Why have people stopped indicating?!

I dont know if its just me that has noticed this but so many drivers just don't indicate. Its the most frustrating thing not knowing what the driver in front is going to do 😤

And breathe...

people are now taught to only bother indicating if there is someone to see it.

I always indicate as (a) its habit; (b) it's literally at my fingertips and (c) there could be someone just about to step into my field of vision at the very last second.

It's so strange, because it's not like we have a finite quota of indicates so we have to be sparing with them.

SisyphusDad · 03/08/2019 09:34

I've read somewhere that the "only indicate if there's someone to see it" thing is taught as part of the Advanced Motoring qualification. I think the logic is that if you know there's no one around then you're aware of your surroundings but if you just indicate automatically you're not.

(Written by someone who has been known to indicate when navigating a right - angled bend in the road Blush)

I'm with aliceluther. It's a natural reaction to avoid an accident, if more of these idiots were bumped/knocked perhaps they'd indicate in future

I drove through an unfamiliar city yesterday and was in the wrong lane coming on to a roundabout, I indicated and saw a space to pull over but the woman in the next lane slammed her accelerator on to close the gap so I couldn’t get in!! Was weird, like it was a competition to get to the roundabout first!

woodhill · 03/08/2019 09:53

Another irk at roundabouts is the too important to wait brigade.

Lanes clearly marked i.e. R, L, SO etc

Why can't you wait to go right not just cut across other drivers from middle lane😡 dangerous

woodhill · 03/08/2019 10:10

I always indicate as I figure there are so many bad drivers on the road and regardless it's my duty to make my intentions crystal clear.

chocolatespiders · 03/08/2019 10:13

I dont know but I have noticed this too... I live in a place with many roundabouts!!! And I have also noticed those that are not willing to wait in the right lane and make dangerous moves, I dread my dd starting to drive next year. .

It feels really odd to me to change direction and not indicate!

LittleCandle · 03/08/2019 10:20

We have a theory that indicators are now an optional extras on some cars, but especially on BMWs. They cost thousands and thousands, so loads of people opt out.

It drives me mad, too, because there is nothing worse than sitting waiting to pull out and some twat is indicating and then doesn't turn! I think it is because a lot of people nowadays think that they are so important that us lesser plebs don't need to know what they are going to do. If an accident happens, no doubt they would blame the other person. I would hate to learn to drive now.

Signalling at roundabouts is the worst! People either don't bother or do it completely wrong.

I look at any indication plus road position to try and work out people's intentions but even that often doesn't work! I had to break sharply yesterday as someone was signalling to turn left at the roundabout, plus positioned as though they were about to turn left, even slowing a bit as though to start turning. As I started to pull out they accelerated past the left lane to go out of the second exit instead.

DH's bugbear about roundabouts is those mini roundabouts at T junctions- people bomb along the major road confident that people on the minor road have to give way to people coming from the right. Technically though, you only have to give way to people already on the roundabout, but I wouldn't risk pulling out when people are showing no signs at all of slowing down.

Like some other PP have said. When I took my Advanced Driving I was warned not to indicate unless necessary, such as when there was someone who would benefit from it. Or, if I was in a filter lane, I was not supposed to indicate as I could only turn left (or right) anyway.

Always thought it was a stupid rule, personally, and have always ignored it, except while doing the AM course.
