Why would you vote for another conservative government ?

Read some of the threads about voting choices in a forthcoming snap election. I'm no Corbyn supporter but was genuinely surprised that so many people were prepared to vote for the conservatives after the last 3 years of brexit ineptitude/duplicity and more specifically the last 10 of austerity.
As a mum of two I've seen cuts to educational provision, as a health care professional and as a patient experienced personally the huge pressures affecting the NHS due to government policies. I also live in an area with extremely high levels of chronic socioeconomic deprivation and underinvestment - the prosperity of the last few years seems to have passed us by and probably explains why the leave vote was so high here.
I would really be reluctant to vote for the tories as a result of what I've witnessed over the last few years and I presumed I wouldn't be alone. I'm now not so sure and suspect that a boris johnson government would win a huge majority. I'm genuinely fearful of this having seen the individuals that johnson has surrounded himself with - not exactly socially aware liberals, more likely libertarian mrs thatcher clones on speed. Don't think we can really expect much investment in public services despite the promises.
These threads got me thinking about what drives peoples voting intentions. Why would you vote for a party that has made such a mess of things ? I just don't get it. I've traditionally voted labour but I am open minded - in fact I've read alot about one nation conservatism which appealed to me. Surely our fundamental aspirations for the country aren't so radically different - doesn't everybody want the poorest and most vulnerable to be supported and enabled into living fulfilling lives, that prosperity is spread equally and public services not turned into cash cows for private companies etc so why carry on voting for a party whose policies have been so divisive and destructive ie
Windrush, brexit, universal credit ?

I'm with you OP. I am a floating voter but don't get how anyone can look back at the Tory government and think yes, please more of that!

Scarlett555 · 03/09/2019 16:29

Beats me! It's turkeys voting for Christmas.

Samcro · 03/09/2019 16:30

its something i always wonder about. I assume they don't need food banks.

If it's them or Labour then Boris will get my vote

plantsplantsplants · 03/09/2019 16:35

Because either:

a) they think what the Tories are doing is good (bearing in mind the right wing press has a different spin on things!)

Or

b) they see the Tories as the least worst option, which given that most people seem to think Corbyn is incompetent at best and borderline evil at worst, I think is a more sympathetic viewpoint.

(Not a Tory voter, never will be)

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 03/09/2019 16:38

I agree with b @plantsplantsplants - Corbyn is the devil incarnate to me with all his cosying up to terrorists, anti-semitism and the death of women's rights and I hope to God that he never gets into an actual position of power.

Cheeseoncrumpets · 03/09/2019 16:38

I'd never vote for the Conservatives anyway. Ive always been staunch Labour, but would certainly consider voting Lib Dems in a future election as Im unhappy with how Lab have handled the Brexit fiasco.

I still dont think Corbyn is half as bad as the right wing press are making him out to be though. They are portraying him as a bogyeman to deflect from what's really going on IMO.

Soola · 03/09/2019 16:38

The Conservatives are still popular. It’s Mrs May that was unpopular.

NotWavingButMNing · 03/09/2019 16:38

Because of Corbyn.
Boris is better than Corbyn.
I am a lifelong labour supporter and would vote labour if Jess Phillips almost any other person was leader.

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 16:39

Nope. Sadly they don’t. Which is why we keep getting this complete shower back over and over again. They need to go.

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 16:40

Boris is better than Corbyn.

The man who just destroyed the tiny working majority of the governing party?

Come off it.

Why would you think something so utterly ludicrous? Corbyn has been an effective and consistently re-elected MP for decades. Johnson couldn’t run a decent bath.

Megan2018 · 03/09/2019 16:41

Conservative party member here, I’m broadly happy with how things are thanks, couldn’t stand May, like Boris. Voted Leave.

If you are part of the rural/farming community then there is no other suitable party. Could never, ever vote Labour.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/09/2019 16:47

I do t think there is any party worth voting for. Boris is a bully, Corbin is hopeless, not keen on Jo Swinson p, the rest are there to make up the numbers.

I feel disenfranchised.

Oly4 · 03/09/2019 16:50

Corbyn is hopeless but he’ll still get my vote over the Tories.

happypotamus · 03/09/2019 18:04

No, but I didn't vote for this Tory government either.
To be honest, I would struggle to decide who to vote for though.

leckford · 03/09/2019 18:13

Vote Conservative? As opposed to the nasty party Magic Grandpa, Abacus Abbot and Marxist McDonnell?😂

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/09/2019 18:16

I'd have to just because Corbyn as PM is too hideous a thought. Some of the ideas that are reported as potential labour policies are bonkers.

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 18:23

Further cuts to public services won’t effect us. We don’t work in or rely on the public sector. Boris isn’t offering us any benefit either as we aren’t wealthy enough to really benefit from what seems to be his policy (although who knows st this point?). From a selfish perspective a Tory government (particularly one under boris or similar) would suit us. On a principle further time under labour would set the country back even further especially under someone like Corbyn. Lib Dem’s will never hold power. Botis brand Conservatives aren’t good for the country either (but not as bad as far left labour). There are no good reasons politically so I’d be voting for tories.

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 18:24

*suit us better (less risk of tax rises)

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 18:26

@Deathgrip Corbyn is a terrorist sympathiser. Most people are better than Corbyn (even boris - yuck!)

Isthebigwomanhere · 03/09/2019 18:28

I will never vote for Corbyn so Boris will get my vote

Frith2013 · 03/09/2019 18:28

“If you are part of the rural/farming community then there is no other suitable party. Could never, ever vote Labour.”

There are plenty of other parties. Farmer’s daughter, remote constituency and we’ve had Con, Labour, Ind x 2 then Con in the last 5 elections. Also member of the Labour Party.

I’m sure Con voting farmers will think twice when their subsidies disappear in a couple of years.

sheshootssheimplores · 03/09/2019 18:30

It’s because there’s no one else to vote for!!!!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 03/09/2019 18:33

I didn't vote for the Conservatives last time.
