Which musical?

Loveislandaddict · 03/09/2019 21:31

I’ve was given a Theatre Token as a gift, and not sure which one to go to.

I haven’t seen Les Mis or Phantom, and almost nervous to see them in case i’m disappointed.(ie. over-hyped).

DH hasn’t seen Mamma Mia so am considering that (I saw it several years ago).

For some reason, Wicked or Hamilton don’t appeal to me (long shows? - maybe got this wrong).

Any others?

Ps. Doesn’t have to be a musical.

Pps.. Seen Blood Brothers (twice)

Pps 2 Did you know there’s going to be a film made of Cats. Looks really good.

Hamilton is fantastic, not too long, I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t enjoyed it. Matilda is also brilliant, for kids and adults.

Wicked is screechy and everything I hate about musicals, sorry.

Book of Mormon is apparently great if you don’t want a musical. They tend to have really good things on at The Bridge....

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 03/09/2019 21:36

Les Mis is amazing you will not be disappointed. Phantom also good, you are correct not to bother with wicked it’s awful I haven’t seen Hamilton

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2019 21:37

Phantom is amazing! So is les mis

Hamilton is absolutely fantastic and not too long but the story is a little confusing and needs to be read up on before you go

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/09/2019 21:38

Someone recently recommended Come From Away. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds good.

StillMedusa · 03/09/2019 21:38

Les Mis is brilliant.

Ditto Lion King.

Not sure where Jesus Christ Superstar is now but if it's on tour we saw it end of July at the Barbican and it was incredible!

Also saw Fiddler on the Roof last month in London... really enjoyable!

captainprincess · 03/09/2019 21:46

Les Mis is incredible. Have seen it twice and going for a 3rd time soon Grin

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 03/09/2019 21:52

Come From Away is the best thing I’ve seen all year! I really, really enjoyed it. It’s set in the aftermath of 9/11 so pretty horrendous subject matter, but very unlifting.

I love Les Mis, the much-loved original version closed in July and there’s a concert version on at the moment, with the new, updated version starting in December. I’ve heard mixed things about the new version mostly from people who are horribly biased though but it’s a great story, whatever the staging.

JanewaysBun · 03/09/2019 21:58

Wicked is AMAZING love it so much,

Les Mis also brilliant.
Phantom is good.
Mama mia also fun

Really want to see matilda!

LER83 · 03/09/2019 22:00

I love phantom! All time favourite! Come from away is meant to be great, as is Theres something about Jamie. Woman in black if you fancy a thriller! Thriller the musical is great if you like the music. If you want something different, book of morman or witness of the prosecution. I've just seen lion king which was great. Six is meant to be fun. Love going to the theatre!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 03/09/2019 22:00

I would also recommend Waitress if you’ve not already seen it!

Bumbags · 03/09/2019 22:03

I’ve seen Les Mis 19 times and seeing the concert in October.

Taking ds to see Six and Come From Away as well.

I love the theatre

Ds favourite is Hamilton though.

Top tip
Listen to the soundtrack before you go to any musical.

Honeyroar · 03/09/2019 22:04

I adore Phantom, Loved Warhorse, Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King. Didn't like Chicago.

I saw Book of Mormon las month. It was absolutely hilarious-and IS a musical. It made Spamalot (which was fantastic too) look very tame, I don't know how they get away with Book of Mormon!).

mamaoffourdc · 03/09/2019 22:05

Hamilton is truly amazing!

Kayjay2018 · 03/09/2019 22:07

@Loveislandaddict I loved Girl from the North Country - saw it 2018 and it's about to come back for another run at the end of the year

Does have Bob Dylan's songs in it, but they sound nothing like his versions. It's he best musical I've ever seen, just booked to go and see it again!

MeltingSugs · 03/09/2019 22:07

Book of Mormon is great! Saw it a few weeks ago.

MeltingSugs · 03/09/2019 22:08

Also agree BoM is most definitely a musical. A ruddy good one too!

Pashazade · 03/09/2019 22:10

Les Mis brilliant
Wouldn't bother with Wicked (excellent music, meh staging)
Matilda is amazing
Six is just fab, have had the cd in the car for weeks now.
If you can catch Noises Off it is an utterly brilliant farce

doadeer · 03/09/2019 22:12

I hated book of mormon - obviously everyone has different taste. I thought it was racist nonsense.

Phantom and Les Mis - you won't be disappointed they are so dramatic.

Matilda was brilliant too. Not sure if evita is on at the moment but that's powerful.

Cursed child is great.

Also Motown is so much fun! I loved it

Chitarra · 03/09/2019 22:17

Les Mis is amazing- you won’t be disappointed.

pisspants · 03/09/2019 22:21

Hated Les Mis
Loved Book of Mormon, Lion King, Thriller and School of Rock
Wicked was pretty good
Not a massive fan of Matilda

bruffin · 03/09/2019 22:25

Motown has finished im sure, so has Blood Brothers and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Les Mis atm is a staged concert version while they do up the theatre, im going for my birthday next week
Agree Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Waitress are all excellent. Have heard good things about Come From Away and Six
9 to 5 is very cheesy but fun
Evita at Regents Park is also very good, Regents Park Open Air is a lovely experience.
Dear Evan Hanson is opening next month

Not keen There Something About Jamie, found it a bit flat.

SomeEnchantedEvening18 · 03/09/2019 22:27

Les Mis
Book of Mormon
Jersey Boys
Chicago

All brilliant and would see them again in a heartbeat!

Heard good things about:
Everybody's talking about Jamie
Kinky Boots
Lion King
Aladdin
Hamilton

Staywithmemyblood · 03/09/2019 22:27

Loved Wicked
Everybody's Talking About Jamie was fab too 😍

grannycab · 03/09/2019 22:29

Maltida is really good.
Book of Mormon is hilarious but don't go if easily offended.
Les Mis was great but it was not the concert.

I didn't really like Wicked much
Mama Mia is good but the ones above are so much better.

wishing4sun · 03/09/2019 22:29

Saw book of Mormon last week was absolutely brilliant but maybe not if you're offended easily. Lots of singing and bad taste jokes. Would go again in a heart beat.
