How much reading do you do books, media?

I was a bookworm as a child that has stayed with me on and off all my life. Doctors, hairdressers, hospital, you will find me with my nose buried in a book. Nothing on tv, reach for a book. Of course we are all reading online these days even OH who only reads on holiday is on his tablet in the evening reading.

Am I unusual or is the reading habit alive and well in the UK?

Sadly I read very little, except for when I go away on holiday.

I used to love reading - read avidly as a child and a teen, then just ran out of time as an adult.
I don't think that is a 'sign of the times' though.
My dh reads every night before he goes to sleep. I have 3 dc (17, 20, and 23) who all read a lot.
I just ran out of time.

CakeNinja · 04/08/2019 00:28

I read loads. Books and kindle.
Prefer the kindle for ease of being able to choose something late at and read instantly, can read in the dark anywhere, in a comfortable position in bed.

Love books still for the actual physical achievement! When they go on my shelf I love looking at them lined up knowing I’ve read it. Plus people come round and borrow them!

Don’t watch telly, don’t get into series’ or boxsets, films etc, just don’t turn it on. Dp does but i have a short attention span so reading is perfect fo me as I can just pick up and put down my book as i wish.

Asta19 · 04/08/2019 00:53

I have kobo as I can have it on my iPad/phone etc. Plus they often have decent books for 99p. I don’t know about kindle as I’ve never used it. I probably read on average 3 books a week as I’m a fast reader, i can’t stand audio books as they’re too slow for my brain! I do prefer physical paper books and do still treat myself on occasion but space is the big issue with that. If I ever win the lottery I will have a library for sure. I adore reading.

Your sample set is biased as this is a text-oriented site!

I tend to put in 2-6 hours of reading a day, some paper but mostly screens. Less of it is fiction than I'd like nowadays - ranges from places like here, through news sites, science and tech stuff, looking stuff up, learning things, cartoons, computer game stories, and writing my own docs.

SpoonBlender · 04/08/2019 01:09

@Asta19 Have you tried audiobooks using a player that can speed them up (preferably without going squeaky)? I can't do audio novels either tbf but I do listen to a lot of podcasts at about 120% speed when I'm driving, or 140% when I'm walking around. The information density is more appropriate then, stops my mind wandering off in the space between sentences.

movingontosomethingnew · 04/08/2019 01:29

I love reading. You'll always find me with a book.

SimplySteveRedux · 04/08/2019 04:58

Adore reading, and audiobooks, although it's mainly technical stuff related to my old career, Grisham, fantasy books, or Cathy Glass/Casey Watson/Rosie Lewis. I find a couple of hours every night and love it.

Ronsters · 04/08/2019 07:15

I love reading, I did as a child and still do. I read everyday.
I mainly read on my tablet through a Kindle app, I like the range of books available, it's usually cheaper and there are no storage issues.

I sometimes buy real books, mainly history titles.
Rarely buy fiction books as they are almost always cheaper on Kindle, and I don't have space to store them.

Downside of e books is you can't share. I've sometimes had people at work lend me books we've talked about, and I can't return the favour.

I read avidly, always have. As soon as I'm close to finishing one book, I have to have the next lined up. I read actual books though, I don't have a kindle or anything

MrsPinkCup · 04/08/2019 07:35

Everyday usually. I have the kindle app on my phone so can just use that when I'm sat in waiting rooms or on a break at work.

I also have an audible book always on the go for when I'm walking anywhere or working alone.

Benes · 04/08/2019 07:37

I read all the time. I'd choose reading over TV any day. I get through 2-3 books a week. I also have to read a lot for work....text books, journals etc.
You can't move in our house for books and I love it!!

MorningHair · 04/08/2019 07:41

All the time. Fiction, history, memoir, poetry, biography, mostly.

implantsandaDyson · 04/08/2019 07:46

I read physical books as opposed to electronic ones. I've tried but I like the feel of books. I'll read the news etc online but books and magazines I like to hold. I've always got a book tucked away in the car. I can spend a good bit of time sitting, waiting. I've just gone on holiday and have two books with me, I did have three but sneakied one before we left Blush. One of my kids is exactly the same - she likes to have an actual book in her hand and then she has quite a convoluted way of storing them in her room. I don't keep my books, just the odd one. When they're read, they're read and I pass them on. I'm not one for displaying books on shelves - I'd rather read them than clean them Grin

Weepingwillows12 · 04/08/2019 07:46

I read every day, usually in bed as it relaxes me to sleep. I love real books but have switched to kindle now as it's easier to get the books when I want them and don't have huge piles of books cluttering up my small bedroom.

JacquesHammer · 04/08/2019 07:47

I read whenever I can.

I pretty much average 450 books a year. I record them all.

It’s my favourite thing to do

vampirethriller · 04/08/2019 07:49

I read a book a week if I can. I love reading.

mathanxiety · 04/08/2019 08:24

I love reading and usually have two on the go at once. I mostly read non-fiction when it comes to actual books (history, biography, memoirs) and get novels on my kindle. I was very much a bookworm as a child.

Shosha1 · 04/08/2019 09:02

I use audible books, earphones in and can get on with chores or just sit and knit.

Usually go through 2 a month, always choosing ones over 10 hours.

Better return if they are over 20 hours. Some like the Outlander series where great as they are about 45 hours each

I also have kindle unlimited and read from these before bed ( can also get free audible ones from there)

Darkhistory · 04/08/2019 09:06

I am a voracious reader of real books. I shall study until the day I can read no more.

darkriver19886 · 04/08/2019 09:07

Loads. I read so much but mostly it's a coping mechanism

ScreamingValenta · 04/08/2019 09:08

I always have a book on the go. I'm a fast reader (a curse, not a blessing if you are a book-addict) so I can get through several in a week. I buy a lot from charity shops to feed my habit - I'll take them back once read if I don't think I'll want to re-read them. I do re-read quite often, though - I will have a read-through of favourite authors from time to time. I've also got a Kindle. I'm not a fan of audio books, though.

FourEyesGood · 04/08/2019 09:09

I read every night before going to sleep.

fussychica · 04/08/2019 09:47

I read a fair bit but I do go through phases.
I read a real newspaper 4 or 5 times most weeks, usually have a book on the go and read quite a bit online on my tablet. Watch TV most evenings, usually Netflix or Now TV rather than terrestrial tv.

barberousbarbara · 04/08/2019 10:53

I love reading. I find I have to read every night as it helps me relax enough to go to sleep. I love paper books but find my Kobo reader more convenient. I also spend a lot of time reading online (forums, news, etc).

As much as I've tried I can't get on with audio books. Ever since I've been old enough to read I've hate people reading out loud to me.
