Going on holiday tomorrow, shit load of washing, tumble dryer isn’t drying and it’s pissing it down

What the hell is wrong with my stupid tumble dryer?

I’ve set it to the highest setting, filled it with the load of washing, it’s not overly full and the washing was well spun so it’s not soaking wet.

It told me the program would take 2.5 hours. That was four hours ago, it’s still going and the washing is still slightly damp. I’ve got another load to go on as yet. There’s no washing machine at the cottage so I need to take loads of stuff.

It just keeps raining so no chance of hanging it out.

It’s not going to be dry is it?

Put the heating on and laid the radiators

Ask a neighbour or family members

Aquamarine1029 · 05/08/2019 15:40

Have you checked the lint trap? Putting a clean dry towel in with the wet clothes helps them dry faster.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/08/2019 15:41

Good idea.

It’s done this before. Stupid bloody thing. Our old one was simple. Chuck it in for a couple of hours and it would actually come out, you know, dry. This pissing thing just limps on for hours and you still have damp clothes. It’s a Zanussi.

Ugh.

I’d take the first lot out and hang on the airer/coat-hangers etc and get the second lot in now.

tutu112 · 05/08/2019 15:49

Take the whole lot to a launderette?

moreismore · 05/08/2019 15:50

If there’s a laundrette nearby I’d go there

VeThings · 05/08/2019 15:52

Has it got a ‘tumble for x minutes’ setting rather than using a programme? I don’t bother with programmes, just stick the tumble dryer on for 60min. Sheets and towels sometimes need an extra 30min.

Joh66 · 05/08/2019 15:52

Is it a condensor, is the water cassette full. If vented is the vent pipe blocked or kinked? Any possibility your washing machine didn't spin properly. Can you split the load?

CottonSock · 05/08/2019 15:54

Have you checked filters?

Joh66 · 05/08/2019 15:54

My drier takes half an hour with a full load to extra dry setting.

sluj · 05/08/2019 15:55

My condenser does this when I need to wash the filter out. Bad timing though

ODFOx · 05/08/2019 15:55

Just hang everything on hangers from the door frames, on a maiden if you have one and airers. It's mild enough that it will dry by tomorrow.

shinynewapple · 05/08/2019 16:10

I had this happen once, I had to get repair man out. Can't remember what the problem was though.

Have you not got a launderette you can take it all to? Their dryers tend to be faster than domestic dryers as well.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/08/2019 16:13

Thanks guys. I’m gonna have to hang it all round the house. At least the dds are on board and are helping. It’s mostly their stuff.

It really is shit though. Over four hours to dry one load of washing? I have checked the filters, could be something wrong elsewhere I guess.

Was beautiful weather yesterday. Got a load load dry by lunchtime. Should have put another load on then.

Can’t believe I didn’t spot that there’s no washing machine at the cottage we’re going to. It was so gorgeous, in such a lovely location that I just booked it. Was only when I started reading the reviews that I saw that there was no washing machine. I mean, seriously. Why would you not supply one? It’s really rural too, miles from town, god knows where there might be a launderette.

My washing facilities are really winding me up this week. Grin

Does everyone use tumble dryers?! I just hang my washing out on clothes horses with the window a little open and it always dries overnight just fine

ShirleyPhallus · 05/08/2019 16:21

I don’t think I’ve ever been on holiday to somewhere with a washing machine nor ever needed one! Confused

CottonSock · 05/08/2019 16:28

You have checked the lint filter, but also (if a condenser) there are large other filters in the machine that get clogged. I was embarrassed by the state of mine when it wasn't drying stuff. My friend had same issue and wouldn't listen to what I was trying to tell her and called out repair man- who cleared the filters! Not saying it's you, but easy to miss.

MrsIronfoundersson · 05/08/2019 16:30

Split it into two half-loads and stick a clean dry towel in too. Is it a sensor dryer? I hate them, they never seem to dry as fully as my 'warm/hot and x minutes' cheapo dryer.

VeThings · 05/08/2019 16:35

Have you checked the other lint filter - not just the one you can easily pull out?

There should be another larger lint filter one in the machine, there’ll be a way of access it from outside (mine is accessed via a few catches at the bottom). My tumble dryer takes ages to dry when this filter is full.

VeThings · 05/08/2019 16:37

Cross post with CottonSock.

I tho k some people don’t realise there is another filter, like her friend (certainly on condenser dryers - I assumed they’d also be on venting dryers)

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 05/08/2019 16:38

Was just coming on to say there will be another filter. Mine is above the water trap. You have to turn plastic screws to get it out.

Herocomplex · 05/08/2019 16:38

Yep, the cassette filter, usually in the bottom, can get full of wet grey slime - yuck.

MumfriendsBlurgh · 05/08/2019 16:52

Are you in a cottage in the UK? Just get it as dry as you can by whatever means then when you're ready to go put a towel over the stuff in the boot/parcel shelf/back seat etc and lay it all on a pile there. When you get there continue drying it by hanging on hanger etc. No disaster, been there!

bobstersmum · 05/08/2019 16:57

2.5 hrs to dry a load?? My dryer can dry a huge load in about 40 mins! You haven't selected the cool setting have you? Mine has a button that toddler likes to press and this makes the dryer run on cool which takes longer.

SeaToSki · 05/08/2019 16:57

Make sure its set on extra dry, and is not on a wrinkle release setting as that just keeps tumbling until you stop it so that the clothes dont wrinkle. If its a condenser one then make sure the reservoir is empty and jiggle the reservoir container when you put it back in the slot as the valve might have got stuck. If none of that works, then put small loads in for an hour and then take them out and hang them around to finish off. If you have a fan, run it facing the clothes to get the air moving
