Apparently no one goes to the pictures anymore , it's the movies or the cinema. Am I a dinosaur?

I still say the pictures

Occasionally I say cinema

StayInYourLaneBoy · 15/09/2019 03:39

I say pictures. I also watch a film, not a movie. Although its pronounced fillum round here...(North East)

AgentProvocateur · 15/09/2019 04:27

I still call the swimming pool the “baths”. That’s how old I am!

IamWaggingBrenda · 15/09/2019 04:50

Or Canadian. We say the movies. The last person I heard call it “the pictures” on this side of the Atlantic was my grandfather, and he was born in 1906. So different terminology here.

Newearringsplease · 15/09/2019 05:03

Oh my gosh I say baths as well

@Newearringsplease, let’s kid ourselves that it’s a regional thing and not an age thing, then. Wink

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/09/2019 07:05

I am 38 and would never say "the pictures". I imagine it's something my parents' generation would say (70s)

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/09/2019 07:07

That said, the cinema on my street is called The Picture House. But then again it has been there over a 100 years, so... Grin

Broken11Girl · 15/09/2019 08:01

Yeah pictures is very outdated, sorry.
Never heard of cinema with a k unless in Geeman.
I hate 'movies', and generally the cultural imperialism that means teens want to sound American in general...
It's not EW it's uuuurrrgh - or ugh pronounces the same as an expression of disgust. You have a bum or arse, not a butt or ass. You are not excited for x event.

Broken11Girl · 15/09/2019 08:07

I genuinely had arguments with exP about his Americanised English, e.g. movie/s not film or cinema. He is from a European country

Broken11Girl · 15/09/2019 08:09

Am late 30s btw

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 15/09/2019 08:10

Say it here too! But our children don’t get it. We are mid-thirties, London, working class parents (I think it’s a WC phrase).

Broken11Girl · 15/09/2019 08:10

My late 60s mum would probably say pictures

sanityisamyth · 15/09/2019 08:21

Cannot stand the word "movies". What's wrong with the word "film"? And why are TV programs now "shows"? I'd rather go "to the pictures" than to an Americanism.

Turquoisetamborine · 15/09/2019 08:23

I’m from the NE and everyone says pictures here. Movies would get you laughed at!

Itstheprinciple · 15/09/2019 08:40

I still say pictures sometimes, but am aware my DD hasn't got a clue what I'm on about.

I still say 'I taped that programme' too, instead of recorded it! DH takes the mickey for that one.

Newearringsplease · 15/09/2019 12:48

I feel ancient now

OP posts:
StayInYourLaneBoy · 15/09/2019 15:18

And why are TV programs now "shows"?

I say programme too (but spelled the English way Grin)

Also seasons. It's a series.

Nonnymum · 15/09/2019 15:21

I go to the pictures or go to see a film. I never go to the movies or watch a movie. I hate the word movie.!

sanityisamyth · 15/09/2019 15:32

@StayInYourLaneBoy quite bloody right! I didn't spot the autocorrect to program - I'm normally good at that. Yes to the seasons thing too. Can't anything be English anymore? Why do Americanisms have to infiltrate everything?

1066vegan · 15/09/2019 15:53

YY to "series". Teenage dd has binge watched too many programmes on Netflix and insists on telling me which season she is on. Drives me mad.

Waffleswaffles · 15/09/2019 15:59

Thank you sanity :)

Nicolastuffedone · 15/09/2019 16:05

The pictures.
The baths
Tape a programme

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 15/09/2019 16:20

We went to the pictures on Friday
