Apparently no one goes to the pictures anymore , it's the movies or the cinema. Am I a dinosaur?

Me and DH have been to the pictures this evening. He also says “flicks”. I tend to say pictures or cinema.

FAQs · 14/09/2019 22:03

Dinosaur! Although it might also be regional?

DramaAlpaca · 14/09/2019 22:04

Well if you are a dinosaur, I am too.

My DC look at me with two heads if I say 'pictures' so I've learned not to say it any more Grin

JMAngel1 · 14/09/2019 22:05

Right, I'm staging a revival! It was always pictures!

PennyNotSoWise · 14/09/2019 22:09

I've always called it the pictures. If I say movies it sounds like I'm trying to be a cool, college kid American Grin

Frangible · 14/09/2019 22:09

I am from the 1920s and deeply posh, and say ‘cinema’ with a hard ‘c’. As in ‘Shall I bring my opera glasses in case we have a bad seat at the kinema, darling?’

PennyNotSoWise · 14/09/2019 22:10

Oh, and my Dad still calls it 'the Picture House'. He is actually a dinosaur though.

Newearringsplease · 14/09/2019 22:22

Movies seem forced and a bit American Blush

My mum says the pictures - she’s 54!
I say the cinema. Although I never go as I hate films and sitting still/being quiet for more than 3 seconds at a time. Seems boring so I avoid it like the plague.

torthecatlady · 14/09/2019 22:36

My work colleagues called me up on this not so long ago! I used to say pictures all the time! I'm 28. Apparently no one says this in the area that I live in now!

OctopusNow · 14/09/2019 23:03

My parents say Pictures, I say Cinema. I'd never say Movies, very American to my ears but I expect younger people might.

nonmerci · 14/09/2019 23:12

Dinosaur. My Grandma always says this ‘what did you see at the pictures?’. Think it’s because they used to be known as picture houses.

I say the cinema.

nonmerci · 14/09/2019 23:12

Movies is definitely an Americanism.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 14/09/2019 23:13

Yes, or possibly from the Midlands (my mum's side of the family all use it) Grin

UrsulaPandress · 14/09/2019 23:13

Yup. Pictures.

Fatted · 14/09/2019 23:16

I will always say pictures!

I say cinema to my kids though, they have no idea what I'm on about otherwise.

ShitUsername · 14/09/2019 23:22

Yep same as Fatted

Newearringsplease · 14/09/2019 23:23

I am from the Midlands!!! How funny

OP posts:
fatfluffycushion · 14/09/2019 23:25

We either "see a film" or go to the cinema

pikapikachu · 14/09/2019 23:49

I say movies if I was at the cinema but film if I'm watching at home. I wouldn't say theatre rather than cinema though.

CoolCarrie · 14/09/2019 23:52

The Pictures definitely!,

1066vegan · 14/09/2019 23:53

I say going to the pictures or going to see a film. Movies is way too American.

jaggynettle · 14/09/2019 23:54

I was at the pictures this afternoon 😊

hussandchips56 · 15/09/2019 01:05

It's most definitely the pictures. In the town I used to live in, down south, the cinema is called the Picture House.

minniemoll · 15/09/2019 01:10

Definitely the pictures! Or possibly the cinema at a push, but never the movies Shock
