Melanoma

I was sent to a dermatologist yesterday, about a black line under my toe nail. I expected him to send me on my way reassured it was just one of those things. Instead he has told me I need a biopsy and will get the appointment in the next week or so (cue panic).
The line has been under my toe nail for at least 8/9 months. If this is Melanoma is this going to be too late for effective treatment?
And has anyone had a biopsy and it turned out not to be cancer? The dermatologist said looking at it he was sure it wasn’t blood, which rules out trauma so what else could it be?
I’m in a real state and don’t know how to talk myself down.

Hi OP, A podiatrist spotted the same on my mum's foot and basically sent her running to the hospital via the GP with a blue light on her head. I cannot recall what the explanation was but it was not a melanoma (and it did look like those internet pics) and five ir more years down the line it has never been mentioned again. Hope it goes well tomorrow Wine Flowers

Thinking of you OP, this is such an ordeal. Is your DH going with you to the appointment?

Please try not to worry. I recently had a diagnosis of MM after 6 years of speaking to my skin specialist GP about a mole on my leg and each time being fobbed off as fine. She finally took it off (most likely to get rid of me) telling me it was nothing. Of course I was then shocked and devastated by the result. However the biopsy also removed it so in giving me my results they were also reassuring me it was gone (this took much time.) They did a wider excision which was fine and only a short procedure and turned out to be clear. My apologetic GP later told me that it's pretty common in their surgery. She also said it could have turned malignant due to pregnancy in 2017/8. I have to go for 3 month checks for the year ahead now. If you want to pm me with any questions please do as I feel it was helpful to talk to ppl I know who'd been thru similar. Best wishes

Good luck today OP.

End of last year part of a mole I had fell off. It had been a bit weird and crusty for a few months but I was only worried when I lost part of it.

It took me about 8 weeks to get a non urgent GP appointment (I didn't think it was urgent) but wasn't overly worried & certainly didn't think it could be cancer as it was on my breast and had never been exposed to the sun!

To cut a long story short, it ended up being melanoma & like you I was sick with worry about how long I'd left it & whether it had spread. It was probably about 6-7 months between me noticing the mole was a bit weird and finally getting treatment.

It ended up being a stage 1B melanoma & after treatment by surgery I am okay and the only ongoing treatment is regular dermatologist appointments for the next few years.

I saw upthread that you wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation and been okay so wanted to share my story. Cancer really messes with your head and the not knowing is just awful.

I hope you get good news today Thanks

Wishing you the best of luck - I hope it was good news, but if not please don't despair, there are so many variables in cancer - it is in no way "I've got cancer - well that's it then" these days, as you can see from many of the previous posts.
