Restaurant in Edinburgh

We are having a very short city break in Edinburgh in October (I know it's ages away- I'm nothing if not organised!)
I haven't been to Edinburgh for about 25 years and DH and DC have never been. I'm sorted for how to fill our days but I could do with a recommendation for a restaurant for the evening. I really want to avoid the chain places but we don't have a huge budget. Quality, local food, moderately priced, nice setting and central would be amazing. Any recommendations?

This thread comes up at least once per month. A quick search will yield extensive results for you.

There are hundreds of restaurants like that in Edinburgh, it is very easy to avoid the chains. search on here and filter by 'hitlisted' for the best ones.

Thank you for replying.
I was hoping for a personal recommendation from someone!

The Doric near Waverley station, or the Guildford Arms just off Princes Street. Neither are dead cheap, but not too expensive either, and lovely food. Been to both many times when in Edinburgh for festival.

Scran and Scallie is fab - a little way out of the centre - we walked (downhill) there and took an Uber back. Badger and Co very central and good. Wildfire used to be very good although I haven’t been in a few years. Have a fabulous trip - I love Edinburgh

The Walnut - top of Leith Walk. Stockbridge has several excellent restaurants. Really depends where you are staying.

Fishers in the city?

A few years ago I had the best meal ever at Dubh Prais on the Royal Mile. Tiny little unassuming restaurant, feels like someone's dining room but the Scottish inspired food is incredible!

Alliumlove · 23/08/2019 18:47

We had an amazing and very cheap lunch at The Rabbit Hole in Marchmont recently.

plunkplunkfizz · 23/08/2019 18:47

Civerino’s Slice for pizza, The Outsider for upper mid range food, 21212 for fancy. A trip to IJ Mellis to buy some cheese and eat it al fresco if nice weather.

Smellslikebiscuits · 23/08/2019 18:48

We really enjoyed Makars Gourmet Mash bar!

purplecorkheart · 23/08/2019 18:51

I love Petite Paris restaurant in the Grassmarket. It has been a while since I was there but hoping to get back there soon. There are some great places in Leith but they can be pricy.

museumum · 23/08/2019 18:55

The outsider on George IV bridge. Next to elephant house cafe (Harry potter fans go there cause jk Rowling used to write there).

MouseBatMummy · 23/08/2019 18:57

Another vote for scran and scallie - when we visited Edinburgh last month we had a fantastic meal there. Informal but top notch dining

Treem · 23/08/2019 19:03

If you like seafood the mussel inn is excellent but you will have to book. There is also a tapas place on George street which is amazing but the name escapes me. It has 2 floors.

purplecorkheart · 23/08/2019 19:06

I forgot about the Mussel Inn, its fab. The bread alone is worth going for. I love the leek sauce. Must go back to Edinburgh soon.

hellenbackagen · 23/08/2019 19:09

Watching .

we went to Petit Paris on our first weekend in Edinburgh with our then small DD. I ordered rabbit, she had pasta. Dishes arrived and suddenly she was demolishing my rabbit and I was having to eat the pasta... since then we've had a soft spot for Petit Paris and ate at both branches (Grassmarket and Queensferry)

The last time we were in Edinburgh (just DH and I) we ate at l'escargot blanc - delicious meal (they do an early evening offer too) - on arrival we realised it was in the same building that Petit Paris had been in on our first non rabbit eating evening - I think we were meant to be there!

Both PP and l'escargot I'd definitely recommend (if you like French food!)

AmIAWeed · 23/08/2019 19:11

Contini cannonball is fab - right next to the castle, we book each year we go, just be sure to book far enough in advance. For lunch you can't beat Oink on the grassmarket

Treem · 23/08/2019 19:12

Cafe andaluz is the tapas place

RupertTheBear · 23/08/2019 19:33

So many suggestions- that's brilliant thank you all.

Smoke Stack in Broughton Street is amazing. Really reasonably priced and lots of choice

AbbieLexie · 23/08/2019 19:37

Meat feast at Fazenda on George Street but book!
