What are your lovely UK views to travel to and photograph - so I can share with my lovely friend?

Hello, I am a long time used of MN - bobble plate, etc. I wanted to start this thread as it's a silly thing but it's important to me. Over the last few years I've had crippling anxiety which has made it very hard sometimes to leave the house or go anywhere except essential.

My lovely friend has gifted me her camera for when I go on short breaks and I feel an extra responsibility for it - she has very limited mobility due to a debilitating condition and knows that it has been my aim since feeling better to go out with my partner and see more of the UK and get some good photographs we can then look at together. She knows this is to encourage me, especially since I only want to fly every few years now, and really enjoy going to new parts of the UK.

I am not claiming to be an official photographer! Holiday snaps as the starting point - not just beaches or whatever. I have been to Skye for example and there are stunning view there. Where else is there to go? What are your favourite places to take photos in the UK?

TLDR: a lovely friend has gifted me her camera when I go on holidays to celebrate my anxiety being managed better. When I go on short breaks, where is a good place to get some nice photos to share with her/ and to enjoy visiting generally?

I was coming on to say particularly, Llandudno, North Wales but can see you have already had lots of recommendations for that.

Failing that Whitby and Staithes in North Yorkshire both photograph well as do the cliffs at Saltburn.

Go to Mentmore, park along The Green and photograph The Stag, one of the oldest buildings in the village. Then walk around wondering at the chocolate box appearance of it all. Walk into Howell Hill Close and I dare you to not be awed by the view to the south. Then head towards the church and be humbled by the simplest war memorial I've ever seen. The village is on a hill and the views all around are stunning.

I'm there later this week, so I'll take some photos to prove me right. That'll make a change! :o

Why not take your camera out tomorrow and just try taking some shots of where you live? Aim for an hour before sunset (the golden hour) when everything’s bathed in warm golden light - around 7pm. Just go for it!

UnalliterativeGeorge · 25/08/2019 22:47

The Fens. Or pretty much anywhere in Norfolk. It's my favourite place to be.

Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long barrow and any views from around there. They aren't the show ponies of the landscape world but when the mists rise through the Avebury stones at dawn it's so atmospheric.

Duvetdazed · 25/08/2019 22:59

Dartmoor, Devon, Cornwall. All stunning.

You can't go wrong in the Yorkshire Dales, plenty to see in the local area - particularly around Swaledale.
Also, and I admit to some bias here, the Western Highlands of Scotland. Or central Scotland, around Pitlochry and Dunkeld? It's beautiful there.

PS, lovely thread OP! I'd love to hear some updates on where you've been.

Not now, but when the poppies are out. Near Polly Joke beach.

cannycat20 · 25/08/2019 23:48

Well done you - my camera really helps me with the whole anxiety thing. We love to visit NT and English Heritage properties and I love practising with my camera; one of the things I love doing is finding the unusual everyday - so, a spider's web in the garden; an unsuspecting snail halfway up the apple tree; butterflies and birds on flowers (have to be fast for those though!). When we go away (not often due to aforesaid anxiety), I love to find lovely local flowers or wildlife to photograph. I love landscapes too - pretty much anywhere in Scotland, Northumberland, much of the West Country (out of season....) - another vote for the Minack. The story of how it came to be is pretty interesting too! And some of the gardens down there are so beautiful it's hard to believe you're still in the British Isles!

@Kez200, I don’t know the way to Polly Joke was pretty stunning this week - although I’m not the best photographer.

I have travelled extensively all over the world. Today I went to Blaen y Glyn waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons and it was the beautiful place I have ever been.

Wow, sorry I disappeared, I certainly didn't mean to - but nice weather and was coming back from staying with family today. What a lovely thread and range of places! There are enough to keep me on the road for several trips. I shall have to put them in a nice list by region.

Some of them I have been too and agree - like Kynance cove which is stunning and one of them I live minutes away from! There are plenty I've never heard of or always meant to visit and never got round to.

Also, will reply to questions and anything else tomorrow when more awake. But forgot to say yes and thank you for the supportive comments about why I am doing this and dealing with anxiety.

This thread is great! Smashing photos, thank you for starting it, WomanInTheWindow.

I am looking forwards to seeing yours in due course.

My suggestion is the Cotswolds. Bourton for ridiculous prettiness. Selsley Common for the views.

Skyejuly · 26/08/2019 23:31

Plokton
Skye
Suffolk

RainingFrogsAndHats · 27/08/2019 00:18

I love Derbyshire (practically all of the Peak District, in fact) and Yorkshire.

The Cotswolds are pretty.

But you can get lovely shots in cities too. Some beautiful architecture in parts of London or Oxford or Bath or York.

What makes a good photo in any case? As a PP says, it could be of a spider's web!

Biologyquestion · 27/08/2019 05:13

From my hols this year, Burgh Island in Devon, and Southwold and Aldeburgh, both in Suffolk Smile.

I loved the Antrim coast, the three bridges at South Queensferry and Argyll.

kaytee87 · 27/08/2019 07:24

Glencoe is God's own country. Breathtaking beauty.
