Can someone clever explain this? (Calories and maths)

Going by the table below I need -410 calories a day to get to my goal.

If my resting metabolic rate is (I believe) 1800

So if I eat 1200 calories a day I have a deficit of 600.

So 1200 - 600 = 600

So to get to -410 ... I would need to burn a further 1010 calories? Is that right? Confused

2 stone loss in 44 days is a heck of a lot.. I would say that's probably right.

Can you not try over a longer period? 1-2 lbs a week is ideal really and more sustainable.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 01/09/2019 20:27

No. I think you would need to burn 1610 calories a day which would be ridiculous.

How much are you trying to lose and over what time frame?

dementedpixie · 01/09/2019 20:28

28lbs in 44 days?

That's not very realistic

I do know all about the healthy way to do it and what is recommended. But I’d just rather commit and see if this works.

You’re just setting yourself up to fail there. Set a more sensible target.

RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:32

Don’t need the lectures really, just wanted to check that my sums were correct.

How many calories to you plan to eat?

E.g. if you eat 1000 then you would need to burn 1800 + 1000+ 410 = 3210 calories a day

JellyMouldJnr · 01/09/2019 20:34

Doesn't it mean you should aim for 1800 - 410 = 1390 calories a day?

JellyMouldJnr · 01/09/2019 20:35

Sorry ignore me I see what you're doing.

RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:36

How many calories to you plan to eat?

E.g. if you eat 1000 then you would need to burn 1800 + 1000+ 410 = 3210 calories a day

How did you work that out?

Also I plan on eating 1200 calories a day.

@hormonesorDHbeingadick has it right. You would need to burn 410 + however many calories you eat. This required burn would be over and above what you burn just being alive (your BMR). It's a very hard target indeed.

RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:45

@hormonesorDHbeingadick has it right. You would need to burn 410 + however many calories you eat. This required burn would be over and above what you burn just being alive (your BMR). It's a very hard target indeed

But my resting metabolic rate is 1800 so surely that comes into it too?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 01/09/2019 20:48

-410 means you can't eat anything so if you need 1800 just to stay alive then you need to add 410 to 1800 to give 2210 to get to the minus figure. If you then eat 1200 calories you need to burn that off too so 2210+1200 = 3410 calories to burn off each day

RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:49

I burn 1800 just by being alive.

If I eat 1000 then (1800-1000=800) 1000-80= 200

So I’d have to burn (200+410) 610 extra calories a day to get to my goal.

So 2410

(I don’t get why I’d need to burn the 1800 in the above equation)

OP posts:
RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:51

410 means you can't eat anything so if you need 1800 just to stay alive

But I don’t need 1800 to stay alive. 1800 is how many calories I naturally burn in a day by doing nothing.

ISmellBabies · 01/09/2019 20:51

But it's not telling you to have a deficit of 410cals, otherwise it would tell you to eat (1800-410)=1390. It's saying you need to actually eat -410 in total, so eating nothing at all, you'd have to burn off 410 extra calories a day (ie more than the 1800 you normally burn) so eating nothing you'd need to burn a total of (1800+410=)2210.
Now if you're eating 1200 cals, you also need to burn those cals off, so (2210+1200)=3410 to burn off in total every day, 1800 from every day calory needs, and (3410-1800)=1610 extra calories to burn every day over and above your every day maintenance calories. Right?

Sorrysorrysosorry · 01/09/2019 20:54

1800 is quite high. How did you work it out? Just wonder if it’s worth re checking

^^

Ok that dies make more sense.

Thank you for the help!

I’ll report by in 44 days Grin

Maintain current weight is not equal to BMR though. As simple example my bmr could be approx 1000 but I might maintain weight at 1500

RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:56

I’m even higher on that calculator. I weigh 185lbs and I have a high amount of body fat Hmm think it’s 34% - I’m average height too

OP posts:
RoryGlory · 01/09/2019 20:57

But everyone agrees at 3410 calories a day? (Eating 1200)

OP posts:
NewAccount270219 · 01/09/2019 21:01

Do you have any idea how much exercise you'd have to do to burn 3410 calories a day?

sleepraptor · 01/09/2019 21:03

I think you need to burn 1610 as per Hormones said.

It says: maintain - eat 1,800
lose target weight - eat -400

You therefore need to burn 400 calories without eating anything plus burn 1,200 calories that you plan to eat. So 1,600 ish in total.

ELM8 · 01/09/2019 21:05

@ISmellBabies has it right maths wise I think..

If you're dead set on doing it I would cut down the amount of calories you're going to eat as burning off that many every day is near on impossible I would say?

NewAccount270219 · 01/09/2019 21:11

If you're dead set on doing it I would cut down the amount of calories you're going to eat as burning off that many every day is near on impossible I would say?

But that's what makes it so difficult (and why it's such a bad idea) - it would require doing hours of exercise on a pretty light diet. If you start cutting down the calories eaten further then you're in the territory of running a 10k on a salad. And doing all that exercise with no rest days. OP would find that her body protested pretty loudly and pretty definitively.
