I've recently learnt on this thread I'm thick as fuck

I'm with you there tiredandhungry247 Sad

chomalungma · 27/08/2019 17:36

Colour is fascinating.

The interaction of light with an object is amazing - and the colour of the light that interacts with it affects what we see.

Then there's the receptors in the eyes - how they react to the colours, Photopsins en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photopsin and how they react to produce stimulus that the brain eventually sees as colour.

It's an incredible process.

Slazengerbag · 27/08/2019 18:11

If you were to spell out numbers from one you would not use the letter A until you reach one thousand.

iklboo · 27/08/2019 18:21

but is it the same stuff they used to use to “blank out” windows years ago when they were refitting inside?

No, that's Windowlene. It's a thick window cleaning fluid that's opaque when you first put it on (and needs a shit ton of elbow grease to rub in). Stinks too.

iklboo · 27/08/2019 18:22

If you were to spell out numbers from one you would not use the letter A until you reach one thousand.

Weird. What about one hundred and one? Or does that not count?

WeshMaGueule · 27/08/2019 18:22

Or, alterntively, one hundred And one.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2019 19:28

The 'dumb' people are those who aren't interested in discovering new facts, or who are labouring under the delusion that they know everything worth knowing.

Cheeseoncrumpets · 27/08/2019 19:37

That there is a 'Premier League 2'. Basically all of the teams in the premier league obviously have a B Team or reserve team and they have their own league called the Premier League 2 that runs in tandem with the main PL. They even have their own trophy!

I had no idea this even existed until about a month ago!

(Well it blew my mind anyway...)

Binglebong · 27/08/2019 20:05

To the person who wrote : MY Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets. please can you say what order you think the planets are?

Thank you

(And it's My Very Easy Method Just Say Nine Planets Grin)

peachgreen · 27/08/2019 20:08

@binglebong Where's Uranus in your mnemonic? Or am I missing something?

Binglebong · 27/08/2019 20:12

Sorry, should have been My Very Easy Method Just Say 'ur (your) Nine Planets. It works better spoken than written.

MollyButton · 27/08/2019 20:32

There is a lot of evidence that language affects how we perceive colour. an obvious one is that people with different language systems differentiate between colours and shades differently.

But it is obviously untrue that we have evolved to perceive blue at any point since written records exist - the oldest written records we have are what 5000 years old? That is far too short a time scale for evolution. In fact it is commonly agreed that whilst people have evolved for spoken language, there is no similar adaptation for written language.

tirednhungry247 · 27/08/2019 20:32

@ErrolTheDragon I hear ya 🙌🏼

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2019 20:45

It's also apparent that creatures with no language at all can perceive different colours, colour is an important means of communication in some cases.

FawnDrench · 27/08/2019 20:52

When you write TWENTY NINE in capitals, like this - it's made up of 29 straight lines.

Milkstick · 27/08/2019 21:33

Did nobody else learn it as 'my very early morning jam sandwiches usually nauseate people'?

The key fob for my ford galaxy will open windows and sun roof if you press open long enough and also closes them when you lock the car

ContinuityError · 27/08/2019 21:49

I’ve known horses differentiate yellow from white, and red from other colours. They shouldn’t be able to, but they did.

steppemum · 27/08/2019 22:11

In the Netherlands it's considered extremely rude and inappropriate to say that you are hungry

I just asked dh about this, he is Dutch.
He thought for a moment and said, yes sort of.
There are 2 words commonly used for hunger. One means hunger and is a veyr strong word, and one means something similar to peckish.
It is considered rude to say I'm hungry as that is the word you use for famine and real hunger. It is considered appropriate to say I'm peckish, in other words, I'm reayd for dinner.

Don't think it is really a thing though.

wanderings · 27/08/2019 22:15

The number 142857 is a lovely number: look at what happens if you multiply it by 2. Then try multiplying by 142857 by 3, and other numbers up to 7. What happens?

Also try 142 + 857.

steppemum · 27/08/2019 22:17

Colour, I used to live in Indonesia. While Indonesian has many words for colour, most people use a very small group.
So things are white, and that covers most pastels and creams/beige etc.
or red, that covers all shades of orange red and pink, unless pastel.
or blue, which covers most purples (unless they are red) and all shades of blue.
green, whcih covers many shades that we would consider to be yellow

and so on.
So if you ask for a red T-shirt to match your red skirt, you could get offered many colours!

But it is classification that varies, they see the colours, just group them differently
