Ok, I'm no Prue Leith but I know there's some baking experts here on MN...

I'm about to start making a cake for DS's birthday tomorrow. He's requested a particular character so I need to make a square cake.

Only have round cake tins. But I have just found a perfect sized square Pyrex dish...

Is there any earthly reason why I shouldn't use this? I'll line it with baking parchment...

(I have no idea if this a dumb question or just my head thinking it's a bit weird. Like drinking Cup-a-Soup from a bowl would work but is, well, a bit weird....) Grin

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be fine - I would give lots of excess paper either side though so you can lift it out.

OkayGo · 21/09/2019 14:33

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/09/2019 14:33

I have made cakes in Pyrex before and they were fine.

I never have problems doing cakes in Pyrex dishes.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/09/2019 14:36

I want cake now.

Madvixen · 21/09/2019 14:39

I've done cakes in Pyrex and they've been fine.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/09/2019 14:39

I want square cake

(please post picture when you are done!)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/09/2019 14:41

It won’t be perfectly square though - I suppose it will have rounded corners?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/09/2019 14:42

It's on threads like this I realise I need to use a more thread friendly name.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/09/2019 14:42

😂

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/09/2019 14:46

Is it Sponge Cake Bob?

theluckiest · 21/09/2019 14:48

Hahaha!! @Ihopeyourcakeisshit !!!

As long as it looks OK, I don't care (I'm not eating it) Grin

Right, thanks everyone. I'm giving it a whirl. I'll report back with pics. Unless it's a disaster...

I'll put pics up anyway. Could be funny.

Not Spongebob @Benefitofthedoubt.

Have another guess...

(I'll give you a clue...DS is in Y6 and all his mates will know what it's meant to be)

I hope. Grin

may I have some cake, please?

gavisconismyfriend · 21/09/2019 15:06

Pyrex will be perfectly fine.
Minecraft cake?

Maximoo2 · 21/09/2019 15:11

I’m guessing some kind of minecraft themed cake...

If so please post a picture as my DS is desperate for one for his birthday next month and I’m in need of inspiration! I was planning on making several cakes in round tins to stack on top of each other, then cutting the edges off to make a square (and eating the offcuts of course!)

Good luck!

theluckiest · 21/09/2019 16:28

Bingo!! Minecraft it is...

OkayGo · 21/09/2019 19:59

Excited to see!

theluckiest · 21/09/2019 21:17

Ah shit...well I've baked two square cakes and one of the buggers has sunk in the middle.

I intend to smother it in jam and hope for the best!!

I made something like this a few years ago @Maximoo2

Maximoo2 · 21/09/2019 22:16

Wow! Very impressed...that looks great but not sure I could replicate it!

MrsJonesAndMe · 21/09/2019 22:22

If you can cut squares, then you can! I made choc cake, krispie cakes and blue jelly. Bit of icing with food colouring and ready bought figures on top!

ThighThighOfthigh · 21/09/2019 23:51

That looks so good! What is the grass?

MrsJonesAndMe · 22/09/2019 06:58

Here is the one I did...
