That’s just an idea of a think tank not a plan.

I don’t think that is likely to be acceptable to voters so the government will need to work out other ways of supporting the aging population.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2019 12:30

The age will, for sure, go up. Just a question of when.

I fully expect to be working until I drop dead or medically retired the way things are going anyway.

AngelasAshes · 18/08/2019 12:34

Tories tried that before but when it was pointed out that 75 exceeds the life expectancy for huge chunks of the U.K., it was squashed.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 18/08/2019 12:38
  1. Im not sure why this is a surprise to anyone. The age will continue to rise- ageing population, not enough in the pot to pay for everyone.

  2. you’d be foolish to think there’ll even be a state pension by the time you retire if you’re under 40. Make other plans. The state will be little use to anyone in less time than you think.

ghostofharrenhal · 18/08/2019 12:40

Would be a vote loser for sure - remember what happened when they proposed making elderly people pay for social care out of the equity in their homes? Lasted about a day before they dropped it.

They are just testing the water, I think.

averylongtimeago · 18/08/2019 12:41

It just softening everyone up so that when they only raise it to 73 the plebs will feel grateful.

Ian Duncan Smith and his Tory cronies don't give a flying fuck about ordinary working people- it would please them immensely if we all had to work (on the lowest wage possible) until we drop dead. Win win - no pensions to pay plus no old people clogging up the hospitals.

Lucafritz · 18/08/2019 12:41

Im 26 and last time i checked in January i don't get my state pension till 77! Check your pensions its probably the same

ghostofharrenhal · 18/08/2019 12:42

Lucafritz can't be right - the current age for people in their 20s is 68.

BogglesGoggles · 18/08/2019 12:44

Good. People should support themselves for as long as possible. I fully expect people of my generation to be working until at least 75.

megletthesecond · 18/08/2019 12:44

I assumed it would go up. I was planning for 70 (I'm currently 45).

They're probably only currently planning for 72/73.

ghostofharrenhal · 18/08/2019 12:45

How old are you at the moment Boggles?

Rachelover40 · 18/08/2019 12:45

Flipping heck! That is outrageous. I am so thankful I got my pensions at sixty - but 65 would have been alright too.

It is ridiculous, we all know people are living longer and are generally 'younger' for their ages than there were years ago but, still, plenty of people in their sixties and seventies have chronic health problems.

Ylvamoon · 18/08/2019 12:46

I don't think there is "retirement" for my generation in the classic way (I am in my late 30's). Maybe it's possible if you have a younger partner (DH is 14 years older....) or earn & save lots of money. Sadly, I don't believe in currently available pension schemes ... very low value returnan Maybe it will pay for a 2 week holiday of a lifetime when I am 67....
So yep, I will work until I drop! Just not sure who will employ a slow, tatty and slightly dement 70+ year old granny.

CoughSplutter · 18/08/2019 12:46

Lucafritz

“Im 26 and last time i checked in January i don't get my state pension till 77! Check your pensions its probably the same”

Fake news - this absolutely is not true.

Didiusfalco · 18/08/2019 12:49

Someone pointed out on another thread yesterday that historically retirement is a relatively new concept. I suspect it will probably end up being shortlived. However the government/society need to work to combat age discrimination in the workplace and increase flexibility/part time options for older workers.

midsomermurderess · 18/08/2019 12:51

Oh don't start with the 'fake news' shite here/

ghostofharrenhal · 18/08/2019 12:52

However the government/society need to work to combat age discrimination in the workplace and increase flexibility/part time options for older workers.

Exactly. Many people are forced out of work in their 50s as employers want younger, cheaper workers.

If they do increase the SR age to 75, then the benefits bill will go anyway up as more people will need to claim JSA/ESA.

jeanne16 · 18/08/2019 12:53

This is the Mirror so presumably it is a Tory bashing article.

Tonnerre · 18/08/2019 12:54

Johnson's going to have to find the money for his Brexit folly somehow, this is one way, I suppose.

Cwenthryth · 18/08/2019 12:55

Also v sceptical about a current prediction of 77 for anybody! Was that from here

www.gov.uk/state-pension-age

I’m 36 and just checked mine is currently 68. So just over half way there Grin

KUGA · 18/08/2019 12:56

Its not fake new I read it myself in the Daily Mail this morning.
If the government stopped sending so much money abroad they could look after the indigenous of this country.
It`s fine for them as they earn a damn fortune .
They waste more than most of us earn.

ghostofharrenhal · 18/08/2019 12:56

jeanne16 it is in all the papers, including the Daily Hate Mail.
