How much or how little do you spend on self care, beauty and grooming?

Obviously going to be different for everyone, but I’m just curious and trying to reset my own perspective. I struggle a bit to justify spending on myself at all.

In a typical month, what would you spend on creams, shampoos, treatments, hair styling, products, etc?

I buy toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, deodorant, razors) with the supermarket shop.

Make up wise I've only bought lipbalm this year, nothing else needed replacing.

I cut my own hair.

OldGrinch · 02/08/2019 20:07

Monthly amounts. About £70 for hair cut and colour, make up and toiletries about £40, that includes a monthly beauty box. Botox and fillers treatments about £1200 per year, so average monthly cost about £210. Worth every penny.

Branster · 03/08/2019 00:20

FenellaMaxwell would you please, please share your £1.99 secret hair weapon with us?

I spend a stupid amount of time on myself (religiously at least half hour morning and evening as everyday basic regimen and an average of extra hour/week for more time consuming jobs). I never tell people in RL of course. But I do wake up earlier in order to do so and it is my ‘me’ time. I can’t imagine not doing it. And I would be quite disappointed in myself if I didn’t look groomed or not stayed at (what I think it is ) the ideal weight and shape for me.
However, monthly spending would average at only around £30 - some months I don’t need to buy anything. Not sure if dental care goes here but that’s regular checkups and hygienist around £250/year I think and I view it as personal preventative care.

Only thing I get done by someone else is a hair trim every 8-10 months only because it would be impossible to do it myself. That’s about £15/visit to hairdresser. I cannot stand them fiddling with my hair and all the non-sensical small talk so I go in with damp hair, get the job done and am out the door as soon as possible.
Equally, I am very fussy about facials so don’t have those. Pre children I found a very nice beauty salon where the owner made her own treatments using some old French recipes and would only stock Guerlain, she was very particular and very strict with a no-nonsense approach which I loved. Her treatments were amazing, no idea what she was doing but it was like which-craft, getting out of there with fresh, clear and smooth skin. Sadly the placed closed down. I attempted some further facials at various other places but they were a complete waste of money and time and simply could not bear the whole approach of making it into some sort of event. I don’t want a drink, I don’t want to chat, I don’t want to listen to music, I just want the job done (and done well) without wasting time. So I never bother anymore.
Ditto spas would be my worst nightmare making me feel like wasting time.
I don’t go to the gym and can’t see the point of it myself.
I never have a manicure/pedicure done by other people (as above plus complete distrust of potentially unsterilised instruments). So I do these myself.
I am lucky I can dye my own hair and it comes out looking natural.
I’m not fussed about fake tanning so only use a gradual tan a few times a year.
No hair extensions, false nails.
Nothing done to my eyelashes, luckily I am happy with the way they are so far.
Pluck my own eyebrows, they don’t need a lot of attention luckily.
Minimum makeup which seems to last for ages so that’s quite a saving.
The only brand I truly like consistently is Clarins and DH is very considerate and gets me products from this brand when travelling or for my birthday.
Otherwise, I buy the cheapest shampoo where the packaging matches my bathroom and use the conditioner which comes with my hair dye. I make my own hair treatments every single week and do massage every evening. It seems to work maybe that’s why I get away with rare hair trims. I do however use a Dyson hairdryer (a one off expensive purchase) and it definitely keeps my hair in good condition. And in general I don’t abuse my hair.
I only use basic bars of soap (similar to Simple) because I don’t like shower gels or scented soaps.
I’ve always done my own waxing everywhere once a month including regular Brazilian for over two decades. I have had an IPL machine (another expensive one off purchase) for quite a few years so nowadays I only need to wax very few specific areas which is a quick job).
I make my own toners, Vit C serum and various face masks. I have quite a stash of clay powders, masks powders, oils and various other ingredients which are (mostly) inexpensive (Bleu&Marine powders are a bit dearer) and have accumulated over the years.
I use a very affordable retinoid acid.
I don’t use moisturiser on my face or specific eye cream.
I use a facial oil (I change them all the time if I find an interesting one but I don’t spend more than £15 and a small bottle lasts about 6 months).
I massage my face regularly so that’s free.
I make my own body scrub (oil and sugar) and use an oil to moisturise (about £10 from Bleu&Marine some of them smell amazing and a bottle lasts me about 4 months) or NipFab glycolic fix (downgraded from Ameliorate). There’s even a cheaper similar product from Palmer’s but can’t stand the fragrance.
I use Flexitol mixed with Lanolin balm (Amazon, tiny jar it last for ages around £8 I think) for feet and sometimes on knees and elbows for maintenance. I always have an expensive magic hand cream which does absolutely nothing but lasts a long time and use it every day.
I don’t use products in abundance, try to not over-apply but I use them regularly and they seem to last a long time.
I make my own cellulite oil (tried various products over the years, nothing really works on its own) and use it every single day, it’s the only way to make a difference. I am scared to wake up one day and find myself covered in the blasted thing so do what I can to keep it under control and prevent it nowadays.
I buy all my deodorants when abroad because they have nicer or more interesting fragrances in other countries. Maybe about £30/year. I only buy perfume every 3 years or so. DH, bless him, tries his best but I don’t like what he gives me, I suspect sales assistants just sell him whatever is some new fragrance at a high price and he is very proud to present me with something every now and then but they all end up at some bottle tombola Blush
So I don’t spend a lot of money but a lot of time doing stuff myself. However, going to get regular various treatments done and gym would probably take at least as long.

My DD on the other hand, costs me a pretty penny starting with gym membership and gym kit (apparently it can’t be just any odd gymwear), occasional false lashes, nails, fake tan. Regular hairdresser. Obscene amount of (expensive) makeup, makeup brushes, hair products etc etc.

@Branster l’oreal Kids pear detangling spray - gives you lovely frizz free, smooth hair!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 03/08/2019 07:22

I'm Shock at the person who said she could easily spend £2-3k a month, are you actually J -Lo ?Grin
I'd feel like a goddess at that amount of investment.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 03/08/2019 07:26

@Branster any chance of your cellulite oil recipe?

historysock · 03/08/2019 07:40

Ice really cut down because skint, but probably now about £50 a month in products including shampoo, moisturiser, hair stuff, then many a bi monthly bigger splurge on foundation/hair cut/a more luxury product... I get my sims done about twice a year, usually for my birthday which is near Christmas) and for holiday.
So probably about £75 a month average. Written down that seems a lot.

Unfortunately for me I now have two teen dd's who are mad on beauty products. They are constantly begging for nails done, false tan, make up, brows tinted, etc etc... and sneaking things in to the trolley in the supermarket... most of these things I say no to-but they probably end up costing me another £30 between them a month.

Blackandwhitehorse · 03/08/2019 07:56

Well I get my haircut every 7 weeks at £30 quid just as it’s a short style. Then just Aussie shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, floss, soap each month, I’m quite basic! But buy myself higher end make up, hair products, moisturisers occasionally but use sparingly. So maybe £30-£40 per month averaged out.

MrsJonesAndMe · 03/08/2019 07:59

I get my hair cut about 4 times a year @£50 a go.

Other than that, maybe £10-£20 a month on toiletries or make up on average.

I use shampoo and conditioner plus serum for hair.
Hot cloth cleanser from Superdrug for face.
Standard products like Revlon etc for make up.
Vaseline body cream.

Nothing fancy or expensive.

Southwest12 · 03/08/2019 12:27

I get my hair cut and a toner on every 4-5 weeks which is £38, I used to pay £75 just for a cut in London. Nails every month are £25. Eyebrows and lip get waxed maybe every 3 months for £8. Used to get lashes every month but switched to the lash lift which is £20, but lasts months. I get a keratin treatment on my hair every three months which is £100.

Don’t but makeup every month, but I use Mac powder and primark foundation (they still do a powder one), but do have a crazy amount of makeup and often randomly buy new things that I don’t really need.

Only use the touch of silver shampoo or the one that’s part of the keratin treatment (that’s £8 a bottle).

SheilaHammond · 03/08/2019 12:55

£25 haircut 4 times a year. No colour, it was too high maintenance. Nails for a special occasion or holiday...30 quid twice a year. Eyebrow dye and shape every 2 months which is £15. Moisturizer £5 a couple of times a year. Face powder and lippy is only makeup I wear usually...probably a tenner 3 times a year.

I go off what is a priority to me, and what I can get away with. So I get a haircut maybe once every 2-3 years, because I like it long and I look after it well so I don't get split ends. My hair is naturally beautiful so I'm very lucky in that respect. I only wash it once a week at most so shampoo lasts me forever. Probably all works at about £2 a month, at most.

My skin is another story. No natural blessings were bestowed upon me in that department, it is a constant battle with acne and dry skin. So I spend more here - lots of face masks and medicated face washes. Probably costs about £40 a month

I love having nicely painted nails so I will purchase new polishes every couple of months, but they are cheap so this rarely exceeds the £5 per month mark.

Everything else - make up is hardly ever worn so lasts me donkeys. I'm sure a lot of it is expired Blush I haven't bought any in over a year so I'm not sure how to put a number on it. I buy a big tub of moisturiser from the cheapo shop every few months for the rest of me. DH and I share it. Use very cheap natural deodorant that lasts me about a year. So works out at maybe £3 a month?

TwistyTop · 05/08/2019 06:59

Oh and I bought an epilator a couple of years ago that still works beautifully so I don't have any hair removal costs

Snowy111 · 05/08/2019 07:14

I know someone who used creme de la mer and didn’t appear to make one jot of difference. All a big con imho and my £2 pot of nivea does just the sameSmile

LeeScoresbysBalloon · 05/08/2019 10:13

I bought an epilator once, used it once and then never again. Bloody agony, it was a torture device!

username302020 · 05/08/2019 10:16

I don't have any hair products at home, I only get my hair blow dried at the salon (8x blowdries=£150 and a lot of time saved)

Manicure= £40/month
Pedicure=£40/month
Eyebrows=£20/month
Haircut=£30 once every 8-10 weeks

Omg, sorry. Not sure what happened

RingtheBells · 05/08/2019 10:28

Not a lot spent, haircut every couple of months £20 and just general everyday products so probably £10 a month. I do buy The M&S beauty calendar and summer box each year to try new things at a cheap price also

LBOCS2 · 05/08/2019 11:08

So, hair cut and colour 6x a year at £100 a time.

Waxing - about £50 every 6 weeks but only during the summer really.

Eyebrows threaded about every 4 weeks for between £3 and £9 - depending on if I go near home or near work! I tint them myself (when I bleach my 'tache 😁).

I spend very little on makeup - I like it, I have a lot, but I don't wear it very much so it doesn't run out. Maybe £50 a year on a couple of lipsticks or an eyeshadow palette?

I do my own nails and if I never bought another nail varnish again I still wouldn't run out.

Shampoo and conditioner last forever so I only replace them every couple of months.

Maybe £80 a month? Occasionally I get something new done for an event - a spray tan or LVL lashes, but by and large it's all just maintenance.

TheViceOfReason · 05/08/2019 15:40

About £3 a month!

Alberto Balsam shampoo and dove deodorant are used daily - that's it.

In winter i might use simple daily moisturiser a few times a week - a bottle lasts me well over a year.

I don't get my haircut professionally, i don't dye it, i don't get nails done, i don't wear make up. I use perfume maybe a dozen times a year.

EnormousDormouse · 05/08/2019 15:47

Well.... I am both cheap and expensive....

£12 on a haircut, twice a year.
£6 box hair colour every 6 weeks or so.
Haven't bought shampoo/bath stuff in memory as I use up gift packs and stay at hotels regularly so use their mini bottles.
Had the same makeup for years.

....but then I have Botox at £250 twice a year.
