Why would you vote for another conservative government ?

Read some of the threads about voting choices in a forthcoming snap election. I'm no Corbyn supporter but was genuinely surprised that so many people were prepared to vote for the conservatives after the last 3 years of brexit ineptitude/duplicity and more specifically the last 10 of austerity.
As a mum of two I've seen cuts to educational provision, as a health care professional and as a patient experienced personally the huge pressures affecting the NHS due to government policies. I also live in an area with extremely high levels of chronic socioeconomic deprivation and underinvestment - the prosperity of the last few years seems to have passed us by and probably explains why the leave vote was so high here.
I would really be reluctant to vote for the tories as a result of what I've witnessed over the last few years and I presumed I wouldn't be alone. I'm now not so sure and suspect that a boris johnson government would win a huge majority. I'm genuinely fearful of this having seen the individuals that johnson has surrounded himself with - not exactly socially aware liberals, more likely libertarian mrs thatcher clones on speed. Don't think we can really expect much investment in public services despite the promises.
These threads got me thinking about what drives peoples voting intentions. Why would you vote for a party that has made such a mess of things ? I just don't get it. I've traditionally voted labour but I am open minded - in fact I've read alot about one nation conservatism which appealed to me. Surely our fundamental aspirations for the country aren't so radically different - doesn't everybody want the poorest and most vulnerable to be supported and enabled into living fulfilling lives, that prosperity is spread equally and public services not turned into cash cows for private companies etc so why carry on voting for a party whose policies have been so divisive and destructive ie
Windrush, brexit, universal credit ?

@Deathgrip Corbyn is a terrorist sympathiser

Do you regurgitate everything you read on the front of The Sun, or just Corbyn-related bollocks?

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 18:47

I must be on another planet - are you people seeing what’s happening right now?

🤦‍♀️

Jimdandy · 03/09/2019 19:56

Tories are the best choice for me. As a young person I watched in disgust as Tony Blair started an illegal war and destroyed this country with his other policies. The Tories had to introduce austerity to clean up labours mess.

Because people who voted leave are feeling like the job will never get done without the Tories.

Kez200 · 03/09/2019 20:03

Luckily down here, the Tory opposition will be LibDem. So thats where my vote will go (almost always goes there anyway)

Shouldbedoing · 03/09/2019 20:05

The Bankers caused the financial crisis, not the last Labour government. Austerity was a political choice and has shrunk our economy and increased the national debt to £3 trillion.

yestotwoplease · 03/09/2019 20:09

Never have, never will.

BubblesBuddy · 03/09/2019 20:17

Lib Dem’s are the obvious choice if you are remain and don’t want extremes in power. Boris is awful. Corbyn and his people are just as bad. The middle ground, eg Blair, was ok. At least we didn’t have Brexit! We barely heard about the EU for 10 years. Wasn’t it lovely?

breadwidow · 03/09/2019 20:25

"Further cuts to public services won’t effect us. We don’t work in or rely on the public sector"

What the fucking fuck? Every person relies on the public sector whether you work in it or not!! Even if you use private health and education. Who cleans your streets & empties your bins? Who do you turn to in an emergency? Private healthcare do not provide ambulances.

nrpmum · 03/09/2019 20:26

I will vote Tory because it was Labour that took us into illegal wars that killed my friends.

I will vote Tory because Gordon Brown spent every bloody penny we paid in taxes and nearly bankrupted the country.

I will vote Tory because Boris is the only person that seems to give a fuck what the majority voted for in 2016. It's literally his job! Instead of protesting and infighting there should have been cross party commissions thrashing out a deal years ago with an action plan.

David Cameron failed us, and now no matter which way this fall's the British people will feel betrayed.

scaryteacher · 03/09/2019 20:49

Perhaps OP because one gets pissed off with 'socially aware liberals' . Interesting article in the DT today about framing the post Brexit landscape in terms of culture. I think the Tories have gone too far to the centre left, and in parts there is no difference between them and the Lib Dems.

If Boris intends to Brexit without trying to ram the surrender document through the house again, then I would vote Tory. If he intends to bring it back tweaked, then my vote will go elsewhere.

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 21:03

You’re telling me you think the Conservative party at that time would have resisted involvement in Iraq? Seriously?

I will vote Tory because Gordon Brown spent every bloody penny we paid in taxes and nearly bankrupted the country.
Wrong. Absolute fallacy. The global economic crisis screwed our economy, not Labour. The origins of that were Thatcher and Reagan, no one else. A country’s economy is not like a household budget.

I will vote Tory because Boris is the only person that seems to give a fuck what the majority voted for in 2016
...based on absolute fabrications and outright lies. Brexit will make the credit crunch look like affluence.

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 21:04

Left of where exactly?!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/09/2019 21:12

My politics are slightly right of centre.

Corbyn is very left of centre.

David miliband might have got my vote.

As it is, I’ll never vote for Corbyn. Therefore it’ll (probably) be another conservative vote.

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 03/09/2019 21:16

The countries doomed
Anyone seriously believe the Tories wouldn't have taken us into war?
How can anyone think we are in a good position. I wouldn't trust this government to organise a birthday party never mind brexit

timshelthechoice · 03/09/2019 21:17

I'd never vote for a conservative government at all in my life anyway.

motorcyclenumptiness · 03/09/2019 21:29

The sole raison d'être of the tory party is to keep the wealth of the country in the hands of the privileged few. That people who will never fall within that tiny minority vote tory is both fascinating and baffling.

Deathgrip · 03/09/2019 21:35

Motorcycle is spot on (and has an awesome username to boot).

ssd · 03/09/2019 21:38

The thought of Corbyn seems to terrify Conservative voters and I think this is the only reason they still vote tory.
They know this government is an absolute shit show but they are scared to hold them to account in case Labour win a snap election.

fromthefloorboardsup · 03/09/2019 21:41

What's depressing about this thread and most of social media really, is however you vote, is there's so few posts actually explaining why you'd vote that way. If it's because you don't like Corbyn/Johnson/Lib Dems etc why not? If it's 'it'd be good for farmers/bankers etc' why do you think that? What's your opinion based on?

I feel like political arguments and debate nowadays have disappeared and become soundbites and slandering and repeating rubbish people have heard and no actual debating of fact and policy. (With apologies to the few posters who did explain why).

For example, 'Corbyn is a terrorist sympathiser'. What did he do? What do you think would be a better idea and why?

I get that people post quickly and might not have time to write an essay Wink but it's so frustrating to just hear things like 'so and so would be crap' with no evidence or backing up of arguments!

(I watched the Rise of the Nazis yesterday and it scares me how easy it is to manipulate a population. We all need to think more critically, however we vote)

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 03/09/2019 21:41

Death grip,
Corbyn is a terrorist sympathiser. The fact that you don't like it does not make it wrong.

trilbydoll · 03/09/2019 21:43

I feel like the last few years could have been slightly less awful if we had a more effective opposition, pulling the Tories back to the middle. I can only really vote Lib Dem or Green now, Labour and Cons have both veered off too far left and right for me.

Limer · 03/09/2019 21:44

Anything but Corbyn.

IceCreamConewithaflake · 03/09/2019 21:47

Because I can't bear Corbyn and the Labor party always over spend and mess up the economy.

ssd · 03/09/2019 21:48

A vote for the tories is seen, misguidedly, as an aspirational vote.
As if any other vote means you don't want to get on, or do well on life. That's why so many working class people who have been utterly shafted and will suffer if we leave the EU, voted tory and would do again. They think voting tory will help them get on, improve their lot in life, as it were.
They don't seem to see the tories in government wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire. They patronise and talk down to these voters and the voters doff their caps and bow down to them, cos they sound posh and have posh names. So they must be better than us, right?

WRONG!!!!!

It's baffling but it's really quite simple. Scottish voters aren't so impressed with a floppy fringe or a double barrelled name, aren't so impressed with a bunch of posh old Etonians. Hence why we voted remain and don't vote tory.
