My little one is due to be circumcised next week, does anyone have any good hints or tips for keeping him comfortable after?

Wait a minute...

You’re putting your son through an unecessary procedure so he and his father will have matching penises?

Are you mad?

Bylamplight · 02/08/2019 22:26

I didn’t realise this was such a polarising topic. Thanks for the helpful comments. I don’t think I would necessarily want to start a debate about morality on this topic. I think parents are (for the most part) best placed to make these decisions and I know we haven’t taken this decision lightly. I don’t really want to discuss the medical necessity or not, just because I don’t want to offend people who have different views on this.

Thanks again.

Unless it's for medical reasons (in which case you will get full follow up care instructions from the hospital) it should be illegal to mutilate a child! Some back room of a mosque or a guy with no medical qualifications comes to your house??? It's the 21st century how is it allowed. Babies have had to have their penises amputated following bodged circumcision - only a fully qualified surgeon should be allowed to even consult on such matters. Please reconsider - We don't allow girls to have fgm to look like their mums, so why condone it for boys

It always ends badly because most people are pretty horrified by this barbaric practice when it is done as anything other than a last resort out of medical necessity.

Troels · 02/08/2019 22:28

Lots of Vaseline each time you change a nappy and paracetamol or Ibuprofen for a few days. They heal very quickly.
Been there done that, both my boys were done. So no judgement from me.

Bylamplight · 02/08/2019 22:30

Thanks Troels

Yes, I understand that Billywig. I was surprised to see yet another thread about it.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 02/08/2019 22:32

You didn’t think cutting lumps of skin off babies for no reason would be polarising?

Are his ears very big? You could slice a bit of each while you’re getting his penis cut.

TitianaTitsling · 02/08/2019 22:34

You’re putting your son through an unecessary procedure so he and his father will have matching penises? Agree it most certainly is not the norm. But if it helps you feel better for mutilating your infant child.. still don't do it!

Wellmet · 02/08/2019 22:36

My advice: don't mutilate your son's genitals.

Bylamplight · 02/08/2019 22:37

Didn’t want to really get into it on the post because I’m not sure where I stand on non medical circumcision, it’s not something I’ve thought about too much to be honest.

I’m not circumcising him to match his dad, my husband was circumscribed as a teenager which he found quite mortifying at the time. Our son has the same predisposition to the same condition and we decided after lots and lots of discussion that we should circumcise him as a baby rather than wait until he hits puberty when it would probably be more of an ordeal.

Sorry if my post seemed inflammatory. That wasn’t my intention. I also think maybe people whose instinct is to react to this sort of thing in an extreme fashion should try and consider that generally people don’t set out to damage their children in any way.

I think calling it mutilation and telling horror stories about amputated penises might be a bit upsetting to people who have to go through this sort of thing, or even for those who choose to do this.

Not sure posting here was all that wise in the end Blush

Circumcision for non medical reasons is not offered on the NHS. Think about that and the possible reasons why that might be for a moment.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 02/08/2019 22:42

I think calling it mutilation and telling horror stories about amputated penises

You mean using facts? Confused

You’ve been entirely disingenuous OP. That’s a hell of a dripfeed after you got your reactions. (That you apparently didn’t expect Hmm)

Alicesweewonders · 02/08/2019 22:43

My nephew had it done & they did something wrong & he had problems going to the toilet for years. Just had another operation to fix it.

They did it for cultural reasonsHmm

Frith2013 · 02/08/2019 22:45

I wouldn’t be chopping bits off my children “in case they go wrong like their father”.

That’s bizarre.

cottonwoolsnowmen · 02/08/2019 22:45

You had the foresight to change your username but we're supposed to believe you didn't anticipate how inflammatory your posts would be?

hadthesnip2 · 02/08/2019 22:48

I believe a man enjoys sex, masterbation & oral sex a lot more if he has a foreskin. I pity your boy OP.

Celebelly · 02/08/2019 22:50

You had the foresight to change your username

Did anyone else read this as foreskin at first? Just me? Blush

Anyway, don't mutilate a child's genitals if you don't have to. It's a pretty straightforward philosophy.

BillywigSting · 02/08/2019 22:53

Well to be quite honest my initial advice even after that dripfeed (and bloody tenuous reason) remains the same.

Fucking don't do it.

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/08/2019 22:54

OP - medical circumcision is a last resort at any age, but especially in babies and toddlers. Are you sure you’re not jumping the gun hugely and inappropriately? DS1 got balanitis when he was six due to a non-retracting foreskin. Hydrocortisone cream and stretching his foreskin back every time he weed (which he mainly thought was hilarious as it makes the wee blast out) had it sorted in a fortnight, no unnecessary surgery required.

It sounds like you’re inventing a problem that doesn’t exist yet and jumping to completely the wrong solution.
