Which musical?

Loveislandaddict · 03/09/2019 21:31

I’ve was given a Theatre Token as a gift, and not sure which one to go to.

I haven’t seen Les Mis or Phantom, and almost nervous to see them in case i’m disappointed.(ie. over-hyped).

DH hasn’t seen Mamma Mia so am considering that (I saw it several years ago).

For some reason, Wicked or Hamilton don’t appeal to me (long shows? - maybe got this wrong).

Any others?

Ps. Doesn’t have to be a musical.

Pps.. Seen Blood Brothers (twice)

Pps 2 Did you know there’s going to be a film made of Cats. Looks really good.

Ooh wicked is my favourite, I've seen it 5 times!
You definitely will not be disappointed with Les Mis. It was absolutely brilliant and I cried lol.
Hairspray is good too Smile
I love Cats and I can't wait for the film! Grin

Jesaminecollins · 04/09/2019 01:20

I liked Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis the best, probably because they both have favorite songs of mine.

I saw Michael Crawford in Phantom years ago and he was excellent.

As was Ruthie Henshall in Les Mis.

I am waiting for The Greatest Showman to come to London next year which I do want to see because I enjoyed the film.

MrsFezziwig · 04/09/2019 01:56

If you prefer old school then definitely Les Mis (but wait for the staged version). Saw Phantom 30 years ago, it was groundbreaking then but probably seems a bit run of the mill now.
If you want something less typically “musical theatre”, Hamilton and Come from Away were both brilliant.
I thought Matilda was creepy, but loved School of Rock.

User478 · 04/09/2019 02:16

Don't bother with Aladdin, it's overpriced panto.

The lion king is looking pretty dated these days, opening number is spectacular but that's the best bit by far.

Matilda is wonderful, as is Book of Mormon.
Wicked might have had it's day, but I do love it.

I wouldn't go to Les Miserables in concert, but the new production looks like it will be fantastic!

I'm not fussed by Hamilton. Apparently I'm the only one (but I don't know if you'll be able to use vouchers for it, or they might have stopped their ticket rationing)

Whatever is on at the national will always be staged beautifully.

Bonbonchance · 04/09/2019 02:49

Come from Away! You have to see it, yet to find someone who disliked it.

Seen just about everything on in West End & touring but Come from Away is something special. Seen it twice & planning third & probably more visits. Come from Away!!

bruffin · 04/09/2019 09:26

A lot of the shows mentioned have closed
ie
Kinky Boots
Aladdin
Motown
Jesus Christ Superstar
Jersey Boys

although they may be touring

Mrsjayy · 04/09/2019 09:29

Les mis isn't running atm is it ? Go see phantom it is fabulousWe saw it this year and loved it.

bruffin · 04/09/2019 12:17

Mrs Jayy
There is a concert version with Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Matt Lucas and Carrie Hope Fletcher for 16 weeks while they do up the theatre. Im going next Wednesday for my birthday and a little bit excited Grin

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/09/2019 12:19

Legally Blonde - lighthearted fun, very entertaining.

Mrsjayy · 04/09/2019 12:22

Oh yes the concert have a lovely time i love Michael Ball apparently his Javert is fantastic enjoy I am not Envy at all 😁 oh and I just learned from watching Matt Lucas on something Katie secombe is Harry Secombes Dd

nachosTrafficante · 04/09/2019 12:31

i hated hamilton, listen to the spund track before booking. cast were superb but not my thing. book of mormon was fab but v v rude.

BonnesVacances · 04/09/2019 12:40

I don't share the Wicked love. I was very underwhelmed by it.

I've heard lots of good things about the Lion King and I guess the soundtrack is well-known and you'll know already if you like that or not.

Jason Donovan is in Joseph atm so I'd probably go and see that again tbh.Blush It's in my Top 3 musicals (along with Chicago and Billy Elliott) plus Sheridan Smith is supposed to be fantastic in it.

Comefromaway · 04/09/2019 12:44

Les Mis is currently on as a semi- staged concert version whilst the theatre is being renovated.

Hamilton you can't currently buy with tokens although yuo now can for performances from 2nd December onwards. It#'s a fantastic thjeatrical experience. The choreography and staging and cleverness of lyrics is very innovative.

Come From Away is the show that everyone should see. I've see a LOT of shows over my lifetime and it's the best one I've ever seen. 12 actors, 12 chairs, multi-rolling, physical theatre, increduble music and an onstage band. It's phenomenal.

Book of Mormon (it is a musical) is one of the funniet things I;ve seen but you have to be VERY broad minded. There are lots of GASP, how do they get away with that moments.

Aladdin has just closed, Kinky Boots is touring (ends soon). We love Kinky Boots, its a real feel good show.

Jamie also a great show.

Waitress I'm a bit meh about. It's OK but there has been some awful celebrity casting which has lowered the standard somewhat.

Dear Evan Hansen opens soon. Tickets sold out very fast initially, but they released extra dates.

SIx is the one my kids are raving about. I guess I'll end up taking them at some point. It is quite catchy but not a traditional musical, almost like a pop concert.

Comefromaway · 04/09/2019 12:44

Bonbon - I agree with you whleheartedly!

Lightsabre · 04/09/2019 13:07

We've enjoyed Matilda and School of Rock - both traditional shows. Come From Away was great - a bit different with a pared down stage but very well done. 1hr 45 minutes with no interval. Great tunes and a true story.

hanahsaunt · 04/09/2019 13:11

@KayJay2018 - we have tickets for Girl from the North Country and can't wait! Finally getting dh to a musical so really hope it lives up to expectations.

Kayjay2018 · 04/09/2019 13:35

@hanahsaunt it's brilliant! Had to buy the album the day after we saw it and we had a few songs on our wedding play list. I'm now a huge Bob Dylan fan! Hope this cast do it justice and it's as good as I remember 😀

cornstarch · 04/09/2019 14:30

Book of Mormon for me

fergusthefrog · 04/09/2019 14:36

Matilda and school of rock are my current favourites although Mary poppins is my all time favourite and I believe it's coming back to the west end? It's insane it really is.

Phantom is fine. Les mis is good but very long. Hamilton I hated and wicked I love the songs but wasn't overwhelmed with the show.

Mamma Mia we enjoyed but it is extremely similar to the film and we've seen that so many times it's almost a bit underwhelming now!

Enjoy! What a lovely gift

Iamafanoffans · 04/09/2019 14:39

Loved Billy Elliot, Avenue Q, The Producers and The Lion King. Also loved Bat out of Hell but that’s more because I am a huge meat loaf fan, the actual storyline for the musical was a bit daft.

Not too impressed with Wicked or Jesus Christ Superstar. I really struggled with both to understand what the actors were singing, the lyrics were incomprehensible a lot of the time, to the extent I struggled to follow what was going on.

I’ve never fancied the ‘serious’ musicals like Les Mis or Phantom. They don’t loom like they would be fun, and I think musicals should be fun!

bruffin · 04/09/2019 15:54

Jason Donovan is in Joseph atm so I'd probably go and see that again tbh.blush
Forgot about the new version of Joseph. It is a lot of fun, but a slightly different production. Again though it is only a short run and I think its sold out.

IhaveALooBrush · 04/09/2019 17:42

Phantom phantom phantom phantom
Just sayin'

PHANTOM

Figgygal · 04/09/2019 17:47

I love les mis it's my favourite but also loved Priscilla queen of the desert and jersey boys

Didn't like wicked either crap story and a 1 song show

Next year I'm going to Book of Mormon and the king and I and we going to lion king later this month

Figgygal · 04/09/2019 21:06

Oh what about big which is coming soon

BackforGood · 04/09/2019 21:30

I don't understand the love for 'Wicked' - it was meh, IMO. Nothing dire about it but nothing special either.

If you've never seen Les Mis then it is probably worth seeing. Such a powerful musical, with wonderful, wonderful music. I'm not one of those that watches it over and over - it is very 'un-musical like' in that it is dull and grey and doesn't have a jolly, happy ending, but the music is outstanding.

I saw Phantom decades ago - again, quite 'a-typical' . The music is more operatic then 'musical style'. A long way behind Les Mis if I were listing them.

I've never seen Hamilton, but never heard anyone say anything bad about it.

My favourite musical is West Side Story - never seen a bad version of that, and the music is fab.

Hairspray is great if you can get to see that?
