Help - son’s boil has popped

Flower777 · 13/08/2019 16:50

Help please

My son was having a shower - he is 11.

He mentioned something on his leg near groin.

It’s a small hole in his leg.

I think it must have been a boil which has burst?!

He says that it has been sore in that area for a few days.

I’m a bit alarmed by the hole - it’s the size of a pin head I guess.

Will it heal on its own or should we get it checked out?

Area around it is not red at all so doesn’t look like there is infection.

So many thanks for any help

Just sounds like a normal thing.
Just tell him to check it after a few hours and keep it clean

Bwekfusth · 13/08/2019 17:24

It'll be fine, bit of savlon or sudocrem.

Horehound · 13/08/2019 17:25

A pin head? Bloody hell calm down.

Just keep an eye out for a bullseye rash in case it was a tick that’s fallen off.

Fresh air, or some cream.

If yiur really that bothered a blister plaster will speed healing but it should be ok on it's own

As in a sewing pin, or a drawing pin?

Flower777 · 13/08/2019 17:31

A sewing pin

I haven’t seen this before so I’m concerned.

If people don’t have anything helpful to say then please feel free to leave the thread.

I’ve put some savlon on it.

Thanks for the comments - I’ll leave it for tonight and check in the morning.

Hi, clean it and put on an elastoplast to cover. Keep eye on it and any redness/ swelling then see your GP. Should settle by the morning

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/08/2019 17:55

Size of a pin head is a spot, not a boil.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/08/2019 17:56

I’d put some antiseptic on it and try to keep it dry as possible. If it’s not swollen/bleeding/sore then it’s probably just a boil or pimple. Was there a spot there before?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/08/2019 18:01

I had a huge lump on my shoulder for years that I had almost forgot I had. About the size of a pea. One day it just erupted (imagine giving a toothpaste tube a good squeeze) and I have a little hole there now.

Flower777 · 13/08/2019 18:11

Thanks all.

I don't know what was there before - he only mentioned it once it had become a hole in his leg! But he says that it has been sore/painful for about 5 days so that's why I am assuming a boil.

It's not swollen or bleeding currently.

I've just not used to seeing the inside of my son's leg like this!

Maybe pin heads can be different sizes? I mean those ones with a yellow plastic pinhead.

I have never had a spot that erupted and left a big crater like this.

How my request isn’t too weird, but how about a pic?

You say you’re worried but a pin head does just sound like a spot. Not something most people would worry about.

MrMeSeeks · 13/08/2019 18:16

Put savlin or germalene on it, it’s not really very big. If it bothers him put a plaster on during the day to stop clothes rubbing on it and let it breathe at night.

youarenotkiddingme · 13/08/2019 18:19

If it's bigger than a few mm in diameter it probably was a boil or possibly a tick as mentioned above.
Definitely watch for redness spreading.

The good thing about it being open means any foreign bodies should drain out. But open wounds can also be a breeding ground and great home for bacteria. I would have him in cotton shorts or trousers as denim or fluffy clothes could aggravate it or get wool fibres in it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/08/2019 18:22

Mine blew like Krakatoa! I’ve never seen anything like it. The hole is maybe 2mm across and this was a few years ago now.

Drinkandknowthings · 13/08/2019 18:33

Lordprof my mum had the same thing but on her temple. The doctor had said it was a blocked blackhead and one day I met her for lunch and it had exploded!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/08/2019 19:11

Your poor mum!

Drinkandknowthings · 13/08/2019 20:28

She never felt anything! There was just this big hole in her head! It’s just a tiny blackhead now.

LolaLollypop · 13/08/2019 20:31

I had this exact same thing whilst in Thailand. It was an infection in my leg. FYI I also got a secondary absess that was much bigger and had to be trained in hospital so keep an eye out for any other red lumps.
It really does leave a noticeable hole in your leg! I kept mine clean and it healed pretty quickly.

incogKNEEto · 13/08/2019 21:05

I think OP means this kind of pin, which is a larger 'crater' than most posters are imagining!

I would put sacking on it OP and keep an eye on it for any redness.

Savlon not sacking Grin

Sapphire387 · 13/08/2019 22:15

If it’s still looking open tomorrow then get some magnesium sulfate paste from the chemist - it’s a ‘drawing’ paste that pulls gunk out of wounds. Recommended to me by a nurse when I had a nasty ingrown hair once. It’s good stuff. You leave it on for twenty four hours covered with a dressing.
