What misconceptions do people have about you?

I have been told in several different scenarios (work; home; school) that I am very 'laid back'.

I am actually a total stress head with diagnosed anxiety and depression. So it is bizarre to me that i apparently have this back persona.

I am pleased that I come across this way.... but it seems wierd.

People initially think I’m stuck up (or so I’ve been told) because I am reserved. I am actually quite shy and don’t really know what to say when I’m talking to people I don’t know.

choosingchilli · 17/08/2019 19:28

I can come across as aloof but like minai I'm quite shy until I get to know people.

notacooldad · 17/08/2019 19:31

  2. I am from down South ( I'm Northern
3 I'm posh ( am I heck as like!!)

  • I’m outgoing and confident - I’m actually an introvert forced by circs to be extroverted
  • I’m even tempered - I’m not but I feel the need to play nice at work, assumed most people did
  • I have it all sussed Motherhood wise - do i heck?
  • I’m Scottish/ Welsh/ Irish - I’m rural very northern with welsh relations and have lived in the SE for a long time. It has produced a fecked up accent
OhDear2200 · 17/08/2019 19:44

People think I’m very straight and serious.....until I get drunk with them.

I’m not but I take time to trust people to show the ‘real’ me. I have a
Very dry, sarcastic sense of humour and can fly close to The decency line so don’t show it until I know that someone is of the similar humour.

I’ve had people who I’ve known for a couple of years say that they got me very wrong.

OhDear2200 · 17/08/2019 19:45

Oh also people think my kids are really well behaved 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

LifeIsGoodish · 17/08/2019 20:34

That I'm cheerful, confident and musical.

🤣🤣🤣

(Or maybe that should be 😕😳🤐)

Frith2013 · 17/08/2019 20:36

I had my children quite young and have been a single parent for 15 years.

I am not interested in my appearance so probably look quite scruffy to people who care about things like that.

I have a sneaking suspicion that most people assume I’m quite thick.

Stardustmoon · 17/08/2019 20:37

That I'm always happy. I smile a lot and put up a cheery front but I'm often feeling the opposite. I'm always the listener too and I think people have the misconception that I don't need to talk.

Schwibble · 17/08/2019 20:39

That I have a perfect marriage.
That we have at least six holidays a year.
That I am confident and happy go lucky.
That I because I currently don't work I have plenty of free time.
That I am a flirt and/or maneater.

Craftycorvid · 17/08/2019 20:42

That I’m rather middle class with a naice background (working class and left school with no qualifications except trying to fight off packs of semi-feral youths).

Vix20678 · 17/08/2019 20:44

A new friend told me she originally thought I was ‘prim and proper’

Then she got to know me and realised her mistake!

People think I’m very calm and peaceful. I actually suffer from anxiety and have to watch my temper.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/08/2019 20:46

That I'm very organised.
Ha!

furrytoebean · 17/08/2019 20:47

People always think I’m a hugger.

I’m not a hugger.

Bunnybigears · 17/08/2019 20:48

People think I am a pushy parent because my children do a lot of sports and are quite high achieving in a few of them. I am not Inregularly try and persuade them to drop some sports or not enter some competitions because it is so damn expensive and I sometimes get so bored watching them.

People also think I am a lesbian despite me being happily married to a man, but then they also think my DH is gay so I dont know what that says about us!

StormcloakNord · 17/08/2019 20:56

People think I'm an arsehole.

For the most part they're right.

Until they become my pal and then they realise I'm actually a gem.

mistermagpie · 17/08/2019 20:57

People think I'm really outgoing. It's true that I'm very chatty and a bit of an oversharer with people I know, but I actually suffer with terrible social anxiety around strangers. I can barely phone for a takeaway without feeling stressed and one-on-one nteractions (taxis, hairdressers etc) are really difficult.

lljkk · 17/08/2019 20:57

I get a lot of exercise.
So People think I'm fast, strong, coordinated, good at team or ball sports, always was good at sport even as a child, must be very competitive: exact opposite is true on each one. :)

Audreyhelp · 17/08/2019 20:59

People think I am really blunt and say what I think ,and that’s what they like .
Actually I could say a lot more .

bananamonkey · 17/08/2019 21:05

Also that I’m stuck up and unfriendly. I’m just super shy, have little confidence and am socially awkward. I’m a nice person really!

PencilSkirt · 17/08/2019 21:10

I'm the same as you, OP. My apparently calm persona has been mentioned as an asset, but internally I'm always anxious to some extent and over-think most situations. Perhaps I should take up Poker.

Clutterfreeintraining · 17/08/2019 21:16

A lot of people have commented recently that they think I'm really organised and very laid back Shock. Neither of those traits would I ever use to describe myself.
My accent is also a mix of several different influences and confuses many. I had a rather frustrating conversation with someone who was adamant I was English and no amount of protesting on my part would have her believe otherwise.

PsychoSyd · 17/08/2019 21:20

That I'm a nice person. I'm really not.

tigger001 · 17/08/2019 21:25

People think I'm really hard (emotionally)

Sparadrap · 17/08/2019 21:26

People think I’m successful and am good at the whole life thing. I’m not, I’m really really not Confused
