Hi all, posting here for traffic.

I have come into some unexpected money and I want to buy a new iPhone. I would like one of those big ones with the large screen, lots of storage.

I am rubbish with these things and when I phone up they bamboozle me, can you suggest a handset?

Thanks.

Blossom

Get an iPhone (any iPhone) and smash it up with a brick. Then buy something reliable and built to last, ie. not an iPhone.

Phimma · 04/09/2019 19:28

Rubbish last post.

I'm on my 5th iphone, I only change because I want the latest. Never had a problem with any of them.

Go for the biggest that you can afford.

Iamblossom · 04/09/2019 19:29

Hi yes thanks ignoring that post.

So what version do I want if I want the ridiculously big screen?

I have always had iPhones and they have always been super reliable

I’ve changed to the iPhone XR and I love it. Screen is big and 64gb of storage - the camera is really good quality too.

Moominfan · 04/09/2019 19:31

I recently converted to apple from android. Didn't want to but my car wasn't compatible with android. Wish I'd asked before I bought it. Anywho not a fan.

Karwomannghia · 04/09/2019 19:33

iPhone 8 Plus is massive and has fantastic cameras that do great portraits (blurred background). Some prefer the camera to the newer models. Great offers with sky if you get a contract with them too at the moment.

exLtEveDallas · 04/09/2019 19:35

How much money have you got?

An 7 or 8 plus is the biggest
An XS Max is the same size as the plus, but the screen is bigger (it's edge to edge)

But the price difference is ridiculous.

beatriceprior · 04/09/2019 19:35

I've had an iPhone 5678. Can't really see the difference with any of them but tech is probably wasted on me

I literally just text and go on the internet.

The cameras have gotten better but really I don't see much difference 🤷🏻‍♀️

MadeForThis · 04/09/2019 19:39

The software on all iPhones is the same. There are a few hardware differences. Memory, camera etc.

I wouldn't go any older than an 8 as the software can slow down older phones.

Get iCloud storage too. 79p per month for 50gb.

which1 · 04/09/2019 19:39

You will get more phone for your money if you go for an Android - Apple you pay an extra 10/15 percent for the brand.
However if you're insistent on it I suggest not going older than 2 releases otherwise you'll find the OS / apps will stop being supported after a not v long time.

SpaceDinosaur · 04/09/2019 19:41

A new iPhone.
Get an iPhone XR for insanely long battery life. Decent storage and available in a variety of colours
XS for an insanely good camera and better screen. Fewer colour options.

XR is more reasonable priced than the XS
XR has more options in terms of memory
XS is more pricey.

Go in to Apple and have a play with them and see which you prefer.

I have an XS, my mum has an XR. We have different needs from a phone so went with which suited us better :-)

LouiseEH · 04/09/2019 20:12

The new iPhone is being announced in 6 days (I think anyway) wait until then and maybe some of the older ones will have a price drop 🤞🏻

I'm stuck with an iPhone 5 and a lot of the apps I use are no longer supported with the current iOS update :(

Iamblossom · 04/09/2019 21:29

Have had a quote for an iPhone 7+ with 32 gb storage for £469

Same size screen as 8+ apparently but £200 cheaper

poppy289 · 04/09/2019 21:36

I have an 8 plus and love it.

As someone else mentioned the new iPhones come out this month. Wait a few weeks to see how much the older models drop in price

drsausage · 04/09/2019 21:40

DH has the 8+, I have the 7+.

His takes much nicer photos, and apparently it can be charged wirelessly.

OTOH on his there's no home button so you spend your life swiping up and around, and because I have smaller hands than him I find it harder to make it work, and prefer the home button.

My two cents worth...

RosieCockle · 04/09/2019 21:45

If you can, go for the newest: XS Max. I have the XS but regret not having the Max after having a 7 Plus. Will definitely go for bugger next time.
As for storage, how much music/film/photos do you think you'll put on there??

RosieCockle · 04/09/2019 21:46

It takes about two days to get used to having no home button.
Also facial recognition for unlocking works even in the dark.

Fluandseptember · 04/09/2019 21:48

I have 7+ and really like it. Good photos, good screen, still quick. I’d go for more than 32gb tho... Mine was from Smartfone warehouse who have been good - have bought various second hand phones from them, all great. Unlike Cex

Iamblossom · 04/09/2019 21:54

Yes think I want to keep the home button...

OP posts:
Vikki69 · 04/09/2019 21:59

Fuck i phones, total shite, as their fans

SilverGiraffe7 · 04/09/2019 21:59

I really, really hated the idea of no home button and the facial recognition rather than the fingerprint.
About 4 hours after getting my new XS Max I loved the facial recognition and didn't miss the home button in the slightest... and the camera is stunning.

YesQueen · 04/09/2019 22:07

I just got the XR. Don't miss the home button at all and the battery life is fantastic. I do matched betting so absolutely hammer my phone on usage and it never needs charging during the day
Camera is decent too

Karwomannghia · 04/09/2019 22:10

The 8 plus has a home button. Mine does!

BizzzzyBee · 04/09/2019 22:14

DH said facial recognition is a pain in the arse. You have to lift the phone in front of your face to unlock it. You can’t just have it lying on the desk and click the screen - you have to pick it up.
