Vegetarians .. what do you order from Indian restaurant

I'm a new vegetarian and before I made the change used to order the most delicious chicken tikka masala from our local Indian restaurant.

I don't know what to choose now! Any suggestions ?

I'm not veggie but usually go for veggie options. I have tarka dal (lentil based) and veg curry.
Most Indians I know will also sell you a portion of the sauce you like without the meat in it.
Lovely over your rice and a bit of home cooked cauliflower, I find.

inwood · 17/08/2019 06:27

Im not veggie but I'd have Tarka dal, veg pakora, sag paneer and possibly a chilli naan.

Indian food is amazing for vegetarians!!! Try anything and everything.

Channa Masala, mushroom bhahji, mushroom rice and daal (thick, extra chillies on the top). Maybe nick a bit of naan bread from my husband to dip into the daal. Lovely.

Most Indian food is vegetarian (actually the meat dishes are usually tasteless rubbish in the UK). I’m not vegetarian anymore but the best Indian dishes are always vegetarian. We usually get a dal, a chana (chickpea) dish and something with paneer. If the have a paneer tikka or some sort of tandoori paneer that’s really nice. Veg biriyani can also be good but paired with something with a bit of protein in it.

whatswithtodaytoday · 17/08/2019 06:36

A veggie version of the curry I want, plus saag aloo or saag paneer. Yum! Vegetarianism is huge in India for religious reasons, any decent Indian restaurant will do a veggie version of whatever you want.

growlingbear · 17/08/2019 06:38

Dahl, sag and naan with bindi bhaji
Or veg biriyani

victopai · 17/08/2019 06:39

Paneer tikka masala is closest

Mrsducky88 · 17/08/2019 06:40

Tarka dal, brinjal bhahji (aubergine), saag aloo, peshwari naan. Yum yum

Salene · 17/08/2019 06:57

I often order paneer tikka masala, or a vegetarian biryani

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 17/08/2019 07:10

Go to Dishoom and order every vegetarian thing on their menu.

AloneLonelyLoner · 17/08/2019 07:11

Mushroom biryani is the bizz!

Traditional Indian food is vegetarian, the meat ones are an addition to suit British culture.

If you are a strict vegetarian though (vegan) then you'll want to ask for food to be made without ghee.

polkadotpixie · 17/08/2019 07:12

Paneer Dhansak is my favourite

AgentCooper · 17/08/2019 07:13

I’m not vegetarian but would take something with paneer over a meat dish any day. Paneer masala, veg pakora, peshwari naan salivates

AngusThermopyle · 17/08/2019 07:41

Have you asked them if they make a vegetable tikka massala,? that's what I have at mine, with a cauliflower bahji dish (instead of rice) and bombay potatoes.

Deathraystare · 17/08/2019 07:42

Indian food is amazing for vegetarians!!! Try anything and everything.

No. Not always. some are very meat heavy and you have to order veggie side dishes as no veggie means.

Not fond of biryani but do love a Dhansak or a Marsala. There is a lovely authentic South Indian veggie restaurant near me and I love the dhosas!

YobaOljazUwaque · 17/08/2019 07:42

I never order "vegetable" anything (tikka/jalfrezi/whatever) as it is completely hit and miss what vegetable you get. I want named vegetable. So I tend to ignore the main courses and order several vegetable side dishes which tend to be of various named vegetables.

Nb while we all know what onion bhaji is like, any other vegetable bhaji is nothing like that but will tend to be a simple spiced curry sauce with that vegetable.

Anything with paneer gets ordered though.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 17/08/2019 07:42

I always just have a selection of sides as they’re sooooo good. I get sag aloo, muttar paneer and vegetable rice 🤤 plain but delicious!

HippyChickMama · 17/08/2019 08:09

Sag paneer, Bombay aloo and a peshwari naan. I'm not vegetarian either but that's my usual order.

KitKat1985 · 17/08/2019 08:14

Can you not get a vegetable tikka masala instead?

P.S. All credit to you planning your take-away order at breakfast time - exactly the sort of thing I would do! Grin

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/08/2019 08:19

Indian is the best for vegetarians.

Paneer tikka masala, tarka daal, chana masala, Bombay potato or the one with peas as well (can’t remember the name) veg samosas. Loads of rice. Or veggie biryani, and always poppadoms. The best takeaway by far.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 17/08/2019 09:10

All the side dishes! Also, most restaurants will do you a paneer tikka masala even if it's not on the menu.

GaraMedouar · 17/08/2019 09:12

I always have sag aloo and onion bhaji. Plus a couple of popadums.

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2019 09:12

I’m not a vegetarian but I often order the veggie options in an Indian restaurant
Paneer anything
Daal
Fish masala (if you eat fish)

PleaseGoogleIt · 17/08/2019 09:15

Pretty much everything that has paneer in it Grin
