We went to Cornwall for a week in July. We were lucky as the weather was gorgeous and there was plenty for the kids to do. Only complaint was a week didn’t seem like enough Wink. hopefully looking to go abroad next year.

How did everyone else’s holidays go?

We've had a Central Asia year:Tbilisi, Georgia in February, Iran at Easter and Armenia in the summer. All amazing, particularly Iran. Would recommend Armenia for those who like history and seeing a country before it becomes too touristy.

Cornwall for a week at the start of the holidays, was gorgeous, weather was perfect, I had a hugely relaxing break. Then the bank holiday we went to a cheap and cheerful holiday camp on Hayling Island with extended family which was bloody boiling and bloody brilliant.

Western Algarve in April. So good going back again for a month in November.

For our 40th Anniversary took a road trip in Croatia from Zagreb to Dubrovnik stopping at various places along the way like Rovinj, Plitvice Lakes, Split where we took in a couple of islands and Cavtat. Fab, incredibly scenic, highly recommended.

Off to Spain for a month in soon after a lovely summer at home. Can't wait.

Very lucky, I know.

@Tobermory trains were very easy. The only thing we've done similar (in terms of moving around) was a California road trip last year. The kids were great, though the 9yo definitely (and predictably) had a lower threshold for getting fed up of wandering around cities than the older ones, but mostly he was fine Smile. Re pools etc we did have some - eg we went to family friendly baths with pools with slides in Budapest, after the first week of city hopping we had 4 days of total relaxation with a pool in Val Trebbia then for the 2 days in Lugano we stayed at a youth hostel with a pool, plus lake swimming. Lake Constance was also chilled out - we had a pool at the hotel and lots of bike riding. I'd recommend it!

From reading previous posts it's sounds like Lake Garda, Croatia and Jersey are the places to go!

We went ok to Lake Maggiore in May for a week - beautiful scenery and gardens. It was our first holiday abroad with DC aged 4 and 1 (aside from visiting family) and quite adult - oriented as we booked an Air BnB in the centre of a town rather than staying at a campsite.

Then a week near Lyme Regis in August with extended family. It was fab, we had a massive house and lots of quality family time.

@EdersonsSmileyTattoo can I ask for suggested hotels in Benalmadina? I’ve seen some offers but don’t know where to start! (For our 2xDS, age 11&12, love a good swimming pool!)

Always been curious about Cape Verde and some comments have me more curious!

Just back from our first abroad holiday - week in France in a costal holiday park. Caravans, bar, entertainment, pool. Kids loved it, but it’s probably the holiday I’ve enjoyed the least. Won’t be returning.

We went to the Scilly Isles last year. It was hard work. Big drive and kid-wrangling on the ferry etc. But I came home feeling like a different woman!! Blumin transformed me. All the gorgeous clean air.

Bessiebigpants · 04/09/2019 12:43

We are just back from Menorca Would not go again! Lovely weather Beaches are heaving with no shade We always self cater as we like to try local food. All restaurants we visited massively overpriced and tiny portions Constant attempts to up sell on everything. We live in Devon I wish we stayed home For the price we paid for some grim meals we could have had some lovely local meals out and visited some of our favourite haunts. Live and learn I suppose

AlexaAmbidextra · 04/09/2019 13:05

North Norfolk in April. NT Manor House in north Devon in May. Then a week in the most beautiful hotel in Cornwall in June. The weather was glorious and it’s my happy place. Going to north Norfolk again for five days next week. Have just booked Cornwall again for next year.

Holymolymackerel · 04/09/2019 13:29

Disneyland Paris for 6 days in May. Lots of attractions closed for refurb and didn't like hotel as much as last time's hotel. Tiring but kids enjoyed it.

Next year is Cornwall for the first time for 1 week in June.

unicornsrule · 04/09/2019 13:45

Went to tenerife for a week beginning of August it was great lovely an warm
Great hotel and pool went to wayer parks

Mightywease · 04/09/2019 13:51

Ilfracombe for a week. Loved it. Weather was okay target than great but it didn't stop us from doing anything, well apart from going to Lundy as it was too windy.

Exmoor Zoo was great as was Woolacombe Beach. Plus seafood, ice creams and Devon Cream Tea. Lovely stuff!!

PickleJam · 04/09/2019 13:58

@Bluewavescrashing Which hotel in Jersey? I'm always looking for proper family rooms with a decent second bedroom (with an actual door)...

bestbefore · 04/09/2019 14:00

@khaleesi71 thanks...one to think about for sure...!

SecretWitch · 04/09/2019 14:03

We spent a week in Ft.Lauderdale. We rented a private waterfront home, complete with a salt water pool. I would get up and go swimming at 5am sans bathing suit. It was bliss.

Planning a November 20 cruise to Bermuda.

Bluewavescrashing · 04/09/2019 14:21

@PickleJam we stayed at the Merton Hotel. Highly recommended.

Babdoc · 04/09/2019 14:26

Had a lovely Baltic cruise to St Petersburg, via a long weekend in Copenhagen (the kids loved the rides and fireworks at Tivoli!) , and visiting Stockholm (the kids loved the ABBA museum!), Helsinki and Tallinn.
I’d like to go back and have longer at the Hermitage- you really can’t do justice to 3 million artworks in one day.

SapphireSeptember · 04/09/2019 14:32

Bothwell School of Witchcraft (at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex) around the start of August. Was mostly sunny but not too hot (bonus, as I was wearing robes) although it was really windy and we did have some rain. It was an experience, and I want to go back next year although I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd thought I would. (First time I've ever been LARPing, didn't know what the hell I was doing, hopefully next time will be better.)
So we had magical lessons, some silly stuff happened and I spent a lot of time sneaking round the castle after dark with my wand, looking for mischief and trying to sneak into the other Houses' Common Rooms. (I can see this being a theme.) The end of year ball was not my cup of tea though, very loud and very dark. I was envisioning lots of (pretend) candles and classical music.

SapphireSeptember · 04/09/2019 14:33

(Forgot to add it was from Thursday to Sunday although I went down the day before.)

PenguinsRabbits · 04/09/2019 14:34

Went spent a few days in Torquay which was good fun and Longleat on way back.

Then went to Sweden and stayed at a B&B with 50 alpacas, llamas, chickens kids could feed which we all loved for couple of nights. Then went onto Norway - scenery in Sweden was unremarkable but once we got into Norway it was stunning pretty much everywhere. Enroute we saw reindeer on road and sheep sitting in road refusing to budge for cars and who can blame them Grin

Stayed in Oppdal in Airbnb and in Ulsteinvik in Airbnb - both nice places but missed hotels. Crazily expensive in Norway other than hotdogs Confused Hotdogs were £1.50 but a Thai noodle box from a takeway van outside a supermarket in rural area was £15. Prices got worse in touristy areas. So lots of eating in and Airbnb, last 2 nights in hotel with pool where bliss. Weather was very mixed but didn't bother us too much. We went to beach, wildlife sea safari - saw seals and eagels from speedboat, Alesund, moose safari, whitewater rafting, beaver safari, Flam railway, lots of fjords including Geraingerfjord, Viking place where DS could ax throw etc. So great experiences and fun but not as relaxing as a hotel holiday and lots of driving. Magnificently beautiful and good for wildlife and scenery. Airbnb prices are very reasonable but very little else is in Norway pricing. Sweden much more reasonably priced as was Finland when we went in summer before.

chorusline79 · 04/09/2019 22:25

Galicia where we rented a beautiful villa stupidly cheaply. Beautiful area, stunning and quiet beaches. Lovely people, great food and fantastic weather. Was great and could have easily stayed 2 weeks instead of 1 if we had more holiday.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 04/09/2019 22:35

Where did you find it @chorusline79? We are looking for something very similar for next year. If you had a link that'd be lovely.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 04/09/2019 22:55

Disneyland Paris, was frigging amazing, except driving on French roads, no offence but the French are terrible drivers.

TickleMyFanny · 04/09/2019 23:03

Ibiza a few weeks ago and a few trips spread out in Italy. Bologna, Florence and Venice

PhannyMcNee · 04/09/2019 23:08

We live in Cornwall and had a holiday from home with friends to stay.

It was brilliant as we did all the stuff that makes it feel like a holiday - like eating breakfast on the sun terrace (patio Wink), lunch time drinking at sea side cafes and dats at the beach all without driving further than 3 miles up the road!!!

Adversecamber22 · 05/09/2019 00:23

Just got back this evening, had one week in downtown Chicago and then a week in more rural Illinois for a family wedding. Wedding was amazing a three day long one and then seeing relatives from all over the world. Week downtown inc an set gallery, classical concert, huge fireworks, botanic gardens and lots of food. Had a great time.
