Hob burns - do these need dressing?

I'm on holiday, adult DD is at home. She has texted me to say she has burnt her fingers on oven hobs (photo included). Would you bandage the hand or let air to them overnight?

Not a doctor but have experience in a burn unit. The burns look like "second degree" in places because of the blisters. I would tend to recommend they be dressed to protect the blistered areas. They are also probably very painful and a dressing can cushion them. A call to 111 would probably be a good idea and maybe A&E. If it was only one finger it might be easier to cope with but it is quite extensive.

Are those fingers blistered? She need to go to A&E with that.

Get that ring off and I’d say a and e or a 24 hr minor injuries unit (preferably the latter) as they’ll have those Vaseline type impregnated dressings

First aid courses always say burns the size of a 50p piece need to be seen so I think those need to be seen by A&E. Don't underestimate burns.
And definitely take the ring off.

Thank you for these replies. If I'd been there with her I'd probably have suggested A&E but wasn't sure if it serious enough to warrant it? She has had some codeine but she said it's had no effect 😞 I've advised her to bandage it up. Thank you

I didn't want to be overly dramatic, but I agree with the posters saying A&E. The blisters create a risk of infection.

Definitely A&E with those. The pain must be incredible! They can apply a hypocoloid dressing which will aid healing and reduce scarring.

I'm not sure your advice is the best, OP. She needs proper medical treatment and sterile dressings and the place for that is A&E. She'll be in a lot of pain soon and infection is a big risk.

Mumsnet never ceases to amaze me.

Thank you again to the people who have responded with medical advice to my question. I have relayed it back to my DD and she is arranging for a friend to take her to a & e, hopefully it should be relatively quiet at this time of night.

@JuniperBeer Yes I'm not quite sure what all that was about. I didn't realise we have to stop caring about our children once they have their 18th birthday - or that they don't need their mum's support and sympathy after the age of 18 🙄

@CilantroChili sometimes, no matter what our age, we just need our mum, you have no idea about the Ops daughter, maybe she's going through a tough time, maybe she's home alone and doesn't have a partner or friend to phone, or maybe she feels in pain and just wants her mum!

Gallons of cold water for at least 30 minutes & wrap in cling film, take ibuprofen & if there is further blistering or if the pain becomes unmanageable then either minor injuries or A & E. Take all jewellery off while you can get it off. I poured a kettle full of boiling water over my hand while trying to fill a hot water bottle, it was more painful than anything I have ever known, don't use any creams, they hold in the heat, if you have to use anything, Aloe Vera gel, I used the Banana Boat after sun Aloe gel, it took a good week before I could use my hand again.

@QOD Thanks for asking. She didn't end up going to A&E in the night, for numerous reasons.

This morning she has phoned the walk in at the branch of Boots in our city centre, they wouldn't treat her (?) So she phoned 111 who said to go to A&E. She did but they sent her to their walk-in centre! So that's where she is now, still waiting to be seen, she's been there for about 2 hours now so hopefully will be seen soon.

On a separate issue - she told me she'd been harassed by a man when she first got there 😡 He was circling and smirking at her, than sat right next to her, she could feel his breath on her. He tried shaking her hand 😡asked her her name, said he'd get her a drink, then got up and said 'wait there, I'll be back in a minute'. Luckily at the moment she got called through to go and sit in a different area. Seems you're not even safe from unwanted attention even in a walk-in centre waiting room.

Now the walk in centre that she's been sent to from A&E has told her they can't treat it as it's blistered, so she has to go back to A&E 🤦🏼‍♀️

Scrap that, I'm getting confused with all my DD's texts, she's still at the walk-in centre

They've sent her home with some cream. They haven't bandaged it as they said the blisters aren't open??

Crazy. I poured hot fat down the back of my hand and had a long blister - didn’t pop ever I don’t think but walk in put this amazing dressing on that I swear absorbed the pain
