UTI - does it needs seeing tonight ?

anonnn · 19/08/2019 21:21

I’ve had 4 or 5 UTIs (proven) in the last two months , admitted to urology ward last weekend for monitoring for a few hours, scan , bloods and pain relief as they were concerned it was a systemic infection (HR and BP were too high) . Discharged home about half eleven at night with dihydrocodeine and antibiotics but told to come back if worse .

When I got home the GP told me to stop the antibiotics they’d asked me to start taking in hospital as she wanted proof I had a UTI first - not taking the hospital’s word for it ... On Friday ,they asked for a sample - no one has phoned me since so I’m assuming that was totally normal .

I’m back to severe pain tonight and burning after peeing , usual warning signs of an infection .

I have a very long term history of bladder problems with probably upwards of 50-70 infections since I was a toddler, have had surgery before, waiting on more and there’s reasons why I get so many infections - but the waiting list for help is about three years long, despite them saying it’s an urgent problem now .

I’m worried GP thinks I’m making a fuss over nothing , but I’m starting to get dreadfully sore again tonight and don’t want to spend another night like this . Should I ring 111 (who I know will want me down at local casualty) or just treat with cystitis sachets tonight and try see someone tomorrow ?

Have you tried D Mannose. Look at the sweetcures website (assuming you're in the UK)?

Chillisauceboss · 19/08/2019 21:28

Go back to hospital- who cares if GP thinks you're making a fuss (they probably aren't and see so many people every day)

MidnightMystery · 19/08/2019 21:39

Go back to hospital because clearly you are in pain and this needs to be sorted. If you have a problem that needs sorting then you have every right to get taken care of !

I currently have my first UTI which is pretty horrific. I waited to long to ring the GP tried getting on with the sachets. It's not helped and when I'd finished the course of antibiotics it hasn't cleared up at all. Iv found some penicillin and am taking them and have ordered more antibiotics online which will arrive tomorrow. I will take a sample in to my GP tomorrow but am feeling pretty sorry for myself at the mo.

quitefranklyivehadenough · 19/08/2019 22:37

Please go back tonight. I'm amazed at your GP stopping hospital prescribed antibiotics!!
I now have 40% kidney function as a result of mismanaged UTI's and it's never going to get better. Not trying to scare you but please get help xx

anonnn · 20/08/2019 00:06

quitefrankly so am I ... quite annoyed with the whole situation to be honest , I suspect even if I phone tomorrow won’t get anywhere . The worst thing by far is the pain , hospital were going to give me morphine it was that bad last week . GP just says take naproxen but then on the pack says don’t take with kidney infections etc ... frustrating doesn’t cover it . I don’t think they believe me until I present with haematuria and a NEWS score - as has had to be case 2 or 4 times now - and then they listen ...

The urology team were very good though , the registrar was very informed about things and understood .

Mucky Flowers for you , definitely take a sample to GP tomorrow , but explain you've taken some penicillin as that can change it a bit too .

Will definitely look into d-mannose too and see if that helps .

I’m lying in bed atm as pain has calmed slightly with two 30/500 codeine things and a pint of water - if comes back will ring 111, if not will phone GP at 8, their favourite game is to see ask me to phone chemist first (who won’t deal with it) then see a nurse first for triage before you can access a Gp as they say UTI is a minor OTC illness ...

Out of hours gp for some strong oral antibiotics. If feeling worse go to hospital.

Dowser · 20/08/2019 00:23

Have you tried taking sodium bicarbonate
My dil has one working kidney and the other is very small
She takes bicarbonate tablets to manage her problems

Dowser · 20/08/2019 00:24

Dmannose only works if you have ecoli
I rarely get ecoli so I don’t take it

Dowser · 20/08/2019 00:31

There’s a lot of people turning to phage therapy
Personally I haven’t but you can search fb. Clinic is in Georgia, Tbilisi I believe
I manage mine with a variety of things..haven’t had Antibiotics for over 8 years

Namenic · 20/08/2019 07:03

Don’t take sodium bicarbonate. Please see a urologist

Namenic · 20/08/2019 07:11

Sodium bicarbonate should only be prescribed in specific cases by a kidney specialist as it can have side effects

AnnaMariaDreams · 20/08/2019 07:47

www.chronicutiinfo.com/
Try and get referred to a specialist in chronic and recurrent UTIs. You may need longer term antibiotics or prophylactic treatment eg Hiprex.
Flowers Hope you feel better soon

Yogagirl123 · 20/08/2019 07:55

Every sympathy OP.

I have MS and suffer with UTI very regularly, my MS nurse specialist, recommended D-mannose powder, it has helped me so much, I take a scoop in water twice a day.

Not had an infection since last Oct. you can buy it on amazon etc.

It doesn’t taste of anything, it’s a fruit sugar I think, that the bugs cling onto in your bladder and flush through as you wee.

Been a game changer for me, when I last saw Urologist he was amazed and said what’s different? I explained about d-mannose, he said it great stuff when it works, but if doesn’t work for everyone.

But got to be worth a try. I hope you feel much better soon.

MrsBertBibby · 20/08/2019 08:03

I just had a UTI, the GP bit my head off (nicely) for waiting for it to go and messing about with sachets.

Your GP sounds like an arse. Stick to what Urology tell you to do. They are the experts.

inwood · 20/08/2019 09:01

@Mucky1 that is a ridiculous thing to do. You have no idea what anti b you need.

nooddsocksforme · 20/08/2019 09:08

If you have an uncomplicated uti - I.e. no back pain, high temp , blood on urine, you can see a pharmacist who can prescribe eantibiotics (

stucknoue · 20/08/2019 09:31

Dd has this last year, it took 6 weeks of 2 strong antibiotics to kill the infection. They can be very resistant to treatment now

DeathMetalMum · 20/08/2019 09:36

Yes @Mucky1 penicillin is not normally the first choice antibiotic for UTI there are at least two or three others that would be used.

Also most pharmacists can not prescribe anti-biotics. Some may also be independent perscribers which allow them to prescribe some medication but on the whole most can't prescribe.

Ok do you still have the original anti-biotics the hospital gave you? I'd probably re-start taking them and try and contact someone you saw at the Hospital as the GP seems to think a different plan in regards to treatment is what's needed.

Mucky1 · 20/08/2019 09:36

There's a new system where you can fill in a form and receive them. I'm not a total idiot. It's through Superdrug.

Dowser · 20/08/2019 10:18

Namenic
My doctor told me to take sodium bicarbonate
I’ve been taking it for 40 years...I’m still here
My kidneys are good.

anonnn · 20/08/2019 10:29

Pharmacist won’t help unfortunately as I use intermittent catheters and because of history of kidney infections as well , frustratingly .

Phoned GP surgery who have said hang on til 2pm, they will try and check the results of the sample from Thursday/Friday and see what they will do . Not very happy . I’m tempted to phone the urology secretary and ask her if she knows what’s happening for surgery .

OP posts:
anonnn · 20/08/2019 10:38

I’ve rung urology secretary and she says still looking at it being done in July 2021 . She’s advised I phone urology nurses which I’ve done , left a message asking to phone me back .

Will definitely try d mannose, anything is worth a go yeah .

I saw a great internet site on uti’s
Everything was listed there
I’ll have to give my head a shake and see if I can remember where it was
