Why have people stopped indicating?!

I dont know if its just me that has noticed this but so many drivers just don't indicate. Its the most frustrating thing not knowing what the driver in front is going to do 😤

And breathe...

I have literally just had this conversation with my DH on our way home. It is ridiculous

motorcyclenumptiness · 02/08/2019 16:08

If motorists don't indicate, how am I supposed to know if I'm standing on the bit of pavement they want to park on?

TildaKauskumholm · 02/08/2019 16:16

Never mind not indicating, I'm astonished at how many don't even look at a roundabout, and pull out from my left, or sometimes a driver to my right stops as if they don't know what to do. Doesn't the highway code come as part of the test any more!

I was told that even if it’s your right of way, i.e. the road is clear on your side, if an oncoming car has already started their journey down the road, they can continue use.

We have an approach road to my road. Despite having garages and car barns, people park their cars outside their houses, which means that you have to drive on the wrong side of the road. They also park up to and including the junction with our road, making it a blind bend. I drive up and down there at less than ten mph because you just can’t predict when someone will appear.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/08/2019 16:25

One of my favourites was emerging from a small shopping area. Two lanes, so obviously in the right hand lane you turn right and in the left hand one you turn left.

But no! Woman in the right hand lane, adjacent to me in the left one, decides she’s turning left too. I had a sense she was going to do something stupid fortunately.

GreyGardens88 · 02/08/2019 16:29

In my driving test I was always told to indicate even if there wasn't a car behind. It drives me mad as a pedestrian too

crimsonlake · 02/08/2019 16:39

I always indicate if there is no traffic on the road, it is habit. I have noticed this a lot and it drives me nuts, indicate for fecks sake. Another thing that drives me crazy is cars pulling up so close behind me at traffic lights I cannot even see their bonnets.

cinnamonapplex · 02/08/2019 16:41

I'm a nervous wreck in cars and it's due to other drivers.
No indicators, cars pulling out on you, near misses on the motorway because so many drivers don't know what junction they come off at.
Idiots everywhere.

Madfrogs · 02/08/2019 16:42

New cars they are optional extras to purchase Grin I joke but even the police around here don’t indicate.

cinnamonapplex · 02/08/2019 16:42

Nervous wreck as a passenger, that is. I feel more in control when I'm driving!

Gogreen · 02/08/2019 16:44

I don’t indicate if I’m going straight over a round about, that’s correct though, as only the giveaway lane on the left is the only entry point I pass.

(That’s the correct way.....Isn’t it?)

Scorpiovenus · 02/08/2019 16:45

This is a old problem but I think its made worse as the more cars do for people the less they drive the car and more likely to forget?

ithinkiammelting · 02/08/2019 16:48

People don't bother because they know they can get away with breaking the law. There aren't enough coppers around to catch them in the act. I've followed people for half a mile who should have lost their licence in that short journey, their driving was that bad. Dangerously bad.

minipie · 02/08/2019 16:48

I’m astonished at how many don't even look at a roundabout, and pull out from my left, or sometimes a driver to my right stops as if they don't know what to do

The latter category stop because of the former category! I go very cautiously if turning right at roundabouts even though it’s my right of way because of the number of people who pull out in front of me from my left

blacksax · 02/08/2019 16:50

I always used to blame the Germans for not fitting indicators in Audis and BMWs but the plague is spreading far and wide now.

Crinkle77 · 02/08/2019 17:09

I don't drive and even I've noticed people don't seem to use their indicators anymore.

winterinmadeira · 02/08/2019 17:14

Omg this is my pet hate! I drive a lot and at least once a day shout ‘indication - would be good!’ At other drivers. And breathe....

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 02/08/2019 18:20

I wish I could give up driving. I have gone from a confidant driver to a wreak. And it is mostly because of idiots who can’t drive. Who swerve into my line and don’t indicate. I always indicate. No way am I being told it was my fault for not indicating.
I also don’t trust people on the road I want to go on if they are indicting to come off. I don’t trust them as half the time they have their indicator on for no reason. Drives my husband mad. But not w chance I’m pulling out till I can see they are pulling in.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 02/08/2019 18:37

How weird, I live abroad and thought it was just common here - didn't realise motorists don't do it in the UK!

The mantra here is 'If you think someone's going to do something stupid, they probably are'. Grin

MadisonAvenue · 02/08/2019 19:13

It's not just the lack of indicating where I live but the sheer number of people who think stopping at a red light is optional.

HopeClearwater · 02/08/2019 19:41

I think it’s worse in the Home Counties than anywhere else.

Also - i swear it’s easier to pass the driving test now.

LettuceBeFree · 02/08/2019 22:24

@ithinkiammelting I think you might be right but I really don't see the logic behind that. Like, sure they might not be in trouble for breaking the law by not using indicators, but what are they gaining? It literally takes less than a second to indicate and without it, they're massively increasing their chances of a collision (which would result in higher insurance the next year, etc. even if they somehow managed to claim it wasn't their fault)

StCharlotte · 02/08/2019 23:50

If motorists don't indicate, how am I supposed to know if I'm standing on the bit of pavement they want to park on? Grin

I could have done without the man indicating left into the road I was coming out , slowing down... and then not turning left...

PancakeAndKeith · 03/08/2019 00:01

Like Catlady I had heard that people are now taught to only bother indicating if there is someone to see it.
This is madness. Why not save yourself the trouble of looking to see if anyone needs you to indicate by just doing it anyway.
I will indicate at 3am on a country road without another human for a mile simply out of habit.

Oh and I agree with the people who have to swing their car out to turn off like they are driving a lorry.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 03/08/2019 00:05

OMG yes!

So noticeable, and so different to how it used to be on the roads, when people used to, you know, adhere to the Highway Code...

I drive a very old 4x4 and I swear I am ready to drive into the next idiot that pulls put in front of me without indicating. It will be at slow speed so no casualties but possibly some scrapes...
