I own a hair salon so AMA but nothing hair related! More like what do we really think when you're late etc 🤫

My clients tip all of us its totally down to them

If clients walk into the staff room by accident then that's absolutely fine but some stand in there chatting while it's the stylists downtime

I get the price rise to an extent with colour, it’s now a colour correction because it’s too dark/red/gold so instead of a quick touch up that you likely know the outcome of each product used previously n how it’ll react you’re now possibly working with a horribly over toned base from the extra step of removing the box dye. There’s more sympathy if you went to another salon and asked for your roots done n came out like a young David Bowie in his stardust days than the natural auburn you’d had for ages.. it wasn’t your fault but a box dye you knew it wasn’t going to be multiple tones and you don’t know the exact shade number (probably a mix) used on you.

The only thing I’ll never work out is why a mans hair cut is peanuts a woman’s (even trimming a pixie cut) is always 5times the bloody price 😂. DP nearly fainted when I told him how much a cut n colour costs.

Has anyone ever disclosed something to you that was really concerning or where you felt you needed to report it elsewhere? I know people who are in roles like yours where they get to know a person over time are often privy to things not shared elsewhere. My hairdresser knows all about everyone’s marriages etc etc but he told me that in a previous job he was told about serious DV by a client with children in the house (after seeing injuries on her neck) and had to take it further.

JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces · 16/09/2019 15:39

It's people like this that make me glad I rarely go to the hairdresser. Being fined for doing something to your own hair Hmm

I mean they probably need a break from working out all that overcharging of clients who have dared to touch their own hair.

My local hairdressers are lovely and I appreciate them even more now - thank goodness they don't run their business based on petty grievances!

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:42

Yes people have told me lots of stuff in fact I have a few code words with clients so that if anything really bad happens it's my cue to report it! (Never had to do it yet)

@Lunafortheloveogod

I totally get charging extra for a bigger fix too - but OP said she would charge extra because it takes longer (totally fair) AND add extra on top of that too for being pissed off (not fair and a dick move). Also pretty immature tbh.

DeNiroDeFaro · 16/09/2019 15:44

You wouldn't know if they had done it! They wouldn't tell you!

Of course, you would! If you've been going to that stylist enough to piss them off by coloring your own hair, you're going to notice if the price suddenly goes up!

As an aside, you do realize its the client's hair, not yours? What gives you the right to be pissed off? So what if you have to recolor it, surely that's your job and the service that the client is paying for?

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/09/2019 15:48

You wouldn't know if they had done it! They wouldn't tell you

Of course you would! You know a cut and colour costs £X every time you get it done so if the hairdresser charges you more you can obviously tell! Duh!

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:50

Not when it's colour correction! Most salons quote colour correction by consultation only (duh)

OP posts:
ginghamstarfish · 16/09/2019 15:50

I'm glad I'm able to cut my own hair these days, how dare you charge clients extra because you're pissed off at them trying to save money or if they were unable to get to a salon! Also why on earth do you think people should tip hairdressers on top of the outrageous prices you charge - we don't tip nurses, firemen etc who do a much more important job.

FireCrotch69 · 16/09/2019 15:51

After I had a miscarriage, my dad died from depression and my sister ostracised me, I went from very light hair to a box dye.

My hairdresser was annoyed, although she hadn’t lightened my hair, only applied colour.
I paid her a lot of money to get it light again when I felt better, but I do suspect she charged me more than normal. She claimed to have used lots of products and olaplex.

She didn’t know I had had the miscarriage, although she knew about my dad’s suicide and my sisters cruel behaviour.

I wonder if she did overcharge me if it is the apparent ‘norm’ because she was pissed off that I changed my own hair. Which I did because I didn’t want to bother with my roots for months and also had to pay for my dad’s funeral.

It is not up to you to punish a client for changing their own style. You do what you are paid for.

BorgDrone · 16/09/2019 15:51

Do you actually listen to what the client wants and cut the hair to that specification? I cannot get a decent hairdresser to cut my hair into a very short pixie crop! I had it before and had my hairdresser left to do another career and I cannot find anyone to cut it the same, they just will not cut it short enough, even when I ask! I have had enough now and am going to attempt it myself with some tutorials off Youtube!

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:51

I didn't say I expect anyone to tip! I said it's completely up to the client

OP posts:
Muhil · 16/09/2019 15:52

This thread is making me glad I cut my hair at home!
Charging extra because your pissed off the customer did something with there own hair is ridiculous.

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:53

This is AMA I'm telling the truth about salons! I'm not asking for your opinion on it!

OP posts:
horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:54

My clients come to me because they say I do what they want! If they only want the ends trimmed that's what I do but if they want a big change then I go for it! Maybe you just haven't found the stylist for you yet

OP posts:
Cookit · 16/09/2019 15:55

Wow.

I’ve started box dying my hair because I’ve had a baby and I can’t get to my normal salon easily (well, I can. But I can’t stay long enough for a cut and colour). I had a ridiculous moment when I thought “oh what if the hairdresser gets all annoyed when I do finally go back” and then I decided I was being ridiculous because I can do what the hell I like with my own hair....

But yeah - great to know they will actually be pissed off and charge me more Hmm

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 15:58

When I say I charge more for correcting box dye's it's not on everyone, for example if there's a client that has there hair done from black to blonde, then they stick a box dye on it, then they want to go back to blonde again! Quite often the hair can't take it, it would break off! But trying to explain that to some clients is impossible so we out price them because we don't want to do that client anymore as it's more trouble than it's worth!

OP posts:
ThatCurlyGirl · 16/09/2019 16:03

This is AMA I'm telling the truth about salons! I'm not asking for your opinion on it!

You're telling us the truth about your salon.

so we out price them because we don't want to do that client anymore as it's more trouble than it's worth!

So you overcharge them for a service in the hope they don't come back. If it's too much trouble then let them go elsewhere. What a horrible attitude as a business owner, so unprofessional.

horseridingaddict · 16/09/2019 16:06

No, they know the price before they start then say it's too expensive and go elsewhere.

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/09/2019 16:07

@horseridingaddict you might be telling the truth about your salon but most of those things certainly don't apply in mine. Speak for yourself!!

FireCrotch69 · 16/09/2019 16:12

Jeez you really aren’t doing the hairdressing industry any good with this AMA.

Why do hairdressers act like they are doing some sort of god given act when it is just...hair ?

ThatCurlyGirl · 16/09/2019 16:14

@horseridingaddict

No, they know the price before they start then say it's too expensive and go elsewhere.

Good for them, they deserve better treatment! It's their hair, not a salon's. Nice to hear they get a chance to escape this behaviour though phew.
