Sorry if there is already a post on this- I can't see one- but why are the media being so lax in their reporting of the London teen missing in Malaysia? Please no comments about how she's not 3, blonde and the child of doctors.... I'm not interested in McCann bashing. Just interested in why they're not reporting widely on it? It hasn't even been on the front page of BBC news online or a headline since it happened

I was just thinking this. I haven't even seen anyone say anything on any social media.

FuckAPotNoodle · 07/08/2019 19:18

I’ve read updates on the bbc most days, and seen it covered on most mainstream news sites

Unshriven · 07/08/2019 19:20

It does seem very quiet.

The family are certain she would not have wandered off.

They must be beside themselves. I hope some people are looking for her.

Poor child.

kitk · 07/08/2019 19:21

@FuckAPotNoodle I've seen stuff if I've gone looking for it, but it's not obvious, although I don't live in London so don't get a lot of London news stories on my feed, but this is surely national interest? It brought it home last night that DH has had an awful few days in work doing 18 hour days and had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned her, then didn't believe me when it wasn't on news at 10

I agree. I also believe the parents 100% when they say she wouldn’t run away or go out on her own. The Malaysian government very quickly dismissed kidnapping initially and said she had wondered off which might have delayed media attention.

SaintEyning · 07/08/2019 19:27

It’s scandalous and I think it’s because she was not travelling on a British passport. I know her parents - they have lived in London since the late 90s, her mum is from NI (we’re allowed both British and Irish passports) and I also think her SEND is a reason. Nóra is a vulnerable child and this is totally out of character for her to just leave her siblings and parents and wander off. The Irish and French governments are working hard but because she wasn’t travelling on a UK passport, the London media are skimming over it. The child was born and has lived in london her whole life!

cherryblossomgin · 07/08/2019 19:31

Its sad, she isn't trending on twitter either.

kitk · 07/08/2019 19:34

@SaintEyning I'm sure they won't mind what a stranger off Mumsnet thinks, but I wonder if you'd communicate that I'm thinking of her 24/7. It's just awful! It hadn't occurred to me that the passport nationality might be the reason. It had occurred that her SEND made her less reportable which is so absolutely shit Sad

I look for updates a few times a day.

Just how does someone vanish off the face of the earth?

I have a child with learning disabilities.

I can’t begin to understand how the family feel.

AgileLass · 07/08/2019 19:38

It’s been the top story on the Irish news channels

Unshriven · 07/08/2019 19:38

The Irish passport is definitely a thing.

The Daily Mail mentions it at every opportunity.

The BBC can't decide what nationality she is.
The poor child is out there alone as far as the English are concerned.

The Irish, French, and missing persons charities are all over it though.

FuckAPotNoodle · 07/08/2019 19:39

It could be a mix of the Irish/French connection not making it seem as pertinent to some people. Plus it happened abroad and her immediate family do not seem to be giving media interviews, which has an impact.

However, this is a vicious circle - the media go cool on a story if their audience don’t engage with it. It’s a numbers game, which is heartbreaking for the family, but how it works after the initial story goes live.

For what it’s worth it is on the home page for UK news on my BBC app set up.

Soola · 07/08/2019 19:40

The Daily Mail has been updating with the latest news.

ChicCroissant · 07/08/2019 19:40

There have been other threads on this and this unfortunate case has been widely covered in the media.

I’m not in the Uk but thank you for the information.

Sunshine1239 · 07/08/2019 19:44

I also think it’s a passport thing and also Malaysia isn’t your typical holiday resort down the road. The place they were was very isolated even for Malaysia. There’s prob no news crews anywhere near it

Soola · 07/08/2019 19:45

Fuma · 07/08/2019 19:45

I've heard about this poor child on every half hour headline update throughout the day while listening to the radio. I rarely purposely listen to/watch the news but I have definitely heard about her.

Thoughts are with her parents. These events are always horrendous but trying to navigate your way in an unfamiliar country in this circumstance must be somehow worse.

LadyLuna16 · 07/08/2019 19:49

I think it’s been covered. I have a daughter with learning disabilities and this is really hitting home for me and DH. My daughter would also have no idea what to do in an unusual situation. Her family’s statements are heartbreaking.

But I agree that the family are being made out to be ‘foreighn’ somehow.

fblake · 07/08/2019 19:52

Poor family must be beside themselves. I hope and pray they find her safe and well .

Fuma · 07/08/2019 19:53

I honestly didn't know she had an Irish passport until I read it on this thread. Admittedly I haven't heard a full news report but it hasn't been mentioned in the half hourly headlines.

ChicCroissant · 07/08/2019 19:54

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-london-49271096/nora-quoirin-missing-girl-s-aunt-makes-emotional-appeal

Appeal made a couple of hours ago, and if you scroll down the page there appear to have been daily articles about it.

coconuttelegraph · 07/08/2019 19:57

I've heard about this from many places, online news sites, radio and TV, there was a spokesperson for the family on earlier.

I cant think of a case to compare it to so can't judge the level of coverage, can anyone think of one?
