Hello, I am a long time used of MN - bobble plate, etc. I wanted to start this thread as it's a silly thing but it's important to me. Over the last few years I've had crippling anxiety which has made it very hard sometimes to leave the house or go anywhere except essential.

My lovely friend has gifted me her camera for when I go on short breaks and I feel an extra responsibility for it - she has very limited mobility due to a debilitating condition and knows that it has been my aim since feeling better to go out with my partner and see more of the UK and get some good photographs we can then look at together. She knows this is to encourage me, especially since I only want to fly every few years now, and really enjoy going to new parts of the UK.

I am not claiming to be an official photographer! Holiday snaps as the starting point - not just beaches or whatever. I have been to Skye for example and there are stunning view there. Where else is there to go? What are your favourite places to take photos in the UK?

TLDR: a lovely friend has gifted me her camera when I go on holidays to celebrate my anxiety being managed better. When I go on short breaks, where is a good place to get some nice photos to share with her/ and to enjoy visiting generally?

I took a massive panoramic photo of Leeds from the skylounge. I had it blown up to 3'x2' and now takes up a huge portion of our living room wall. I sold 4 copies of that photo too.

I recently sold a photo of Flamborough Head lighthouse at dusk.

We went to Liverpool and I took lots of photos from the top of the Eye.

I love taking photos in National Trust places - my favourites are Fountains Abbey and Wentworth Castle Gardens.

I rarely travel and haven't been on holiday for years due to having no money but I do take my camera everywhere I go, even if it's to my local city.

North Yorkshire, the view from the top of Sutton Bank is beautiful, also almost anywhere in the North York Moors and Whitby. Even in winter, it's impossible to take a bad picture of those views!

Cosby beach at sunset, with the gormley statues.

View from the Minnack (outdoor) theatre in Cornwall. Just stunning!

You can visit without seeing a play.

Plockton beach in Scotland has to be the prettiest view in UK. Palm trees! A gorgeous horseshoe-shaped natural harbour dotted with sailing boats, nestling in gorgeous hills purple with heather, and there are long-haired Highland cattle chomping on seaweed along the tide line.

You'll love it.

milliefiori · 25/08/2019 11:20

Not my pic, this is from Google but here's Plockton and this is not by any means the best image of it. Wait until you see the sunset flooding the sky and the cattle and the tiny sand bars with palm trees. It's magical.

Knaresborough is beautiful. So many things to do nearby as well.

Oldraver · 25/08/2019 12:05

Well I think you can take photos that are meaningful or just pretty from anywhere

My partner stopped to take this view of the mist. And rising sun over the Evenlode Valley

Can you afford NT or EH membership for the year? You can get some beautiful pictures of their sites.

Is it landscapes you really enjoy? Do you have friends with kids/dogs/cats/whatnot who would really enjoy an informal photo shoot?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 25/08/2019 12:07

And yes there's so so much to see in the UK. It's amazing.

DieCryHate · 25/08/2019 12:22

I’m biased as I live in the SW but I find Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset so beautiful to photograph. This is clevedon pier and Kynance cove.

Another vote for Devon and Cornwall! The sunset off lizard point was gorgeous.

The Lake District can very pretty but the best views can require quite a hike, not for the inexperienced! A nice beginner’s walk is up Orrest Head, Windermere. From the top you can see the whole lake and (clear skies depending) the larger mountains to the east, the Yorkshire Dales to the west and maybe even a glimpse of morecombe bay to the south.

IggyAce · 25/08/2019 21:28

North Wales, lots of amazing views, light houses, beaches, waterfalls and mountains to photograph. The village of Beddgelert is a beautiful place to stay.
The waterfall picture was taken on our recent visit.
Agree National Trust places are amazing places to photograph.

I agree with a pp that anywhere caught at the right moment can be beautiful but where stands out for me lately was loch lomand and the trossochs - couldn't take a bad picture!

isabellerossignol · 25/08/2019 22:01

You need the North Antrim coast for photo opportunities. Dunluce Castle and Mussenden Temple being particularly photogenic.

If that is too far to travel, my second vote would be for North Wales, the coastline there is beautiful too.
