How much or how little do you spend on self care, beauty and grooming?

Obviously going to be different for everyone, but I’m just curious and trying to reset my own perspective. I struggle a bit to justify spending on myself at all.

In a typical month, what would you spend on creams, shampoos, treatments, hair styling, products, etc?

Used to be £500-1000 but I’ve cut right back a few months ago. Maybe £200 these days?

LifeOfBox · 02/08/2019 07:27

I have always had a good haircut which costs £60 every six weeks.

Other than that - two pedicures a year, legs waxed every four/five weeks, eyelashes curled/dyed three or four times a year.

Products, I use boots hot cloth cleanser and no7 moisturiser.

Excluding haircut I reckon £30-5 a month including products. More than I expected when added up tbh.

LifeOfBox · 02/08/2019 07:29

Clearly I am tight 😂. I didn’t spend much more when I earned a huuuge amount and was single.

Maybe £50? I buy good products but I use them sparingly, and I stagger buying them. Last month I bought a new mascara and a new tinted moisturiser so it would have been about £60-80.

It helps that I’ve finally found the perfect hair regime after years of buying ££ products, and it involves my £1.99 secret weapon!

FenellaMaxwell · 02/08/2019 07:31

I don’t know how £1000 a month is possible unless you are paying for your hair to be licked clean by unicorns or something?

KickingAStick · 02/08/2019 07:31

I buy eczema gel for my face once every 4 months - it costs £20. I also by shampoo for sensitive scalp once every 3 months (bulk buy on amazon - btw my hair is really shiny and in good condition since I started using it, bonus!)
I’m usually given a large tube of L’occitane hand cream (use at bedtime so one tube usually lasts about a year!)
I think that’s everything. Don’t really buy makeup (minimal use so one lasts for ages). I’m allergic to most lotions, creams etc so don’t bother with anything else.

Even pre-allergies I found beauty stuff a bit boring and slightly ridiculous. Just another tool to make women feel they aren’t good enough. I honestly thing toners and the like are just a massive con! How many men use toners and yet their skin is fine. I can’t help feeling the less crap you put on your skin the more likely it is to be good (excepting skin conditions etc).

That’s it.

InsertFunnyUsername · 02/08/2019 07:31

Around 50 a month i reckon.

And every 3 months a £90 hair colour and cut.

TequilaMockingbird0 · 02/08/2019 07:33

Probably £50-100 a month. Plus haircut every 3-4 months (£250).

LifeOfBox · 02/08/2019 07:33

😂🤣

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 02/08/2019 07:35

Not much anymore:

Haircut - £130 (twice a year)
Shampoo & Conditioner- £10 per month
Makeup basics - £20 every 3 months
Treatments - £20 for nails twice a year

Around £500 annually but I used to get nails done every month, eyebrows done, waxing etc so was actually more like £100 a month spending.

LajesticVantrashell · 02/08/2019 07:35

£20 on nails, £7 on eyebrows and maybe another £10 on mascara/blusher/eyeshadow.

Get my hair cut once a year and don't dye it.

Pineapplefish · 02/08/2019 07:36

I am quite frugal with this kind of thing. I get my hair cut twice a year and coloured four times a year for £50 a time. I use an epilator on my legs and underarms, but get my bikini line waxed a couple of times a year. I use Simple face wash, Olay moisturiser and whatever shampoo is on special offer. I rarely wear make up and never get my nails done. I go on a spa day with a friend once a year and have a treatment then.

Pickledbanana · 02/08/2019 07:37

I have hair cut and dyed approx every 8 weeks-£60
Other than that barely anything.
My make up lasts years and years. Perhaps buy one new item every 6 months at the most
Shampoo etc. I get from tk Maxx so maybe £5 a month
The last time I had my nails done was 7 years ago.
Have never had eyebrows, lashes or anything like that.
So I reckon on average a maximum of £50 per month

Chocolatedaim · 02/08/2019 07:37

Not much at all, but every now and then I wish I spent more. I don’t ever buy myself make up unless I’m in the airport (rare) or have perhaps a wedding coming up and know I need something. Even then I go to Savers as opposed to boots/Superdrug.
I have my hair cut maybe twice a year 🤦🏻‍♀️ I will dye it myself every 3-4months.
I don’t own any fake tan/face creams/foundations. I just use soap and water to clean my face, although I know that’s not ideal.

I never see it as an important expense to buy these things for myself, so before you know it it’s been 6mnths. I don’t wear make up often, unless it’s a special occasion and as a pregnant woman with a four year old, special occasions are few and far between!

lastqueenofscotland · 02/08/2019 07:37

God like literally fuck all.
Buy shampoo and nice soap and that.
Get my hair cut a few times a year at £40 a go.
Confused feel scruffy now

PixieLumos · 02/08/2019 07:41

I agree. I buy fairly low budget or mid-range products and they last me for ages. I have low maintenance baylayage - that lasts about 7 or 8 months before I have it redone. And a trim maybe twice a year. Make up is again budget or mid-range but will last for a long time as well, I don’t need to buy it that regularly (no idea how much this would be monthly if you add it up and average it out - probably less than 30 quid).

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 02/08/2019 07:42

@lastqueenofscotland. Me to!!!! A bottle of shampoo and some moisture cream.

FourEyesGood · 02/08/2019 07:42

I used to spend quite a lot but I’ve stopped buying expensive moisturiser and make-up (I now just use cheap moisturiser and only wear eyeliner, eyebrow pencil and mascara), so I reckon I probably spend £25 a month, which includes a hair cut every few months.

Skyejuly · 02/08/2019 07:42

About 50 a year...maybe less

TheVanguardSix · 02/08/2019 07:44

Me too. Probably £50 a year. And it shows. Grin
I'd like to spend more, but I can't.

Happyspud · 02/08/2019 07:46

Gosh I’d say zero most months. Haircut at £60 twice a year. Few bars of shampoo a year and cheap conditioner and shower gel every few months. I did spend about £80 replacing my makeup at the airport recently but that a once every 6 yrs thing.

Saves me a fortune!

Binforky · 02/08/2019 07:47

I spend £5 every 4 months on a haircut (lucky to have a hairdresser friend)

About £4 a week on shampoo and conditioner

£1 on showergel a week and £7 a month on moisturiser

That's it I dont wear makeup and that is for me and 3 kids. Sometimes I have to spend more on wash things as youngest likes to waste it which I'd annoying.

tinydancer88 · 02/08/2019 07:49

Probably in an average month about £80-90

Nails - £25
Hair - £15
Eyebrows - £5
Makeup - £20
Various lotions and potions - £20

Expected that to be more to be honest, although of course it depends when makeup items etc run out.

Frownette · 02/08/2019 07:51

£10 I think, if that. I have enough moisturiser, face wash, soap, shampoo for a few months if not the rest of the year. Bit low on perfume but should be o.k. for months.

Have some eyeliner, lipstick, cover-up stick. Don't do any treatments.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 02/08/2019 07:52

I have a full blown skincare addiction, so spend a fair amount on products over the course of a year. I don’t get my nails or eyebrows done or anything like that, but I do go for regular facials and I have my hair cut and highlighted every couple of months. It probably works out at about £250 ish a month, which is a lot more than some PPs, but I enjoy it.
