Missing Nora

Sorry if there is already a post on this- I can't see one- but why are the media being so lax in their reporting of the London teen missing in Malaysia? Please no comments about how she's not 3, blonde and the child of doctors.... I'm not interested in McCann bashing. Just interested in why they're not reporting widely on it? It hasn't even been on the front page of BBC news online or a headline since it happened

I’m in NI and it has been in the news constantly here (radio/tv/social media). It will be because Nora’s mum is from here though and Nora traveling on an Irish passport.

MsJRMEsq · 07/08/2019 19:58

They've set up on Twitter @findnoraq
The BBC and other news outlets seem to have stopped reporting on it as much, presumably because it's the other side of the world. It's not right, they need to give her much more news space to keep awareness up.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 07/08/2019 19:59

It was also on the front page of one of the newspapers today in a client’s house. A photo of Nóra and her mum. Not sure which paper.

Soola · 07/08/2019 20:17

Here you are, she’s now front page news in the Daily Mail.

Missing Nora

It's on the BBC front page, latest story two hours ago, clicking on that story brings up five other BBC stories about it. Why are people saying that the BBC isn't covering it?

Kevintherootvegetable · 07/08/2019 20:26

I've heard a lot about Nora's disappearance and the investigation on the radio and news apps in Ireland.

ByeByeNarcissist · 07/08/2019 20:33

It's so sad. I think it was also bad timing as there was the story of the student jumping out of the aircraft, the Tate Modern boy, the two US shootings.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/08/2019 20:40

It was in today's times.

W0rriedMum · 07/08/2019 20:41

There is a lot of coverage - BBC, Sky, Daily Mail etc. But it's a hard case to keep at the top of the news feeds because it's far away, the family aren't doing media and are referring inquiries to the Lucy Blackwell Trust, and there is some confusion on whether she is French, Irish or a Londoner.

I am NOT saying that the family should be doing appeals but there is no question that it is effective in keeping the media interest high.

I really feel for the family and hope Nora is being cared for, wherever she is.

Fuma · 07/08/2019 20:43

I'll tell you what isn't being reported though other than in the Northern Echo is that a Vietnamese girl has gone missing in Yorkshire after becoming separated from her tour group.

I can pretty much guarantee that no one outside of Yorkshire has even heard about this.

Fuma · 07/08/2019 20:45

There's a family video appeal on the BBC front page, @W0rriedMum.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 07/08/2019 20:45

I can pretty much guarantee that no one outside of Yorkshire has even heard about this.

I haven’t but i’ll go now and look for a link to share.

RevSeptimusHarding · 07/08/2019 20:47

Well it's on the BBC site today. Perhaps it's simply that there have been no developments.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/08/2019 20:50

Her poor parents. I cAnt and wouldn’t want to imagine what they’re going through.
🙏 for the safe return of the beautiful little girl. Please God don’t let her poor mum and dad go through years of hell and not knowing like poor Kate and Gerry.

IndianaMoleWoman · 07/08/2019 20:56

I think the reporting has heavily implied that she’s just wandered off due to her additional needs until earlier today, when I read a report that unidentified prints had been found in the hotel room. I think that Malaysia is desperate to not be seen as a dangerous place due to the recent explosion in tourism and have massively played it down, which the England-centric British media (and I say that as an English person) have used as an excuse to not really cover it due to her not 100% English background.

IndianaMoleWoman · 07/08/2019 20:57

I hope she is found safe and well soon.

WyfOfBathe · 07/08/2019 21:05

I've seen reporting of it on BBC news website/app without searching it out, and on the radio news today.

Without new updates (family appeals, police statements, etc), media outlets they can't really keep writing new articles, so I imagine it's hard to keep promoting it. Especially when there are other news stories with more recent updates.

WyfOfBathe · 07/08/2019 21:08

It's not right, they need to give her much more news space to keep awareness up.

I really hope she is found safe and well quickly, but I'm not sure that awareness in the British media will help that. People in Britain can't be on the look out for someone presumably in Malaysia.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 07/08/2019 21:11

Hoping she is found safe and well, how awful for the family. I have a DC with ASD who is non verbal, it worries me what would happen if they were to get lost/wander offSad

kitk · 07/08/2019 21:16

I really appreciate people responding to my post... I just think you'd expect daily "still not found" messages from MSM? In her mum's position I couldn't be on the news every day although some can. The Irish passport thing is interesting, as is the fact I need to go looking for updates living outside of London/Ireland/ France. I am relieved that others are seeing coverage but who is to say that my neighbours won't be travelling to Malaysia tomorrow and would benefit from exposure?

a Vietnamese girl has gone missing in Yorkshire after becoming separated from her tour group.

Nora has been on every online news feed I have read, I have not heard about the girl in Yorkshire though.
Hope they are both found soon

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/08/2019 21:34

That's not standard, and it's good practice to check with parents and the police about this type of thing, it could very well be that they don't want that type of coverage.

There is another MN thread about this; but I think coverage has been pretty good. It's been across all major media, I've had four push notifications about it in 24 hours, it's on twitter and Facebook. Some people may not see it but sadly that's going to be because their news has become a bit of a "bubble", similar to around the elections/votes, and this news hasn't made it in. It is being covered regularly, and updated whenever there is news.

I can't imagine what her parents are going through, I really hope she is found and reunited soon Thanks

Magicpaintbrush · 07/08/2019 22:33

Bit confused by this thread as I've seen this reported pn the main BBC news pages online every single day since it happened - it's on there right now, I just looked. I hope they find this child alive and safe, her poor family.

kitk · 07/08/2019 22:40

@Magicpaintbrush not wishing to make you out yourself but not my experience? Dyu mind confirming if you're in London or SE? If I google can find aunt's appeal, but it's not obvious if I don't look for it
