Waterproof coast for secondary school???

DD has a warm winter coat that will do her another year & will be suitable for her first year at high school.

But now she will be walking to secondary school (Y7) - or cycling - she will need a raincoat/waterproof coat suitable for autumn/spring/layering over blazer etc.

Thing is I remember my Mum buying me a raincoat for secondary school and I never wore it - not once. So I don;t want to spend lots of £££ to have her never wear it.

I'm very out of touch as to what school girls will be wearing. Should I wait for a while until she settles into school? Is "cool" a factor?

What to your tweens wear for school bound waterproofing? I'm kind of confused here so advice welcome. TIA

No coats worn ever by my children. Just the blazer even in the snow. Hardly anyone wears a coat.

Do not buy a coat, unless she gets down on blended knee. She will now wear it.

Not

No don't bother.

They won't wear it. Even if it's snowing.

FiveLittlePigs · 05/08/2019 17:36

My dd never wore a coat ever while at secondary school. No one did.

Even when it was thick snow on the ground.

janeyre · 05/08/2019 17:38

Echoing PPs don’t bother

maddy68 · 05/08/2019 17:40

I'm a secondary teacher. I've never seen a pupil wear a coat yet rather ridiculous I know but they just don't!

Hotpinkangel19 · 05/08/2019 17:42

No don't buy it! They don't/won't wear one!

Tidypidy · 05/08/2019 17:44

My dd always wears a coat when it's cold or raining. She's just finished year 7. Most of the kids we see walking in wear them. She's got a lightweight waterproof and an old Animal snow jacket for when it's really cold. I was the same at school. I'd rather be warm and dry than "cool"!

iVampire · 05/08/2019 17:44

You will feel better if you get her a plain cagoule that squishes down to next to nothing. She’s unlikely to wear it, but it’ll be in her bag should she ever defy all normal teen behaviour and wear a weather-appropriate coat

Both my DDs wore coats at secondary school, maybe it’s because they didn’t have blazers.

dementedpixie · 05/08/2019 17:46

Mine don't wear a coat as they aren't allowed in the classroom and there aren't enough lockers for everyone to have one so mine don't have anywhere to store them

dementedpixie · 05/08/2019 17:47

They just wear their blazer

benfoldsfive · 05/08/2019 17:50

North Face all the way in this house. For all 3 teens, only wear in the rain, they do t care about the cold!

Redcrayons · 05/08/2019 17:58

Mine have raincoats that they can fold up and stuff into their bags. Both barely wear them, usually only if there’s torrential rain.

There’s no lockers at school and you have to carry it round with you all day so there’s nowhere to leave it.

There is another school on my way to work that don’t have school blazers and I see most of them with coats in winter.

Wait till she’s started and Suss it out.

Clutterbugsmum · 05/08/2019 18:03

Have a look at Amazon, I have got coats from Trespass and North face for £20.

DonPablo · 05/08/2019 18:06

Pac a mac here. He wears it that rarely but when he does need it, it's there, in his bag. And like pp, they have to carry cotas around with them all day, so that's the ball ache.

ThisIsMyBuick · 05/08/2019 18:16

All the dc at our high school wear coats in the winter. My dds both have teeny tiny umbrellas in their bags.

Bunnybigears · 05/08/2019 18:19

I would wait until she sees if wearing coats is the done thing at her school and which sort before you waste your money.

TheClitterati · 05/08/2019 18:21

ah you beauties!!

Just when I was feeling like a part of my brain was missing you remind me I'm OK !!!

I will wait for the child to beg me for a waterproof coat & then she can pick it and wear it :)

I do give dd an umbrella
