Sainsburys going bag free

Graphista · 24/09/2019 14:34

Just received email from Sainsburys saying they're going bagless with deliveries.

I GET that this is supposed to be a "good thing" for the environment (though quite honestly I notice they're doing fuck all about individual packaging which I suspect would make a bigger difference!) BUT for me this HUGELY problematic.

I have OCD and so for me my groceries being in bags just feels a lot more hygienic. Than scrabbling about loose in crates that from what I can see are rarely cleaned!

In addition I live in the west of Scotland - it rains here pretty much most of the time! Already when it's wet weather the grocery bags are sometimes soaked but at least the individual products are dry!

I'm also physically disabled which means I already have to take 2-3 hours to "prep" to receive delivery of groceries (stretching exercises, bath, time for painkillers to kick in).

And there's more...

My flat is TINY the kitchen particularly so! It's a HALF galley so only one person can fit in there at a time (and even that's at a push! Dd and I have had to learn how to move in this kitchen so we don't constantly bump ourselves on cupboard edges etc).

With my disability I can just about manage carrying 2 carrier bags into kitchen at a time and placing on the floor when delivery comes. Drivers already get impatient with me!

I have sod all counter space (0.75m X 0.75m) to place items on, a few are normally placed on the cooker too but because of the hob shape only certain items fit. The ocd means I cannot put stuff on the floor absolutely NO WAY I could do that!

Fridge stuff takes careful management as small fridge and to fit everything in on fridge day is like setting up a Jenga game without a box!

IF I were to insist driver simply had to wait while I put everything away properly, well that normally takes me 60/90 mins!!

I have NOWHERE I can store crates (even collapsed) or bags for life

What the hell am I supposed to do?!

This is causing me GREAT anxiety so PLEASE be mindful of that in replies I would appreciate that.

I’m going to shout this as it’s been missed
wilko do rolls of carrier bags, they are brilliant and very strong
Keep them by the door and unload into them, then you have them for bin bags and to use as you do now.

www.wilko.com/en-uk/polyline-tie-handle-multi-use-bags-20-pack/p/0475638

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/09/2019 21:30

Oh no! It’s probably not that interesting, but a few complaints. I honestly don’t think you are alone with this

I’m going to have to rethink deliveries. Luckily I can use ocado and they use lovely strong bags that I re use. Before sending them back for recycling.

Graphista · 25/09/2019 22:38

SaveKevin I certainly noticed and thanked you upthread I've shown dd and she's going to see if our nearest wilko does them

Dobby - it's fairly low level on social media at the moment but I really think that is because a lot of customers don't yet know! Or haven't yet realised how it will affect them.

I'm fully expecting STHF next week when people start receiving bagless deliveries

I can only see the latest three visitor posts and it wont scroll down any further. Its nothing new and fb need to sort it

ProhibitedRodent · 25/09/2019 23:30

@Graphista Acting illegally? Oh come off it! I stopped reading your reply after that.

I'm sorry but I'm willing to bet you never told them that Sainsburys have offered to bring the shopping into your kitchen & unload for you?! Of course you will say you told them but you won't have done, otherwise nobody on planet Earth will have said they are 'acting illegally' for not using plastic bags!

Let me break it down

They have removed the bags which you require in order to carry your shopping to your kitchen - Correct?

They have offered to take your shopping to your kitchen for you

Thereby removing the need for the item they no longer supply.

They have therefore not breached any law or the disability discrimination act.
In fact they are very much in line with the DDA by offering to make a 'Reasonable Adjustment' - Which you have turned down. The point at which you refuse their reasonable adjustment, their liability to you ends.

You have no leg to stand on.

Ps, I do know exactly what I'm talking about on this subject I'm afraid.

2ellenor2 · 25/09/2019 23:39

OKAY I’ve been searching for this thread forever
Op I sympathise with you
I ordered from ASDA a couple months ago who also only do bagless deliveries
I live in a first floor flat, and have a young baby
The driver refused to even come in the main door to the flats, just out of laziness
His only option was to leave the shopping outside the flats on the main road, baring in mind they weren’t in bags so I’d have to go downstairs whilst holding my baby and juggle things up 100 times all whilst hoping nothing got stolen
I refused the delivery and this left me without any food or nappies, wrote a lengthy complaint to head office who then offered a £5 off voucher which I thought was disgusting, I even asked them what they’d do if I was disabled. I actually had a major op a few months ago and had to order food online... I’m a single mum btw
Refuse to shop with them now so I’ve been getting taxis back from the shop
Please take this further, they can’t get away with this, how are they honestly expecting people to carry everything up

HelenaDove · 25/09/2019 23:48

Rodent Disbelief on here can work both ways Just so you know.

And the store CANNOT guarantee any of that as every driver is different.

Look at the amount of bus drivers who cant be arsed to get the ramp out for disabled passengers. The bus companies also swore blind this wouldnt happen.

Experiences like 2ellenors show some drivers will some wont.

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 00:08

@HelenaDove I'm not sure what I have said to be disbelieved?! Everything I've said is fact which is easily discoverable by anyone....?

Also, OP would inform them in the section on her online order for any special requests, that she is Disabled and requires the reasonable adjustment. Then they will send a driver capable of doing so. Although I must say Helena, if the driver is not capable of carrying the totes to the kitchen, how does he/she get them off the van and to the customer's door? If they can't do that, they wouldn't be given the job? Besides, Sainsburys have already offered to provide this extra help?

As for the DDA, the supermarket are only liable for Disability Discrimination in this case if they're made aware of a Disability and do not make a reasonable adjustment within their parameters. They have already offered to make this reasonable adjustment.

Now, if they were to not follow through with it, AFTER offering it, then OP would have a very, very strong case for DD

ProhibitedRodent · 26/09/2019 00:08

DD being Disability Discrimination, not Darling Daughter, of course....!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/09/2019 04:47

If you're trying to convince people you do know what you're talking about rodent, it helps if you stop referring to the DDA which was superseded by the Equality Act back in 2010 Hmm

Having said that, I do believe they have offered adjustments and it's not unreasonable to expect someone to find space to store half a dozen bags for life or a folded trolley like I mentioned upthread.

I do understand the "logistical" difficulties caused by disabilities but drivers will help, IME it is their job, the company have confirmed this and you're not putting them in a "shitty situation" asking them to do so.
This is indeed a reasonable adjustment, you keep your clean bags/receptacles stored and they will load your shopping into it for you (and if you wish, they will carry it through to wherever you carry it through to yourself). They have offered this, you accept it surely?

This is all really it comes down, the only thing that is changing is you have to supply the bags, everything else is the same as it would be each week.

Saying you don't want to ask the drivers to help and you will have to rearrange your bedroom to find storage for folded bags is not helping your situation (to which I am actually very sympathetic, I know exactly how things that appear to be small issues are actually a giant fucking pain in the arse when you are disabled!).

The very fact of little things causing such giant pain in the arse-ry is why I try and look on the bright side and for possible solutions instead of focusing on all the negatives. I know this is very Pollyanna and possibly quite annoying to hear (sorry Smile) but it's what helps me.

It seems as though you have an awful lack of support from the agencies who should help you (I know what that feels like too!) and personally I would try and save my energy for sorting out crap like that, and focus my efforts on things like the DLA to PIP transition - things like that are (I think) a much bigger issue for you than supplying your own bags, and it will sap your strength to deal with them if you spend this much effort/time on what should be "the small stuff".

You have had shedloads of good advice and support on this thread (bags stored under a sofa cushion was inspired for me, thank you whoever suggested it!) and whilst of course not all of them will work for you, and some people don't know WTF they're talking about Wink I actually think this thread should hopefully be helpful to you, and to your DD as at the moment it seems to be very difficult for you both and it may be a good thing to hear so many people say this is solvable.

You can tell me to fuck off for being such an annoying Pollyanna, I won't be offended Grin but I hope you realise I mean it from a good place (I am awake at this time as I can't take any more painkillers until 7am so I can't sleep and all I can do is think about stuff I can't do anything about...it can be very shit!)

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 05:07

Haven’t RTFT.

I alternate my deliveries between Asda and Waitrose (weird I know).

For ASDA you just type in the comments box “Carrier bags needed due to disability” and that’s it, bagged delivery. No problems ever.

Waitrose still do bagged delivery as a standard option.

MittsMajuna · 26/09/2019 05:39

I hope things improve for you Graphista, I know you have been a MN for a long time. I remember the old days on here,

Take care,
Flowers

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 26/09/2019 06:44

Wait wt door with bags. Sainsbury's have said the driver will help you pack your bags. Pack two bags, while you take them into the kitchen driver can continue packing. You come back and take two more bags etc.

The rest of your post is a bit insane. No hygienic? 😂

We use Sainsbury's delivery and never get bags and its fine.

MarshaBradyo · 26/09/2019 06:49

Ok if you get a new Tesco bag for life each time you might find you have the same problem. No where to put it until you see your dd. Also she might be struggling with the amount of them shortly. Is it just one each time? Plus they are expensive.

I do think a switch to Tesco could be good but not sure it solves it unless you can keep the bag you buy.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 06:51

OP when you refer to problems storing bags for life are you thinking of the rigid ones made from jute or plasticated canvas?

SoupDragon · 26/09/2019 07:09

The rest of your post is a bit insane. No hygienic? 😂

You need to read and understand what the OP is saying.

We use Sainsbury's delivery and never get bags and its fine.

I'm going to hazard a guess that your situation is not the same as the OP's. Are you really incapable of understanding that everyone is different?

DuvetCaterpillar · 26/09/2019 07:41

Hi @Graphista, and I'm sorry for your troubles, your OCD must make life very difficult indeed.

I do think supermarkets are going to all move this way in future though as part of wider plastic reduction efforts, so you may need to think a bit laterally within the confines of the small 'clean/safe' areas you have. Could you get a couple of cheap throws to go on your bed, and put the shopping on there? It's higher so minimises the bending, and afterwards, you can put both throws and your duvet cover into the washing machine so they're clean again? The throws don't need storage if they're on your bed, a bed is by definition bigger than your countertop, and you'd know the food was 'safe' in your bedroom. The driver wouldn't need to come into your bedroom either - you could shuttle stuff from crate to bed then arrange at your leisure.

Best of luck, and thinking of you.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/09/2019 07:43

The rest of your post is a bit insane. No hygienic? 😂

RTFT

Why can’t people actually RTFT before leaping to conclusions. FFS.

NoSquirrels · 26/09/2019 07:44

OP I get my deliveries from Tesco and they allow you to keep the crates and then swap next time.

Just reposting this from a PP
earlier in the thread.

BeyondMyWits · 26/09/2019 07:46

Op - if you are ok putting bags on the floor, just not storing and reusing because of the possibility of contamination - then perhaps you could try the "separation" method of transfer (an OCD staple...)- you get an old towel or sheet and spread it on the floor before the delivery.

You then have a few "bags for life" that only ever go between the door and the sheet - the outside is then never contaminated, so they can be stored inside one of the bags. You then wash the towel/sheet and also put it inside the bag or bags for next time.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/09/2019 07:46

The OP doesn’t have anywhere to store the crates.

I don’t think people have the first idea what OCD is like and how controlling it is.

@Graphista, the Sainsburys FB posts keep disappearing. It’s being monitored for negativity.

stucknoue · 26/09/2019 07:49

I think they are all bagless now, Tesco's has been for years and asda is now. I do you have a table you can decant onto maybe? For work we have crates that we swop each week but storage is problematic for you, do you have a shed?

NoSquirrels · 26/09/2019 07:50

The OP doesn’t have anywhere to store the crates.

I thought - apologies if not - that much earlier in the thread she said she’d be happy with this as a solution and would store outside the flat on the landing.

BeyondMyWits · 26/09/2019 07:51

I get a Tesco delivery and they don't allow that here. I asked.
