’s simply forgotten about? There might be one in the lounge she cant currently go into - but given she can’t go in there, that’s really not going to help us it?

How many tiny flats do you think have a shed?

The rest of your post is a bit insane. No hygienic? 😂

Op has posted extensively on this thread about her ocd, how it effects her, how she wishes she didn't have it.

You come across as a complete asshat with a post like that.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 09:54

They’re really not.

Asda will do bagged deliveries for anyone who asks for it mentioning disability as a reason. One sentence in the comments box. Easy.

Waitrose still do bags for anyone who wants them.

The answer to this is to vote with your feet if it matters to you, and lobby the others.

I’m sure bagged deliveries for disabled customers is possible across the industry, maybe, in time, with more environmentally friendly bags.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 09:54

ProhibitedRodent

Fuck me, what a hypocrite! Your post was FAR FAR more offensive!!!

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 09:54

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles I'll call it whatever I want, what difference does it make? I'm well aware of the Equality Act of 2010 Thankyou. I choose to call it Disability Discrimination on forums etc as not everyone is aware of the change to the Equality Act in 2010

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 09:56

Yo can only do that if the others deliver to your area & Graphista has said they don’t.

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 09:59

@IncrediblySadToo Offensive? By saying that OP doesn't have a leg to stand on (legally speaking - not a disability reference - I'm severely disabled too) as they have already offered to make reasonable adjustments?

Yes I've become exasperated with OP because I feel she is putting barriers up at every single suggestion until she has bags reinstated just for her. I'm sorry for her situation and I CAN relate in many ways but this is madness. They've offered to ensure drivers take the crates to her kitchen and as the crates need to go back on the van, they will unpack for her too. They're not going to stand there whilst she unpacks crates are they? Even if they did, they've still carried them through for her! Surely that's even better than having the bags OP wants?

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 10:01

@2ellenor2 They already bring it to her flat door. They have also offered to bring the shopping into her kitchen in the crates for her!

I double dare Wink you to tell me where your face is and I'll come and say it to you, if you really want me to Grin

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 10:06

She said Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's all deliver to her address but eccentric substitutions were an issue with two of them.

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 10:12

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles Whatever floats your boat love! You won't get very far on MN threatening posters

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 10:14

Oh god you two. Knock it on the head.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/09/2019 10:15

Actually, I'm taking the piss, I think you'll find it was you who "started it" seeing as you like sounding like a child in the playground. I just pointed out if you're going to refer to the DDA, it's now the Equality Act. I like that I won't "go far" on Mumsnet though, I do actually find you quite funny.

Anyway, this isn't helping the thread so I shall ignore you from now on Smile

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/09/2019 10:16

Tottie I was just thinking how much I like your name btw Smile

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 10:18

Thank you. Now stop bickering Grin

LilyMumsnet · 26/09/2019 10:24

Ahem

Peace and love, please?

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 10:29

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hook line & sinker!

ACertainSupermarket · 26/09/2019 10:38

Hi there OP. I am a supermarket delivery driver and this is a tricky one. To be honest, it's a fab service for elderly/disabled and we are happy to bring things in and even put in cupboards sometimes. Your issues, though, are in all honesty beyond the scope of the service provided and I'm not sure I can think of any solution that hasn't already been suggested and rejected. Could you speak to a store manager? They may well have supplies of the old bags left over (clean, new ones!) which they could leave with you and then help you pack into them at the door.

Some of the no bags policy is environmental, but I do also think it's to make the picking process quicker, which consequently makes it cheaper! After all, you are paying sometimes as little as 50p for your shopping to be personally collected and driven to your house. In rural areas, perhaps like yours, we can be driving for 45 minutes to make a single delivery. It's a growing market but the profit margins are slim.

Itsnotahickey · 26/09/2019 13:38

Oh, it's definitely to make it cheaper. No time wasted bagging means more orders fulfilled by each staff member which means fewer staff needed. It's just dressed up as for the environment.
