Anyone else getting swarmed by massive spiders?

Is anyone else finding massive giant house spiders in their house everyday? Every night before bed I have to check my curtains and bedding because without fail I find one every single night. I never used to mind them too much but I'm getting more and more afraid of them now I'm constantly finding them.

Anyone know how I can prevent them coming in? Is there a product that anyone knows of that deters them?

Its just the time of year. Horny male spiders looking for some female spiders to chat up.

Tips I've heard recently-

They don't like strong smells like citrus, peppermint or cloves.
Conkers in a bowl by entrances/windows.
Keeping you house dust free and regularly vacuuming under furniture and in dark corners.
They don't like light or noise.

I feel like I've had less since using an orange scented cleaning spray around window frames and on floors. The cleaning tip is common sense. Not sure about the conkers but they look nice and seasonal so maybe worth trying anyway.

Someone gave me an anti spider spray once. I think it was clove scented, which makes me nauseous so I didn't try it properly. Think it was from a diy store or maybe Lakeland.

Whew! That was long Blush Who knew horny spiders were my specialist subject.

veryboredtoday · 29/08/2019 23:37

Yes, loads. Make me really jittery.

GeraldTippett · 29/08/2019 23:37

Conkers are apparently great spider-repellants, but can I ask, are you in Essex? I've had some whoppers this year, as have some friends in different parts of the county. No one else I've spoken to have particularly noticed an upsurge in numbers or size...

veryboredtoday · 29/08/2019 23:38

Massive house spiders but different to the normal large black ones. Slightly more brown with longer bodies

SquirellTamer · 29/08/2019 23:38

I'm in Essex and the spiders have been massive. They seem to like my bed 😬

EnidButton · 29/08/2019 23:40

Jesus Squirell Shock I'd move.

I'm suddenly grateful to be up North. At least they wait until the end of September here.

gamerchick · 29/08/2019 23:42

They're not coming in, they're coming out. They've been in the house all year controlling the beastie population, getting big and fat and now they're horny. They'll mate, stick an egg sack somewhere and the whole cycle will start again. We only really see them during mating season.

Poor buggers, they do a job all year and now they face getting evicted, squashed or eaten by the females after mating. Not worth being a man in spider world Grin

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 29/08/2019 23:49

Ugh yes the most enormous one got in the bath with me yesterday which was horrid !!!!!!

Rosere · 29/08/2019 23:56

There's a colony in my couch I think 😂

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 29/08/2019 23:58

But where do they live for the rest of the year? Why don’t we see them? Where are they coming from now?

This year has been the worst for massive spiders. At least one every night for the last week. Gah!

naughty40me · 29/08/2019 23:59

God yes! We've had loads this past week...feels like an invasion...one even jumped out of the loo roll as I was taking a piece to wipe my backside..!! BlushAngryGrin

Branleuse · 30/08/2019 00:01

I really love spiders, but having 3 cats and a dog, I hardly get any in the house.

MoaningMinnie1 · 30/08/2019 00:03

Not swarmed but it has happened, I'm really scared of them. I use a spider deterrent spray, around windows, on curtains and bottom of front and back doors; one was on a curtain the other day, I had French doors open and the curtain blew outside. The spray smells quite nice to me but they don't like it.

MoaningMinnie1 · 30/08/2019 00:04

PS I don't want the spiders dead, I just want them to go elsewhere.

IchiNiSan · 30/08/2019 00:04

I found an egg sac on my son's jacket last week 😱

PointlessUsername · 30/08/2019 00:06

Yes, there was a monster of a spider walking accross my shoulder last night. I saw it out of the corner of my eye. Gave ds 12 the heebies jeebies the rest of the night he hates spiders.

BerryPieandCustard · 30/08/2019 04:36

I’m awake at 4:30 in the morning as I can’t seem to sleep properly after finding a giant spider before I went to bed... 11pm, move my pillow to get my pyjamas out from underneath and there he is 😩 I caught him on a glass but now every time I move and feel my hair against my face I jump.

Am also in Essex, in the past 3 weeks have had 4 big ones 🤨

CasparBloomberg · 30/08/2019 05:18

This week we keep finding these monsters in my daughters bedroom. Going to shift all the furniture and hoover everything today to hopefully disturb the last of them, if there are any more. Can’t bear the thought of them mating and being more next year, thanks for that tip!
We are in Hampshire.

Nonameslob · 30/08/2019 06:15

Same here, last 3 nights massive house spiders in the bath when I've got up to use loo in the night. Never been this bad before. I keep checking everywhere now. Stupid dog is scared of them too! Grin We're not far from Essex.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 30/08/2019 06:58

Anyone else getting swarmed by massive spiders?
SleepymrsE · 30/08/2019 07:08

Really wishing I hadn’t read this thread! We’ve had a few big ones but not enjoying hearing about those under pillows *shudders

Surfskatefamily · 30/08/2019 07:13

I kid you not one was on my face when I woke up in the middle of the night 😱
A big Big bugger.
Im afraid of them too and that so freaked me out

madcatladyforever · 30/08/2019 07:15

Yes, there was a monster in my bedroom last night and I lost it. It's in here somewhere, I will never sleep again.

salty78 · 30/08/2019 07:31

We came back from holiday yesterday and had to deal with 3 over the course of the evening. We pulled the beds and sofa apart before using them to avoid any nasty surprises.

Have come back from holiday in August before to spider wars in the bath where 4 got trapped at once and must have had a fight resulting in loss of limbs and death, which was nice.

We generally get at least one a night running around at this time of year and DH puts them outside, which I feel a bit bad about but they freak us all out. The cat likes to catch flies but is no help at all with spiders.
