Missing Nora

Sorry if there is already a post on this- I can't see one- but why are the media being so lax in their reporting of the London teen missing in Malaysia? Please no comments about how she's not 3, blonde and the child of doctors.... I'm not interested in McCann bashing. Just interested in why they're not reporting widely on it? It hasn't even been on the front page of BBC news online or a headline since it happened

MuseumGardens · 07/08/2019 23:19

I'm in the South East and it's been.on TV news

MuseumGardens · 07/08/2019 23:21

There was a longish TV news article about it earlier. Showing where the family were staying in the resort in the former rubber plantation and saying fingerprints had been found. On a window sill I think

Fuma · 07/08/2019 23:30

Aunt's appeal on the front page of BBC news as it has been all evening. Not sure what your point is op.

littlebird88 · 07/08/2019 23:35

ive seen it exptensivly and im on scotland.
i think its because there is no uodate really.

MuseumGardens · 07/08/2019 23:37

The second most watched video on the BBC News site is
"Missing girl's aunt makes emotional appeal for help"

kitk · 07/08/2019 23:52

@Fuma my point is that apart from the day she went missing, I haven't seen any coverage on the main news bulletins or on the main page of say, bbc news. The only way to see any updates is to google. I've said downpost that I'm not in London so wonder of this alters my news view but my opinion is this story is of (inter)national interest, so shouldn't only be front page news in London, Belfast or France

PolkaDotted · 08/08/2019 00:09

I'm in Scotland and i saw it on the front page of the BBC news site the day it was reported and two days after. This morning it wasn't on the home page but when I clicked on World news it was there on the front page. Now the link to Nora's aunt's appeal is on the front page.

unfortunateevents · 08/08/2019 00:15

I feel I have seen lots of coverage of this story so I don't agree with the OP that the disappearance isn't being covered. I've also heard her name on various news bulletins (being pronounced in a couple of different ways, which is why I remember). I'm not sure I agree that her SEND means the story is not being covered as some people seem to suggest, I think her developmental needs have actually been ignored in favour of concentrating on the fact that she is 15 and people are more likely to think she has wandered off. It feels like her family have really had to emphasise her SEND in order to get the authorities to understand that she isn't just an average teen who has gone wandering.

The unidentified fingerprints which the police are apparently working on is a mystery though. This area may be remote but they are staying in a tourist resort, surely there are going to be loads of fingerprints from various cleaners and staff (some of whom may not even work there anymore) and also prints from all the people who have stayed there recently?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/08/2019 08:33

It's all over the news where I am and I'm in the Midlands. They're literally discussing right now that they're now going to play her parents voice recordings across the forest in the hope that it helps her if she's lost.

Where are you that it's not being covered unless you google?

ClashCityRocker · 08/08/2019 08:45

I'm in Yorkshire and have seen it on the news... Although more so yesterday. I think, sadly, that the authorities insistence that 'she' s just wandered off' has meant that any initial impetus has been lost.

Also seen the stories on the missing Vietnamese girl (unsurprisingly, as its quite local).

I do hope both are found safe and well. It is both fascinating and depressing as to what stories gain traction.

ChicCroissant · 08/08/2019 08:51

I don't know how you can not see the news articles as they are on the front page of the BBC news site, not only the London section OP.

I had not, however, heard of the Vietnamese girl missing and I hope she is found safe and well very soon.

MyOtherProfile · 08/08/2019 08:53

I feel I have seen lots of coverage of this story so I don't agree with the OP that the disappearance isn't being covered.

Same here and not in London. I wonder if OP just posted this to raise the profile on MN.

RightOnTheEdge · 08/08/2019 09:24

I am in North Yorkshire not far from York.
I heard customers at work yesterday talking about Nora and blaming the parents. They were saying they didn't believe the Mother's story because why would she not be sleeping with her parents if she has learning difficulties?
Which I found really mean Sad
But the story is out there and people are talking about it.

I hadn't heard anything about the missing Vietnamese girl who is missing though until this thread. When I Googled her I also saw the story of two other Vietnamese girls who had gone missing in York last month.

They were thankfully found at two different addresses but a man has been arrested on modern day slavery charges.
It's horrific and also a reminder that these things are going on around us while I obliviously go about my life.

I really hope Nora and Linh Le are found safe my heart goes out to their families.

Magicpaintbrush · 08/08/2019 10:06

kitk - yes I'm in the Southeast. I look at the main BBC news web pages most days and there has been updates daily, but it could perhaps be different depending on where you live?

Magicpaintbrush · 08/08/2019 10:09

Here is a link to the update on the BBC website today: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-49275429

If you click on the 'news' tab it's about the 6th story down on the list, hope that helps.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 08/08/2019 10:58

I work for a London-based international news organisation and we’ve done two stories on Nora so far. It certainly feels like a story to us, but if there isn’t any news, you can’t make it up. Like everyone else, I’m hoping desperately that she’s found safe and well - her parents must be beside themselves.

@MyOtherProfile no, I didn't post to raise awareness, though I did find it odd that there were no other posts that I could see on it...

To those telling me how to find the news on her, I know how to get to the London news area on bbc website and other news outlets, but I find it strange it's not on the front news page regardless of where you live as it's a story of national interest. I'd also not heard anything about the Vietnamese girl until another poster referenced it. It's all very sad Sad

OP posts:
ChicCroissant · 08/08/2019 12:00

It is on the front page of BBC news and there have been other threads on here, from people like yourself who don't seem to see it. Not sure why that is.

PolkaDotted · 08/08/2019 12:12

It was on the home page for a few days though and it's there again.

MyOtherProfile · 08/08/2019 12:43

It was on the home page though. They're not going to keep it permanently on the front page because other news comes up too. As horrible as it is, it's just one of many news stories.

SweetPetrichor · 08/08/2019 12:59

I've seen it reported clearly enough on what pops up on my iphone new bit. Honestly, there's not much to say is there...girl gone missing. There's no point having daily updates, just an article if/when she's found.

PolkaDotted · 09/08/2019 21:57

It was on there yesterday. Not in the part with the pics at the top but on the homepage below there was a part about the appeal and a link to it. It's now on the front page of World news about them playing Nora's Mother's voice recordings. I don't think it's feasible to expect it to be constantly on the Homepage when there are few updates and there have been many other major news stories over the past week or so.

PolkaDotted · 09/08/2019 21:57

Wrong thread.

user1483844318 · 10/08/2019 07:55

My overriding concern in this terrible situation is for that poor child. I desperately want her to be found safe and well. But just touching on something 'Rightontheedge' has posted about over hearing comments that people have made about the mother. Without making light of her suffering, we need to bear in mind that had this occured in the UK, it would have been standard procedure to suspect family and relatives first as 99% of these crimes are committed by someone who knows the family. I'm not suggesting that that is what's happened here, but the statistics and procedure are facts. Now, not having any knowledge of Malaysian investigative procedure, nor any real details of the crime, it's far too early to assume anything about anyone.
